Sumi Shimamoto, who played Clarice, also played the heroine in the later Lupin III TV series directed by Hayao Miyazaki, and later played Nausicaa.😊 Also, Shimamoto Sumi, who is now a veteran voice actress, said that she only found out that she had passed the audition for the role of Clarice when she came home from a part-time job.😅

Berserk Nausicaa is one of the best things ever. In the Manga you see more of her warrior side. This is kind of pre-Ghibli but it fits perfectly into their style.

One of my all time favorite movies. It is so not my style, and I did not like Country Roads. But this stole my heart and now I can't hear Country Roads without tearing up. Such a perfect movie. And it really reminds me of how it felt to live in Japan. I see this as part of a 4 movie Ghibli set. All based in the same part of Japan and following life in that area as Japan changes. The first is Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro). That is what the area was like before development, the traditional life. Pom Poko covers the development phase of West Tokyo, opposed by magical animals that lived there. Then comes Whisper of the Heart, what the place is like after development. And then, as you know, The Cat Returns which runs with the story written in this movie. All are amazing movies. All are very different. And all done by different Ghibli directors.

Our company did the English subtitling for The Castle of Cagliostro. This may actually be it. I remember it was a breeze since there's so little dialogue in it. Our company's name may be in the credits. I heard we were not the only ones providing subtitles for this film so there could be more than one version floating around.

So glad a Miyazaki fan reacted to Lupin! It's such a fun movie, and different to Miyazaki's other films in that Joe Hisaishi hadn't come onto the scene to collaborate with the soundtracks. ps. In Japanese we pronounce Lupin: loo-pun rather than loo-pin :)

So glad to see a reaction on my favourite miyazaki film, and subbed too! The dubbed versions can be a bit hit and miss. NB. Studio Ghibli is pronounced with a soft g - jib-lee. It's not the same pronunciation as the arabic word.

The movie is inspired by The Little Mermaid, both the original fairy tale by Hand Christian Andersen and the Disney movie. There're a lot similiarities and parallells to it, such as Ponyo is a red haired sea creature who falls in love with a human and her dad is against the very idea at the start, as he hates humans for overfishing and polluting the sea. She becomes a human through magic and spend time at Sosuke's place, where she learns about the human world and how it works, she reverts back to her original form but becomes human permentily so she can stay with Sosuke. Fujimoto, like Triton to see that not all humans are bad and realize he has to let go of her daughter as he can't have control over her life and choices. Also, from the original tale, there is the threat that if Sosuke wouldn't pass the test, Ponyo would turn into sea foam, which sadly happens to the mermaid (although she's reborn a sky spirit). Sosouke have parallells with Prince Eric as they both have black hair and lives next to the sea. Ponyo being silent in the first part of the movie could be a reference to Ariel losing her voice to Ursula. Aside from The Little Mermaid, there're two reference to Richard Wagner's The Ring of Nibelungen, first Ponyo's birthname is Brynhilde, which is also the name of one of Valkyries, who falls in love for Sigurd, a mortal. The other is the music that is played when Ponyo looks and chases after Sosuke in Lisa's car, is similiar to Wagner's The Ride of the Valkyries.

Looks like I'm late to the party, but better late than never (and let's hope it's not too late since too late is the same thing as never). 😋 Something I didn't notice until after I'd watched this film at least a dozen times is that there was a blatant hint as to Nausicaä being "The Chosen One" right at the start. The last image during the opening credits and the first glimpse we get of Nausicaä a few seconds later should have tipped everyone off, but it was subtle enough to miss if you didn't know it was a clue. With the Giant Warrior, it was called into service before it had finished growing. It was essentially a very premature baby, albeit a baby designed for destruction. It was programmed to obey since it's nothing more than a biological robot, so it attempted to obey to the best of its ability, until it couldn't obey any longer and died. One of the most clever uses of "the rule of three" is that silly-sounding "la, la-la-la-la, la-la" theme. The first time we hear it is when the Ohmu is obviously "talking with" Nausicaä' and in hindsight, examining her memories. The second time we hear it, we see the key memory which the Ohmu obviously must have seen. The third time we hear it, the Ohmu collective repay kind for kind and life for life. That knowledge changes that silly-sounding theme from "silly" to "spine-tingling". While the manga is a far more involved story with a lot more detail, this movie is a great story in its own right.

Porco Rosso is my favorite Ghibli movie. It makes me tear up every time with the explanation of how he became a pig. Lots of old Miyazaki movies like Grave of the Fireflies have some deep anti-war sentiment. I feel like this one is never mentioned when it comes to Ghibli movies and it always makes me happy to see people appreciating it.

I don't know if you've seen "Nasuicca: Of the Valley of the Wind" yet, but a friend of mine brought up a theory that the floating city of Laputa might have been what caused the "Seven Days of Fire" as referenced (and kinda seen) in Nasuicca, due to a war between two fractured parties of the Laputa royal family. Once the war had concluded, with the more honorable side winning, they were horrified by the aftermath of their war and decided to abandon the floating city out of guilt and disgust, believing that no one should have that kind of power.

This was a Studio Ghibili film, but it was directed by Yoshifumi Kondo. Miyazaki was involved but Kondo was in charge. Kondo was suppose to be a guiding animator for Ghibili going forward. His life was cut short by illness and this was his most well known film. BTW, Shizuka's room was bigger because her older sister had moved out.

One of the main reasons why a lot of characters look similar to other characters in his movies is Hayao Miyazaki based them on family members or people he works with. In My Neighbour Totoro, the dad looks a lot like Muska. EDIT: I always thought it odd that the "Spell of Destruction" is just one word. You'd think it would be as long as the spell earlier to point out the location to the castle. And the only reason the top part of the island didn't get destroyed is that it was the civilian area and castle gardens. The destruction was only to destroy the weaponry from falling into the wrong hands.

There's a theory that all of Studio Ghibli's films take place in the same universe, with Castle In The Sky taking place most likely at the very end of the timeline, right next to Nasuicca. A friend of mine believes that the floating city of Laputa caused the "Seven Days of Fire" in the lore of Nasuicca due to a war between the two fractured parties of the Laputa family.

Japanese word “Tsuki” is meaning as “moon”. Nishimiya wanted to say “Suki” as “I love you”, but she said “Chuki” without correct pronunciation, so Ishida could not listen correctly and he could not understand all her words from start to end of this movie. Thanks.

I know this is has been a year but I'm still gonna comment on some of your interrogations ! So first, about the "Balus" spell (destruction), I'm fairly certain only members of the royal family can use it (AND they need the stone, not just anyone can do it). Then, the point of the incantation itself was probably to destroy the castle in case it has been taken over, and therefore to avoid its power ending up in the wrong hands (however one might wonder why they didn't destroy the castle when they left it centuries ago, maybe they thought no one would be able to access it anyway (or use it, since only the royal family can). As for why it's only one word, well it's supposed to be an emergency spell, so if it takes 10 seconds to cast it's kind of pointless. Then, about why they abandonned the castle, I think the only explanation the movie gives is Shiita explaining that at the end the people here weren't happy because they were away from the earth, and basically away from the base state of what humans are supposed to be and do. Like they've detached themselves so much to simplistic things that their existence is pointless (something like that, not certain if I explained that properly). The water flooding certain part of the castle is just rain that has accumulated over centuries. You pointing out about the craters everywhere in the landscape is actually incredible well thought and I never made the connection, your theory is very plausible. Finally, the castle was supposed to be destroyed *entirely* by the spell, but since it's been centuries a lot of plants have grown into the castle (including the giant tree), the root systems kept quite a lot of it in place (as well as the giant flying stone), which is why it didn't entirely break.

Hi, yeah everything has always been legit however you don't usually get a figure every box. Usually every 2 or 3 boxes but even the boxes without figures are pretty good. As for the food item there's always 1 item and allergies are listed in the pamphlet if I remember correctly.
