Oh my god why Meggy, it wasn't enough they made her a sanitized awful abomination of a human model to allow her to be marketable along the rest of SMG4 but she also marked the start of SMG4 into safe, formulaic and friendly humor as if it was engineered to be an insult to the classic chaotic videos. I miss the old SMG4, I'm not alone in this because in SMG4 infinite wisdom they decided to *REMASTER* the actually good videos, crawling back to the superior era. It doesn't matter the channel is bigger, they ditched the core audience and chased the safe, most popular one for monetary gain. All of that was started by Meggy.

If this race ever were to happen again, I wanna see Hornby Thomas, Emily and Diesel vs Bachmann Thomas, Emily and Diesel. If not, then I'd love to see a fan-made-Thomas-episode on Trainz, to be 100% reference of James's Model Railway Race. Thomas vs either Rosie, or Stanley in a tank engine race, with two empty coaches (Annie and Clarabel for Thomas) each to pull, Mavis vs Diesel in a diesel shunter race, with four empty fuel tankers and a brakevan each to pull, along with Mavis looking after her diesel fuel tank, but Diesel gambling on full speed, stopping to refuel his tank at the halfway point and risk burning out his engine motor and finally, Gordon vs Henry in a express race, with five empty express coaches each to pull, but as they leave their respective stations, Gordon burst his safety valve and Henry started feeling unwell already, so the back up engines will be Emily, cause Rebecca's busy on real express duties, vs James, since he already finished delivering his goods train, but I still don't know if it'll work in sync, or not, Cause for Thomas, Mavis and Emily, they'll start at Knapford, but for either Rosie, or Stanley, Diesel and James will start either at Vicarstown, or London (Victoria-Station).

Honestly, one of the biggest issues with the way James May did it is that he tried to use 16.5mm gauge equipment. It worked eventually, but HO/OO/On30/O16.5 scale equipment is not meant to be operated outdoors like that. The gears are very fine, the gearboxes are open, and in general smaller equipment isn't built to go those kinds of distances without extensive maintenance. Another issue is the use of track power - this caused a LOT of headaches. If I were to do this, I'd use 45mm gauge equipment (G/IIm/Fn3/SM45 scale) with onboard power (battery or live steam) and RC control, and I'd use a brand new, never run locomotive so that it's fresh and ready to go and I know it won't break down. Large-scale equipment like this is built to run for extended periods of time on outdoor display layouts while hauling heavy trains, sometimes even with real loads - I've seen people transport ballast, track sections and other garden railroading supplies, fish food for lineside koi ponds, gardening supplies and tools, and even food and beverages using trains of this size. I get that it was sort of a self-imposed challenge to do it with classic Hornby OO equipment since the show James May did it for was about classic UK toy brands and doing extreme things with them, but if I was _just_ going for the record without any other context, I'd rather minimize the risks and do it the "right" way.

Interesting! I had almost forgotten about James May's adventures with Lego, Scalextric, Airfix, Meccano and model railways - was it really 15 years ago? 10 miles of OO gauge track is a scale 760 miles - that is further than Penzance to Inverness and on the UK's full-size railways, would take a similarly long time to travel.
@adalbertbuchaniec11992 ай бұрын
An additional note: In HO scale(used in both mainland Europe and the United States), the trains would have traveled a scale 870 miles. Both scales use the same track width. The Flying Scotsman is now available in HO scale thanks to Marklin/Trix for AC and DC running respectfully. Having an LNER A1 next to a Big Boy in scale has the whole Flying Scotsman is as long as the Big Boy without a tender. The insanity of how much the US pushed the loading gauge.
@jamesgilbart26722 ай бұрын
@@adalbertbuchaniec1199 Thanks for the note. Yes, American trains are huge compared with those in the UK. The UK is out of step with the US and the rest of Europe in having it's most most popular model rail scale as 1/76 rather than 1/87 which means larger scale trains but they still use HO track - meaning that OO scale is effectively narrow gauge.
