Still have my issued ones in the loft from a winter Bosnia tour in '96/97. Different Goretex outers. Plain olive/ grey colour IIRC, that don't come as far up the arm. There was also a white wool wristlet.

Ok, still have my original issue one and i consider essential kit both as rainwear and as a shelter. In fact I’ve just ordered another mint one for around 30 quid but shock horror these are going for absolutely silly £ now. So guessing these will become very tricky to source. Bulletproof but yes a little heavy but remember how good it is on a wet evening especially if you fix 2 together. This video didn’t show it worn in poncho mode over top of a bergan… but it can. Get one whilst you can.
@Surplus-Only8 күн бұрын
Granted little heavy, but lighter than a rain jacket and Basha combined. Ideal weight and size for the minimalist however. My channel is only to show case kit, with no personal opinion given. Viewers can make their own mind up given all the stats.

Thanks for your work, Bex ! I remember in the 90s in France a few surplus stores were selling a DPM "kit/bum roll" from the British Army, made by SASS, to carry the basha and poncho over the PLCE pouches. It was very similar to the pattern 58 bum roll, but made of cordura and camo. Was it ever issued ? This piece of gear is so rare, I'm thinking about making one by myself.
@Surplus-Only8 күн бұрын
I have a non issue basha bum roll in MTP demonstrated on the (Main channel) Mine fits great on my Jay Jays webbing order.

The pcs LIGHTWEIGHT thermal smock is not a softie replacement, but a different garment completely. Hence their new nickname is 'buffalo' not softie. The softie replacement is titled, "pcs thermal jacket" which is more akin to the softie as it's an insulated jacket with smooth lining, not a fleece lined smock with no thermal insulation. Lots of people complain that the fleece lining makes it difficult to get on and off, but I'd argue it's user error as it's designed, as you said, to be worn alone or just with a fitted base layer
@Surplus-Only8 күн бұрын
The army did not issued the softies for dessert war ware, issued garments were these PCS. "Buffalo" is a company that makes (Aquatherm Fleece Lined Smocks) Buffalo was never issued to the army. I have reviewed the Buffalo Special 6 Shirt as a matter of fact.

So the green softie is just another version of the pcs thermal smock? I thought it would have a polyester wadding rather than inner fleece lining.

Spent many nights under these poncho’s back in the early eighties, 3 years as a cadet and another 3 as a TAVR infantry soldier, very robust brilliant bit of kit . It was part of the 58 webbing set and was carried in poncho carrier we use to call a ( Bum Roll) which was worn below the kidney pouches at the rear of the soldier, hence the name. Airborne troops had a tendency to wear their bum roll above the same pouches, which was a preference of mine, as it made the webbing more snug to the body when running with.

Cheers, I was about to buy the Softie version but I just want them for winter wild camping and probably sleeping in inside my bag if it gets that bit colder.
@robmartin4927Ай бұрын
Had mine a long time bought it brand new. Use to use it a lot to wear in wet weather but then the pu coating started to peel off after only few years making it useless in wet weather so only occasionally use it now as a ground sheet.

The five presstuds at the bottom of the Poncho are for attaching to the presstuds at the bottom of the 58 pattern sleeping bag. Making a bivvy system 😊.

Yep used it that way in the Dutch army in 89/90 ....only the Dutch Marines had these poncho's. We in infantry had the WW2 model raincape so i bought one in a army navy store

certainly the first time ive seen that being worn that way. most of the time, its thrown under the top flap of a bergan, or strapped on with the waist and leg strap. usually never gets used for anything other than the GSR

Hi Bex, hope you are well. I have one of these. I find it great to hang from the chest strap D rings of your ruck sack with a pair of carabiners, as a chest pack/ rig. Helps to balance you out, too, and easy to detach when needed. All the best.👍🏾😉🇬🇧

@Surplus-Only6 ай бұрын
The main channel is still there airing videos every Friday, but is due end very soon, & replaced by 2 other sister channels, with (Surplus Only) being one of them. bexbugoutsurvivor is filmed a year in advance, and I haven't filmed anything for many months now, and when the remaining episodes are aired the channel will close. My back is ok but on very strong meds with heavy side effects. The second part of the social experiment will restart bexbugoutsurvivor in October 2025 with 36 episodes, and the more familiar (bexbugoutsurvivor) content moved to membership or Patreon. OTHER CHANNELS I OWN. bex-treks (Lightweight camping) bexbugoutsurvivor (Original ideas) none mainstream thinking. Surplus Only (Military kit) displayed without personal opinion. An announcement will come soon to all subscribers.

Hi Bex. Hope you are well. These boots were really common, in the early ‘80’s. I bought a couple of pairs for beach fishing down Chesil in Dorset. Great boots for shingle, as nothing would get caught in the treads. I probably only paid a fiver for them back then as, like you say, they were not the comfiest of boots, but fine if you just wanted something to throw on. Hope you are well, all the best.👍🏾🇬🇧
