The Michael Radford movie is more psychologically and artistically accurate, but this movie I think does the best job at adapting the book to the screen in a way that is accessible for those who havent read the book

One can see why Horowitz and Rubinstein could never have been friends. Two superb musicians at opposite ends of the music spectrum--Rubinstein so refined and polished and Horowitz the wild Russian madman. I wonder how many of these stolen off the airwaves bootlegs are still floating around out there that will never see daylight. No matter. We have at least three live now of H (not counting the in-studio one with Toscanini) and that should be a pretty good testament to H's virtuosity. I"m still waiting for a live performance someone recorded off the radio of Rachmaninoff playing the Liszt E-flat. I think he played it in about 14 minutes. I've never heard a faster performance. The powerful b-flat scale from top to bottom at the end was so fast that it sounded like Rachmaninoff ripped the piano in two.

I had forgotten how masterful Chaliapin was as both a singer and an actor. I need to go back and listen to this wonderful opera entire. Thank you for posting this.

I mentioned to Ward Marston that in my humble opinion his release of the Complete Recordings of Feodor Chaliapin was my favorite of all his hundreds of releases of many thousands of tracks. It contains 13 CDs and a magnificent booklet with many pictures of his various roles. I'm still listening to his Chaliapin release, I'm on CD 7. Simply superb singing AND acting. The best.

This is a superb performance. Gunnar Johansen always puts the music first and he takes his time unfurling this great poetic masterpiece. He never sensationalized Liszt, although he had such a comprehensive technique that he was able to record the most taxing works without the listener sensing that he was under any strain. Sadly, both the piano and the sound quality on his many, many recordings is pretty rudimentary, but I am more and more impressed each time I hear his playing. He was much more than a virtuoso.

"Truth brought forth names in the world for us, and no one can refer to truth without names. Truth is one and many, for our sakes, to teach us about the one, in love, through the many." (-"Gospel of Phillip", Gnostic). Best tempo, M.M. 66- possibly meaningful, 66 is the number of Perfected Work... Praeludium.. Klavierer hier ist *wirklich* Solomon... Stil sittlich zu der Zeiten, alles wirklich schnell- mir scheint es moeglich irgendzeits ein bisschen flachlich irgendwie.

Johansen amazingly recorded virtually all of J. S. Bach and Liszt, all of Busoni, and much more. I know of about 1,300 tracks he mostly recorded in his studio in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin outside of Madison. He made his own record label as it were, Artist Direct, and produced hundreds of disks and later cassette recordings in the 1970's and 1980's. They were sold at Tower Records and elsewhere but are now only in the hands of collectors.

Good to hear from you, Iian! Gunnar did have his moments; he was an interesting pianist, scholar, and man. Too bad he was too young to have studied with Busoni. Speaking of Busoni, I hope to have some more Sirota recordings to share shortly. Can't wait to hear them.
