I legitimately do not know how you can say the sound track sucks. That's like how "John Carpenter's The Thing" won a Razzie for the Soundtrack. Sure there are very few tracks, but everyone captures the tone and the spirit of the game perfectly.
@Pawkt
@Pawkt 21 сағат бұрын
I say these things because they are how I feel; whether I liked or disliked the game, these are my points being made to provide insight. The soundtrack being small is not the point, t's the same songs on repeat for hours in the locations you are in, buzzing in the back of your skull and vibrating your ears without change, until the day night cycle or you enter a new biome. Turning off these songs and adding in a playlist elevated the experience, the music just doesn't fit 90% of the time. It's like stating "Stray is the best game ever GOTY forever" when the major feature, the cat, is removed, leaving only a game with minimal content. Remove the songs here, the gameplay is much more tolerable, though still lacking in gameplay.

@@Pawkt But that is the result of the Soundtrack being small. And I am a huge proponent of separating what you feel, from the definitive statements about something. Something is not necessarily bad because I don't like it. It can be bad, but it is not made bad by me not liking it, and I think this is a pretty clear instance that you didn't care for it, but it isn't actually bad. Especially when almost every other review points out the music as being one of the highlights of the game. It's fine for you to not like it, but saying that it's bad is an far overstrong statement. I would have loved more tracks my self, but that's just because it would have been more amazing music to listen to. I would also point out that there are no quests where you are required to have a certain stat, and that clothing in the game is designed to buff your out of combat stats, so there should in fact be very few interactions you can't pass without level ups, at which point, that's kind of the point of an RPG, to have different builds do different things for you. And I'd honestly argue that you made the right call upping your agility. It's funny to me that you basically picked the optimum build, but then were like "Man if only I didn't play the game the right way." Oh also stupid shitty Fun Fact. The areas loading in and out while you are next to them, is something that was patched into the game. The world used to be completely seamless, but when they put the final quest in, I don't know why, they broke it, so now the zone loading is weirdly close together. Also... I don't know what your Main Menu Music is. That's not even REMOTELY the track that plays when I boot up the game. So unless you never actually played your actual main menu music, and forgot to label the first track I don't know what's up. I also don't agree that the track that was clearly labeled was superiors in any way. That did not capture the spirit of the game at all.

@@PerspectiveEnd I don't have a specific taste in music; I listen to and appreciate pretty much anything, but I do expect the soundtracks to change every so often if they are in game or be subtle. So being lost in one location is what causes the soundtrack to be so annoying, especially if it does cut out, only to repeat the same song later on. Side quests that push you away from explorable areas, where you can find whatever is hidden behind them I treat that as a "My next quest is to get xx stat", while you look for the main quests. It comes down to being extremely distracted. Really didn't feel all that great with guile, was always thinking I should have put more into Lore to access more things, instead of leaving when there were no lockpicking locations. Main menu song would be lost to me, probably the mistake of muting the menu music and then forgetting to label the file while recording it with music overlayed. Which would be a mistake on my part so i'll trim that section, the normal main menu isn't terrible, but after 8 straight hours of the same songs, it's too much to appreciate. Opinions are subjective to everyone in different ways. I loved the story of the game, was really getting into it, but the music (repeating) and lack of progression in a combat sense and just the walking really lowered the bar too much for me to pass.
@PerspectiveEnd
@PerspectiveEnd 19 сағат бұрын
@@Pawkt Where do you see the game needing to switch the soundtrack where it doesn't? All the zones have their own tracks, and some of the more minor areas do, battle music almost wouldn't be appropriate, because all the combat lasts seconds, so switching tracks for 2 seconds and then back wouldn't work. But again, almost all side quests can be completed just by wearing the right cloths when you run into the problem that your current stats don't allow you to complete, and most of them do support two different ways of completion. Sure it's not immersive sim levels, but if you have any kind of build that isn't 100% centralized to one stat almost every quest should be completable. And even then if you bring the right clothing it should still be so for most of the quests, even if your build is over hyper focused. The thing about Guile, is that it makes you both faster, and if you max it out, you no longer suffer stamina loss from running, which means that you can sprint into most enemies, and OKH them before they even know you are comming. It also lets you jump a lot of the traps and obstacles very easily. For sure the combat is the weakest part of the game. They needed to give the enemies better reflexes with, more damage, and less windup on their attacks. With maxed out Guile it is so easy to obliterate every enemy before they even know you are there, but that is like the one objective flaw with the game.
@Pawkt
@Pawkt 19 сағат бұрын
@@PerspectiveEnd It's more walking around for a few hours, in the same zone, to suddenly being silent, peaceful, empty. Then to be sidelined by the start up of the same some, I do tend to like to over-explore a lot, be in places I shouldn't be right now, walk around aimlessly, find secrets, but it was just very annoying from what I recall. Clothing is something I never seemed to find much of, not a lot of good a thinkers cap does for someone with no points into lore, or that +10 to lockpicking with the rogues hood, when it's already high enough. I really just 100% went full guile and didn't care about any other skill until I felt like I had to care :P Definitely did a lot of running around and running in circles around enemies, on hard difficulty, breezing through the combats. It's just the story is what I wanted, but I could never really get more out of it, since the rest of the game itself was just such a slog. Music is nice and all, when it isn't the 100th time you've heard the same tune is all. It's just too atmospheric for me to have gotten into, unless it was the skiff song any other tolerable song, I wouldn't have minded it, maybe. Chalk it up to frustration.

As soon as I heard "you get weaker the longer the run" I had to pause don't need to listen to any more. If you're going to copy the game, why would you do the opposite of the thing that makes it so special... Becoming God was the ultimate chase and is why I play every run, for that very purpose. So to do the opposite and make enemies tankier is a complete headscratcher.

There are definitely moments where you "can" become overpowered, but that's only if you get lucky with a very early x10 of a really good item drop, like everything you pick up is just attack speed or crit. Which isn't the case, during the Demo it had a pretty decent mixture of balance where you did feel a bit stronger, but after they launched the game it got changed to be as you said a headscratcher.

I think this videos can show some things the developers can do to improve the game, but honestly the most important thing in roguelikes is balancing and power scaling and they already have all the rest, so i think they are going well
@Pawkt

Since the game scales with you, you'll never really feel like you're ever in control or powerful like you do with Risk of Rain 2, they actually did change the game balancing to be worse. When I mentioned there was something different from the demo vs Early Access, it took me a while to realize it, but it was the fact that I was just... never getting stronger because they made everything unbalanced.

Talk faster! Got it! I've questioned a few folks about this; it depends on how invested I am in a game when I have a lot to say in a short period of time. I am also Canadian, and we have a somewhat greater speech per minute average than America, which could be it, or you are as you said simply too old. It's not a surprise that many people seem to have issues with my speech in the comments; I'd imagine that the average person who grew up with Age of Empires and Stronghold are currently in their late 30s, 50s, or even 60s. So kind of makes sense when being more slow and coherent with clear pronunciation is better. I'll keep that in mind for any future classic titles. Hope you enjoy the game!

Yeah, usually a gold version is not supposed to be a sequel. Won't say things that have already been said by other comments but I still feel like a lot of parts of this video were a bit exaggerated. The ambiance is immaculate and the levels are nowhere near "big enough" to really be a slog even when you need to backtrack here and there, especially with how cool the locations are. Plus saying "if you played psychopomp you've played gold" is just not really true since there's about twice the content at least, probably more than that actually.

Hey dev here and love hearing different takes on this story. Sorry the ending didn’t resonate you! I’ve heard takes on both ends of the spectrum which as a creator excites me as it was sorta my goal when approaching this game from an artistic perspective vs clean cut ending. I love hearing an ending can be interpreted differently and don’t think that it should be a negative to be challenging to the imagination. I think the answers to certain reveals are all there after consideration tho and my goal was always to tell this particular story which was about the human experience in Galaxyland. Regardless, thank you for playing! <3
@Pawkt
@Pawkt 20 күн бұрын
Thanks for making it. The ending was okay, but to me would have been wonderful for if there had been a little more after it; it definitely ended too quickly. The whole leaving it up to the viewer to figure out for themselves if everyone dies or lives happily ever after is difficult to stomach when it's presented as a story that we're playing through and experiencing. A game like Fallout does the same thing, but at the very least it gives the players experience through their choices and ends with them thinking about where their player character has gone off too next, now that it's over where Galaxy Land ends with a "Until Next Time" kind of vibe, rather than a conclusive ending.

It's clearly a unique game that most people are unaware of be it itself or the mental landscape it depicts. It is a little tough for the typical player to understand for obvious reasons due to the cryptic nature of the story. I'll always be honest with my opinions, even if I do make some mistakes like using a "Tiny" bit of content, when that isn't the case. Poor choice of words on my part haha.

I’d argue the original feels more like a demo now that Gold released. Personally the inclusion of 3 new areas, tonnes of new extra locations and plentiful sequels warrants Gold’s existence. Plus psychopomp itself is a game designed to push the player to uncover secrets and grasp its seemingly incoherent world. Is it perfect? No, the price for what’s there can be argued as a little steep, and the lack of replaying levels after completion without starting a new save can be tiresome, especially with how arduous backtracking is in the game. But with that said, it’s a decent experience worth the money that gives a couple hours of enjoyment ontop of a chaotic story that leaves you with varying interpretations to others, I feel like this review focuses too much on simply stating “only 2 (weird, there’s 3 new levels) main levels?” Without accounting for all the other content and supposed additional stuff in the works.
@Pawkt
@Pawkt 24 күн бұрын
Obviously, the original would feel less polished now that this version has more polish and a little more substance for those that enjoy sleuthing. Though I wouldn't say the price is that high; perhaps that would be a country difference for some? I understand that a $8 game can be worth a lot in other countries if it isn't adjusted. But it is reasonable. A regular run takes about two hours, with plenty more time for the secrets. I completely agree with the backtracking. If you forget the keys or specific things, you have to start over and try again, which isn't that bad. It takes about 30 minutes to speed through the majority of the base game, with the exception of discovering the secrets in each area. Personally, I'm only talking about the five egg spots (2 added), not all of the extra & optional content; I'd rather people play it for themselves and experience it rather than presenting everything to spoil it all.
@bong6959
@bong6959 24 күн бұрын
@@Pawkt there’s technically 3 eggs (buildings, DNA and symbols) My main gripe with this video is moreso how it states gold has a “tiny” amount of new features and how if you’ve played the original, you’ve played gold. While you can argue the first half of the game plays relatively exact to the original and the ending is the same, there’s still alot of content to offer in regards to the gold version: - Phone numbers to seek out - Home (relative to the emerald keys) - Emerald keys for each level - New secret areas ontop of the old ones - 3 new areas to explore - tonnes of new extra locations - More refined epilogue I won’t lie, I expected more out of gold, more secrets and perhaps less of a walking simulator in some areas, but what the game offers right now isn’t a “tiny” bit extra in comparison to gold, I fear that could put some people off playing gold.
@Pawkt
@Pawkt 24 күн бұрын
@@bong6959 Yeah, I should have chosen a better term. Sorry about that, not my intention but I guess my point was that the average player will just play the base game. (1 hour) for Psychopomp and for GOLD (2-3 hours) which is mostly comprised of walking simulator as evidenced by the majority of reviews and average playtimes. So most of these secrets will remain hidden since they are either too difficult to obtain or, more crucially, there are no guides available currently to assist those who wish to experience it. They aren't exactly that fun to discover as when I did, I was still hung up on having to backtrack so much, write things down.
@bong6959
@bong6959 24 күн бұрын
@@Pawkt the only section that felt awkward to backtrack was symbols, the rest of the games levels felt fine (buildings and DNA weren’t too bad). There’s definitely merit in how the new maps are bigger and grander which leads to more tiresome walking, but I’m hopeful the dev takes that onboard. It’d be cool if they added more to do on these maps. In fact that’s kinda the main point of criticism I have with the game, the lack of things to do in the levels. Some areas just don’t have enough enemies, I was swimming in red syringes often bumbling about into the progression areas. It would’ve been cool to see more interactive features or enemies, but hopefully once the modding guides and stuff are released, players can have a mess about and develop maps that can push psychopomp to become a more interactive game.

@@bong6959 Yes, I agree. I didn't enjoy the moth location now that you noted the lack of things to do. It actually started to put me to sleep, which is a good indicator to me that it's just not that fun, at least that level. I believe what I'm trying to say is that I wanted the sequel and kept comparing how there wasn't much new content outside of the same old Psychopomp with some extra new features (not little), but it still wasn't very exciting. It's kind of like how I was with a game called "Goodbye Volcano High" a severe lack of content, that was brought to life due to the modding community and a mockery-fanmade version. (SnootGame) and then (IWaniHugThatGator)

?? Did we play the same game?? Like. The first half got a huge graphics update (n secrets added) n there was 3 new levels, not 2?? There was the building place, the DNA place, n then the place w/ the big glowy things (im tired so im losing words alot here lol) Also you totally glossed over the keys, the "home" part that goes with it, and the secret ending that goes with THAT, all the transient locations that got added, Like I get it if you dont wanna stop n smell the secrets but acting like it's the game's fault you dont wanna look deeper is kinda silly.

You're definitely missing the point here. I just don't want to spoil the gameplay for those of you that actually want to experience the game. Glossing over it for that sake. It's reminiscent of OneShot and their current remaster. Same game, a little extra material, when many of us were expecting a sequel, that is still a long ways off. I've played the base game three times, mostly running around. I have played Gold twice. I've unlocked most of the doors, but not all of them, investigated the secret false walls, attempted to decipher the secret message in the hospital, and dialed the phone. I only count the egg locations as new places (2 new eggs) because that is what the majority of people will be playing through, and they will most likely not be interested in discovering the deeper secrets. PS: Sleep is good.

@@Pawkt kinda presumptuous that players wont care about the new secrets n stuff??? This vid paints psychopomp gold like it's not worth looking at. That theres no additions to the early areas, really bad later levels, ect. Like. This could easily seriously turn people off from a good game because you make it sound like it's pointless. Its kinda downright mean n rubs me the wrong way. You say you're not trying to "spoil it" but by doing that you're just saying theres nothing to find Period. Idk. You're entitled to your opinion n whatever.

@@sketchynonsense9290 See, that is the point of me just being open about my opinions. I don't sugar coat anything. I'm not obsessed with Psychopomp like you and most of the community. I just like Psychopomp, just like I like most games. Just because I was expecting a sequel does not mean I think the game is bad, I was hoping for more than just a few snippets of extra secrets and cutscenes that felt rushed scattered around and I just didn't have fun playing through it for the 4th and 5th time. Nothing more. If you wish to support the developer, purchase this version of the game. I've done precisely that, and I have no plans to refunding it. This means anyone new to the game, can check out the original first and then figure out if they want to support them as well, here is hoping it doesn't take the dev that long to finish the second game. When people purchase a new game from a highly anticipated series or niche, they should understand what they are getting themselves into. If I spoil it, they can't watch it, leaves them less likely to want to understand it, where in my written review I go into a bit more detail since I don't have to physically show anything.

@@Pawkt You were expecting a sequel from a solo dev in less than a year from the initial release? You're not very intelligent, huh?

@@chiselbit2 I play hundreds and close to a thousand games a year. Keeping track of niche titles isn't easy, until they suddenly pop back up. It's a game you play once, forget it exists then come back for more.

We all did. Good to support abstract indie developers, but kind of disappointed with how they released it under their trailer which made it look you know, different and new. Ah well.

This video aged so poorly. You clearly have no knowledge of how game development work. Whatever was is the PBE is what your getting. If making animations was that easy we would be getting yasuo ASU by now. Our opinion was irrelevant its just there for bug testing. Also size doesnt mean anything is only sexual if nerdy incels lime you only think about sex 24/7. Size doesnt mean everything is also a joke about height.
