I visited Medellin and Cartagena and loved it there Colombia is just amazing and I see how much of a difference it makes if I know Spanish. I would say my Spanish is moderate I'm still not fluent yet but want to be fluent. I get stuck with certain words but people are able to understand me for the most part. I'm still working on being fluent.

Good info. Just a bit bizzare that you would say you wish you knew that you need to speak at least a intermediate level of spanish to live in colombia , thats pretty much common sense unless you live in a gated community of expats, and if thats the case , you would be missing out on life and just existing . Anyways . Buena suerte . Otherwise everything you said is pretty acurate .

Medellin is 60 to 85 Fahrenheit all 12 months; modest amount rain is plenty to keep everything green. I like swimming in some of the 10 pools at the Estadio Olympic complex which is a 6 minutes walk from my $12 USD per night Airbnb.

Hi Dylan. What's your take in Pereira? It seems it's a good alternative to Cuenca, for us older folks better climate, less air pollution and fires than Medellin, which is noisy and crowded.....and isn't Bogotà just like Medellin? Especially if you want to escape places like NYC, but if you come from a mild Canadian climate (besides the winter)?

I’m a little confused as to the aggregate amount. Let’s say I put $9k this month and spend that all next month and put another$9k in a few months later is that considered going over the limit since it adds up to $18k, but never having over 10k in the account at any one time? Thanks for any clarification you can give me.

Thank you for the comment, First, I advise you to speak to an international tax professional. Based on your example, you do not need to file an FBAR. Please keep in mind, if you have any other foreign financial accounts, you would combine the value of these for FBAR reporting purposes. One thing I advise clients, is to err on the side of caution and file the FBAR if you are unsure if you met the filing requirement. There is no punishment for over reporting, but the consequences of not reporting are very severe. -Dylan

Hi, Dylan. Here's an interesting question: What about a situation of a dual citizen Canadian American who is taxed by the US everywhere, and has his major financial interests and connections in Canada (as a Canadian tax resident), and lives over 183 days in retirement in Colombia?? How does one avoid TRIPLE taxation?? One assumes there is no tax liability as a retired person in Colombia unless one earns money from renting/Airbnb. But if one has business activity in Colombia AND is liable for taxation in the US AND Canada, is that called triple taxation relying on tax treaties??

Thank you for the comment. Yes, you can use your US bank while residing in Colombia. It’s possible to use any visa or master card debit card at a Colombian ATM and withdraw Colombian pesos. The exchange rate will vary between 3-5% less than the spot rate, but yes it is possible. -Dylan

As a Colombian who travels there every two years I can testify that it’s very true about legal documents and paperwork. Colombians are very analytical and serious about any legality stuff with everyone not just foreigners. It gets to the point where it feels like a hassle and impossible with the help of a local who can guide you in the process.

Your channel came up in my search for “Canadian” expats 🤔 Anyway, I wish in all your statements about “Wishing” before moving to Colombia, you’d mention more important stuff that could seriously impact anyone, from anywhere in the world who is moving to Colombia, such as: You can’t open a bank account if you are….Some landlords may charge you in US dollar instead of pesos and if you’re not American, it could drill a huge hole in your pocket…Etc, etc. Places pop up in my 24 hour radar, and most of the information I receive from expats travelling to different countries are insignificant general information that any Google search can answer, but important details that aren’t general and may skip someone’s mind to ask or research are never talked about. I know this because after watching videos, searching for answers and so on, we decided to travel from one side of the world to another, thinking that YAY, our insignificant Canadian dollar is going to go far, but only to realize that rent is paid in US dollar, which no one bloody ever mentioned anywhere! I made sure to look up properties in this country, the cost of rent or purchase, in Google, and even FB marketplace and the currency was never in USD until we arrived and boom, the hard reality kicked in. We also realized that foreigners can’t purchase any property, even with the smallest backyard, as it’s considered “Agricultural”. But does any “Expat” ever mentions any of this anywhere? NOPE.
