Despite the Astros domination of the NL Central in 1998, the Cardinals actually won the season series 7-5, including winning 3 out of 6 in Houston. It’s a far cry from 3-9 against the Astros in 1997 or 11-2 against the Astros in 1996.

The Edmonds catch early in the game to save at least one run (possibly more) was huge, but I think the biggest key to that game was the Pujols at-bat in the sixth inning with the tying run on third and two outs. Clemens had Pujols down 1-2 in the count but couldn’t put him away, and Pujols drove in the tying run, and on the next pitch, Rosen hit the two run home run. Had Clemens gotten Pujols out, it would hav been 2-1 Astros after 6 innings, with a chance to go to Lidge for a much as three innings (keeping in mind that Lidge also pitched three innings in game 6). They also could have used Oswalt for an inning or two (if Clemens couldn’t continue), which they eventually did go to Oswalt, but it was too late to save the Astros at that point.

I see what you're saying, but I disagree. If the ball Ausmus hit were to have gotten by Edmonds, that would have made it at least 2-0 Houston, and possibly 3-0. With Clemens due to hit next, I think it's highly likely the Astros would have sent Vizcaino home if there was any chance he would have been able to score. That means you would have most likely been looking at either a 2-0, or 3-0 score with runners at second and third, or a runner at second, and one out. Most likely, the Astros leave the inning up by at least three, and who knows how many more. That catch changed the entire complexion of that inning, and that game. Yes, the Pujols at bat was big, but if the Cardinals are down 3 or more early, that Pujols at bat might not have really mattered by the time the later innings rolled around. Even if Pujols hadn't come through in that situation, had everything else played out the same way, they still would have only been down by one run with a tiring Clemens on the hill, and a Houston bullpen that was running out of gas behind him.

@@cardinalsbaseballclassics I respect your opinion, and there are some good points as well. There were also a couple plays that didn’t go so well that could have cost us. As good as the Edmonds catch was, he made a throwing error in the next inning to allow the second run to score. I think we had a pickoff in another inning that cost us a chance at a big inning. But overall, the Cardinals got the big hits when they needed, and the Astros really missed some prime scoring chances in the first 4 or 5 innings of that game. If you let the 2004 Cardinals hang around with that offense in a close game, sooner or later, they will make you pay. I wish I could say the same for the 2024 Cardinals.

Im 40 yrs old now and this is the only MLB game I ever went to. I'm from east TN and it was our seasons end "pizza party" equivalent for our little league team. I found it by remembering the Gant Smoltz lead off HR in 96. Appreciate this video greatly. Should be in right field stands somewhere 😊

This specific game and moment is one of my all-time favs in a history of watching sports. Doesn't matter what happened in Game 7. Hell, I'm not a fan of either team even, I just like baseball! It's just because I said to my friend after two outs (we were cheering for the Cards this particular night) "we just need Eckstein to do some Eckstein thing, then we have Edmonds, a great .OBP guy, then if that can happen we have a CHANCE with one of the greatest of all time." I truly did say that. Out loud. And then Eckstein got the most Ecksteiny soft grounder single one can imagine. And Edmonds stepped up. And even he made it hard; how do you lean away from that 1-1 pitch? Step right into it my man!! But anyway, true to form, the magnificent Jim Edmonds drew a walk. And up came Albert Pujols. One of the very truly greatest players in the 130 year history of professional baseball. And proceeded to hit a ball that will live forever in my memory. Forever. And I have seen a lot of baseball and a lot of sports. Again, they lost the series? Who cares. Then the White Sox swept the Astros. Water under the bridge. In 50 years we won't even remember who beat who in the 2005 World Series. But we'll always remember this moment! Always.

I still wonder how this game would have gone for Ankiel if Matheny hadn’t gotten hurt right before the playoffs. It probably would have been a much more comfortable win for the Cardinals, assuming they still score those 6 runs in the risk inning. This game made me nervous towards the end because the Braves had been there before, while the Cardinals weren’t in the playoffs since 1996. If the Cardinals had not won this game, I don’t believe they would have won the series.

Of course Giants at that time lose the ballgame because of a Horseshit Bullpen along with a senile old Giants Manager in Felipe Alou
@86byrdman
@86byrdman Ай бұрын
Felipe Alou was good in 2003, but between 2004-2006, he lost his steam, and the game probably passed him by at that point. He was having issues communicating with his players and he was also kind of known for falling asleep in the dugout. It was unfortunate Dusty wasn't still the Giants manager at that time, despite the way the Giants lost the 2002 World Series. Dusty was the fall guy for that World Series in a way. I have no doubt Dusty would've returned as the Giants manager in 2003, if the Giants would've won the World Series in 2002. Looking back at it now, it's kind of too bad the Giants just didn't go from Dusty to Bochy. Yes, at the time it was nice to have Felipe Alou back in the Giants organization, but he wasn't the same manager with the Giants as he was with the Expos. The Giants probably should've stuck with Dusty for a couple of more years or until 2006, and then maybe make the switch to Bochy like they ended up doing in 2007 going from Alou to Bochy.
@86byrdman
@86byrdman Ай бұрын
Also, when I think of the 2004 Giants, I always think of how Vlad Sr. should've been on that team. There were conflicting reports that he wanted to play for Felipe Alou again, but then I heard reports that he didn't. Not sure which was true, but it would've been cool to have Vlad Sr hit behind Bonds for a few years to end the Bonds era. Having Vlad Sr here also would've made the transition from the Bonds era to the championship era last decade, a little easier. Vlad Sr's years with the Angels felt like a waste because he didn't win nothing there. Yeah, the Angels had playoff teams, but they never reached a World Series with Vlad Sr there. Yeah, that may have been the case if he came to the Giants around that time as the Giants had some lean years in the mid-late 2000's, and yes, as you alluded to, they had a terrible bullpen back then, but a middle of the lineup with 04-07 Bonds and a prime Vlad Sr. would've definitely kept the Giants at the very least in playoff contention.

This comeback doesn’t happen often, but this game is proof that no matter the score, a game isn’t over until it’s over. You still have to keep piling on because no lead is safe. I would have thought this game was over when it was 9-0, but there is no time limit in baseball.
