I would recommend for new people to consider the Came-TV P06 model. I've added weights beyond it's rating and has held up for a long time. Has some benefits of light weight, tripod base for setting down and folds weights for compact transport. I try to use tapered weights as the ones near center to push most of the weight further out. I can balance a c70 on it with extra weights. I wish they made a bigger version of it. The steadicam/glidecam ones are more annoying to add and remove weights and also can tip over when set down. (I do also own glidecam hd-2000&4000 and vest setup with big came-tv stabilizer but still like and use the P06 for a lot of shooting. For me the perfect steadicam for free hand use would be a mix of the P06 weights design and the Devin Graham signature glidecam in a size between the two and retaining the movable gymbal positioning. The P06 is good because the handle is so near the camera it allows the whole thing to balance with less overall weight plus it is very light as well. This helps you keep the overall weight manageable for no vest use. Just try to get the weights away from the center to maximize polar moment of inertia.
