The example of explosive behavior is so helpful. My horse started presenting with explosive behavior last year, and it turns out he had EPM. So we treated him and he is doing wonderfully now. Fortunately he only had One explosive event on the ground and two in the saddle before I figured out that something was wrong and had him checked.

Wonderful information. So many of these horses are out there. A lot of times bought then sold without ever being diagnosed. Thank you again for the studied information. It’s priceless❤

You can send a hair sample to test for PSSM 2? I was told by my vet only a muscle biopsy was the way to test for PSSM2 and hair was PSSM 1.

By getting symptoms under control through correct management protocol. In horses who respond to management muscle twitching alleviates

With the twitching- if they are twitching on the shoulder and flank pretty consistently (horse not tested but I’m going to test because I think he may have it) would that be considered a fail as well?
@PSSMAwareness

Hi It depends what context the twitching is, is it when you are conducting the pat test?

If for instance the horse's muscles got tight after the 5 mins of exercise, would you cease exercise immediately and return to stall, or walk it out, do stretches, or ? TIA
@PSSMAwareness
@PSSMAwareness Жыл бұрын
If the horses muscles get tight after 5 minutes cease exercise as the horse is exercise intolerant Continuing to exercise a horse with tight muscles could cause serious muscle damage.

If he does this under saddle, then cease exercise camping out a symptom when the horse isnt managed. But ensure your horse is definitely camping out and not just peeing

So sorry for the loss of Karlos…I too own a pssm horse who is now 14. It’s been a heartbreaking journey. I am proud of you and my heart goes out for you. Thank you thank you for your video and plea! I was told by the registry about 7 years ago that it was “ok” to breed her, which I would never do. I knew something was wrong from purchasing her as a yearling but it would take years to get a proper diagnosis. I’m sharing your video because it is of such importance to get the word out about this terrible abnormality. You are brave and kind. Thank you!!! On behalf of all horses with this disorder and their loving, tireless, owners!

Another possibility to relieve muscle tightness: trigger point massage, keeping warm: put on a warm horse planket for the night and/or bad weather, physiotherapy (Masterson Method, you can do this yourself once learned). I do this alternating with 20 minutes of suppling exercises in hand which I end before another tightening could begin.

@PSSMAwareness

No there are 3 available options to test for PSSM2 this is muscle bisopy, the hair strand test, and a blood or semen sample that gets sent to the same lab as the hair strand test

Came home after a frustrating attempt to ride my pssm1/hypp horse who is my recent acquisition and whom i just moved to a different barn so he could have more room to move on his own in a large stall-attached turnout (dry turn-out as i am in Cali). So frustrated at his reluctance to move. Appreciate your openness.

The horses in video have very clear symptoms- the most difficult cases have very subtle symptoms. And what’s worse is the symptoms may not show up when vet shows up- on and off lameness, just not using their back end correctly. It took me forever to figure out what was happening and vet was no help.

I'm so pleased that you said about loads of reasons for putting a horse to sleep. Sadly, we lost our mare and strongly believe she has had recurrent episodes and one was just to bad after she showed very severe neurological problems.

Wow, I think my horse must have had PSSM. It would explain why he was so obliging and easy going until he cantered. At canter he could be quite explosive.
