I was on the team that converted this engine back to coal Shovelling is the point of what we do removing that directly contracts our goal The maintenance was harder than other the other engines, very tedious and difficult in comparison, it was also extremely expensive to run Most of the advantages it had on paper ended up making it worse in practice

Fair enough, when was it converted back to coal? What parts of maintenance were harder in comparison? This has got me very curious

@EverydayADV a few months ago now, the main culprit is the lack of standardisation, we can't apply the same fixes to issues that you would other engines, zero spare parts exist for it. Often if something went wrong with an oil burning component we would spend days, if not weeks, diagnosing and just going through the trial and error process to figure out what was wrong where as on a coal burner we have 100 years worth of reference material to help diagnose and fix an issue. Short version is its more expensive to look after and run and costs more time and resources to fix when theres problems

I wouldn’t say it’s lost it’s heritage, the oil burning conversion simply replaces coal with oil, there’s still a fire, that boils water, that makes steam. That powers the locomotive, it’s still in many ways a steam engine. And generally they actually don’t run it on Total fire ban days usually, as it can have risks from the fire. It also is supposedly quite Tricky to fire, even without shovelling, trying to get the gauges and pressure just right on the oil. Or so I’ve heard from some Firemen buddies.

He's right I fire it regularly. It is tricky to fire and it's true that it's not a diesel. It will burn any light oil we just happen to use diesel. Nothing on the railway runs on total fire ban these days usually.
