I got around the extortionate price of buying a new one by becoming friendly with my local V2000 video rental company who would sell off recent model refurbs for less than 2/3rds new retail price (with new video heads if necessary and a full recalibration). They were a family run business who always offered you a tea or coffee when you went in and relied on word of mouth to keep them going, so they never sold you short. I really miss companies like that. I was lucky enough to own a nice 21" Philips CRT TV and was always amazed by the small difference in picture quality between a live broadcast and a recording made on a 1983 Philips V2324. All the VHS machines on sale at the time looked and sounded laughably bad by comparison. V2000 supported the use of chrome video tape from day one, so I'd always buy those as the performance was noticeably superior to standard ferric video tapes.

Beautiful radio. The DX 160 was my first communications receiver. Loved the radio and the appearance. Only problem was how it drifted as it warmed up. Thanks for bringing back some great memories.

Hi I'm in North Wales too, in Flintshire and just got a v3, I'm learning slowly. I'm trying to make an antenna for Airband, have you got any suggestions please? Great video.

look on youtube for a slim jim antenna build. Google slim jim calculator enter the desired frequency and build your own. It's a good learning curve for you as well. Hope this helps

The Realistic DX-160 radio has a dissimilar metal problem on the tuning printed circuit board with the rivets that connect the top side printed circuit to the printed circuit on the bottom side of the PC board. Resoldering is not sufficient, the fix is to solder jumper wires on the top side of the board to replace the connection made by the printed circuit on the bottom side. Shining a bright light through the bottom of the board shows clearly where to solder the jumper wires on the top side. This is the RF amp and Local Oscillator circuit so it will require alignment. Operation without repair may be intermittent.

Why are you talking about shortwave and tuning in ham transmissions? Also I think you need a lesson on sideband tuning.

I have this as well and there is some differences between the v3 and v4 as you stated. I dont have the time to show it in a video but you might be a good candidate to do just that. Even the setup is a bit different so you could put together some good content.

What antenna are you using? Is there not a lot of interference because it's a broadband antenna. What is your location?
@erlendse Жыл бұрын
Maybe a bit much gain there. Also if you want weak signals selecting a low bandwidth does help a lot! Kinda interesting that you are able drive it into overload it using that antenna! Have fun, a tiny portable reciver is totally worth to have!

Thanks (a bit later lol) loved to spot you on a map, I see you basically are not much far from Liverpool (on your north-east) - greetings from Italy. Sorry for ignorance, I assumed wire antenna was more helpful with long and medium waves.. or is it closer to its effective length (say 5 m wire is closer to the 10 m - 30 MHz rather than the lower side of the spectrum? What about the best moment of the day to try listening to radio? Thanks and greetings from Italy

Hi I am torn between the pl990x and pl880... if I'm not bothered about the Bluetooth, sd card for audio and the speaker( as I believe the audio on both are not that dissimilar) would you tell me to go for the pl880? I do like the look of the 880 but can afford the pl990x. Any advice would be appreciated thanks

New firmware is available for this radio which is supposed to fix a lot of issues. The 101 is no longer in production, a new Gen II is in development, it would be nice if it was larder with a big speaker and more buttons and knobs.

Absolutely horrendous machines to repair and service and notoriously unreliable too. Typical PHILIPS design, lots of plastic. Good idea that you can turn the tape over and good Dynamic tracking but other than that, picture quality not up to much and very, very unreliable machines.

i don't know, we had one for 20 years and we only got rid of it because we couldn't get any new tapes

lot of plastic in the second generation. but the first series as this one were litteraly built like tank... the chassis and deck chassis are in zamak, the under "hood" is in steel, only the upper case is made of plastic. and very few nylon parts in the deck itself, everything is direct drive with somewhat heavy motors, no belts and rubber. seriously, from this era, the V2000 was the most robust and heaviest design. ask yourself why thoses deck weight around 18Kg :) they have their failures now, but they are 40 years old machine.

Dear Mr. Christopher Cullin I just ordered mine DeepSDR 101. I read that the mw reception is bad. Can you, please, suggest a mw antenna for it. I already have a malachite v1.10C with extra antenna board and the mw reception is pretty good with a youloop antenna or miniwhip.
