This line has been called "anti-Semitic," but this never occurred me, and I still cannot see it. The satire is so over the top and so intertwined with a criticism of Nazi ideal of blonde, blue eyed "purity" the idea that this gorilla who we see as comic or grotesque can be seen differently, and the idea that seeing a gorilla as something that looks Jewish is so absurd, it seems the perfect slap in the fascist face.

I guess that’s why you gotta be careful when making jokes like these. Because regardless of whether or not the song is making fun of the people who think that way, at the end of the day, the people who laugh the loudest at the “punchline” at the end ARE the people who think that way.
@endoravin6 күн бұрын
@@hwtvi3466 Yes, you are likely correct. But isn't that point of satire and humor? It has a barb and if we are too careful, we lose the ability to really punch hard. Listen to Randy Newman's song, "Rednecks," and tell me you'd rather he did not sing this song at all, for fear of offending and allowing the bigots to laugh loudest. And the song needs the word "Nigger" to be effective in skewering those who use it. This "If You Could See Her" is a very wicked and zingy number and you are seeing Joel Gray's character gradually become more potent throughout the movie, and I think he becomes more lethal to the Nazis as he transmogrifies. Your point, however, cannot be denied.
@hwtvi34665 күн бұрын
@@endoravin I see your point, but when writing a parody like this, and not just in music, there should be a certain level of finesse and je-ne-sais-quoi that makes it clear enough that the writer isn’t actually endorsing harmful views. “Rednecks,” for example, does so by making unflattering remarks about the racist rednecks that the song is the POV of, like saying that they “don’t know their asses from holes in the ground.” There’s a video that I watched I while back that talks about good and bad ways of parodying the objectification of women in media. It said that there can be a thin line between making fun of objectifying women and contributing to the objectification, even if unintentionally. I believe something similar in this case, that there can be a thin line between telling jokes that make fun of racists and… just telling a racist joke. When the latter happens, it can be problem, because actual racists can use that work to spread the harmful beliefs that it was initially making fun of. A big example has to be “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” a book that was anti-slavery, but was adapted by many Southerners as extremely racist minstrel shows. A similar problem happens with “If You Could See Her,” (at least in-universe, since the writers of Cabaret were not anti-Semitic) where the song is already getting the audience to laugh at this man in love with a gorilla, as the lyrics kinda make fun of him trying to justify his love for her, like saying that she doesn’t smoke or drink gin, (because _duh,_ she’s a gorilla, can’t do either) or saying that the “problem with her isn’t small.” When the final line hits, it can kinda come off as if the joke is message is supposed to be, “HA HA, JEWISH WOMEN ARE UGLY AND LOOK LIKE GORILLAS! THEY’RE NOT PEOPLE!”

Not really, the idea is it’s supposed to be funny until the last line to make the audience feel disgusted for laughing, since it’s now under the context of dehumanizing a whole race.
