I studied at home in the kitchen with two doors open to the living room where my parents and four younger siblings were watching TV most nights. I was able to concentrate with the refrigerator across the room from where I sat at the kitchen table and all the noise from the TV. I did not snack, most college coeds are always on a diet. It all comes down to whether someone has learned how to concentrate or not. I also worked twenty to thirty hours per week and commuted on the bus three hours per day. And if I tried to read on the bus, I would get probably throw up after a few minutes. I knew that I could not waste time if I wanted to do well in geology. I graduated with honors.

Nice video 😊 Thank you. Still I need help. I found out that I am not always fully focused on reading itself. Usually I am reading unconsiousnessly like watching KZbin shorts - fast, furious, without comprehension, usually in weird places like in bus. So any ritual tips to increase comprehension would be amazing.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:20 *📚 Estimating Effective Study Time* - The typical college freshman's effective study time varies widely, with estimates ranging from 5 minutes to several hours. - A study conducted at the University of Michigan found that most students reach a point of diminishing returns in their studying after about 25 to 30 minutes. - This phenomenon applies not only to reading but also to lectures, indicating the importance of efficient study techniques. 03:04 *🕰️ Inefficient Study Strategies* - Merely increasing study hours without employing effective strategies may not lead to improved academic performance. - The anecdote of Janette demonstrates how excessive studying without breaks can result in academic failure. - Graphical representation illustrates the diminishing returns of prolonged study sessions without breaks. 06:37 *🔄 The Importance of Breaks* - Taking regular breaks during study sessions can significantly enhance efficiency and retention. - Short breaks, approximately 5 minutes long, can recharge cognitive resources and maintain high levels of concentration. - Integrating breaks into study schedules can lead to longer periods of effective study time and mitigate feelings of overwhelm or burnout. 20:32 *📚 Understanding Concepts vs. Facts* - Distinguishing between concepts and facts in learning. - Importance of comprehending the function and meaning behind information. - Examples of studying anatomy to illustrate the difference between memorizing facts and understanding concepts. 23:43 *🧠 Grasping Concepts in Learning* - Emphasizing the importance of understanding concepts for long-term retention. - The struggle of making concepts meaningful and how it contributes to effective studying. - Providing an example and criteria for determining if a concept is truly understood. 26:46 *🧠 Enhancing Memory Retention* - Experiment demonstrating the limitations of short-term memory. - Importance of deeper processing for better retention. - Comparing performance in memory tasks between superficial and deeper processing. 29:21 *🤔 Superficial vs. Deep Processing in Learning* - Contrasting superficial thinking with deeper processing for improved comprehension. - Demonstrating the impact of different cognitive approaches on memory retention. - Encouraging students to engage in deeper processing for better learning outcomes. 32:58 *📖 Effective Study Strategies* - Advocating for the utilization of study groups for enhanced learning. - Critiquing ineffective study habits such as excessive highlighting. - Highlighting the importance of active learning and adequate sleep for efficient studying. 40:36 *📚 Effective Learning Techniques* - Teachers encourage students to seek clarification and engage actively in learning. - Active learning methods like recitation and teaching others enhance understanding and retention of information. - Engaging in dialogue, teaching an empty chair, or explaining concepts to others can reinforce learning. 43:16 *📖 Effective Textbook Utilization* - Many students overlook the importance of textbooks and lack effective strategies for using them. - SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review) method enhances comprehension and retention of textbook material. - Surveying chapters, raising questions, and actively seeking answers improve learning outcomes. 47:46 *🧠 Memorization Techniques* - Mnemonics, such as acronyms, coined sayings, and interacting images, aid in memorizing facts. - Mnemonics facilitate recall and help remember complex information, such as anatomical terms or scientific concepts. - Interacting images, like associating numbers or words with vivid mental images, enhance memory retention. i) Take a 5 min break if you feel you are losing your efficiency. Something like 30-study, 5- break may work ii) You will not actually retain stuff if you can't put it in your own words. Very imp iii) This guy says to take notes during lecture iv) There is difference bw recognition and recollection. v) Teaching others will help you analyse if you really understood the concept vi) Use the sq3r technique. Survey- Have a brief glance over the pages of the chapter. Questionnaire- Ask questions to the book. Like what's a prototype? Read, Recite, Review- Brushing up to check if you have not forgotten or confused anything. vii) Active recall- At the end of session writing or speaking what all you understood in your own words.
