Here is one idea: Have a parent ask you to grab a bottle of water that is sitting next to the pulpit, or the baptismal font. Ask the kids why you grabbed it… “Because you are asked…” We do God’s Work, with our hands, because God asks us to love our neighbors and the world.

I was literally sitting with my group in a corner restaurant in the French Quarter when I said, "O my gosh, that's the Dollar Store Children's Message guy," and my whole group looked like I was an alien (more than usual). Was gonna say hi, but the group required attention. Hope you had a good gathering!

This was such a successful children's sermon! My sermon was largely about supporting our hungry neighbors, and this was such a perfect tie-in for the kids, plus a boost for the food bank our congregation is involved with. Really thoughtful, and super simple to make happen. Thanks!!

Gardener springboard (we're reading the John text): I'm going to put on my gardening hat, gloves, and bring my sprayer. I'll ask the kids if they knew it was me and then talk about how they recognized me because they expected me to be in this spot. But Mary wasn't expecting Jesus...(and obviously he didn't look exactly like himself) but when he spoke to her, her joy was uncontainable. Jesus is all around us, but we don't expect him to look or sound like the people in front of us, or to be in our ordinary spaces. Thank you!!

I appreciate you offering an alternative to the "rope" prop. I have some children with impulsive behavioral issues around whom using rope would not be wise nor safe. But reminding them that Jesus is with them is always Good News!
