I sew Sam Woodyard try to audition for a band in a Paris night club in 1978 when I was 16 years old. Sam was a bad alcoholic and was so drunk he just stopped playing in the middle of a song. I could tell he knew he was good but his spirit was so sick from drinking. I was in Paris for a week staying with my father's former graduate student's and his X wife and her new boy friend who was putting a band together. It was all quite bohemian in the true sense of the world. My host Chuck Fadley was kind to let me crash at his place. I guess he could tell I was broke. Probably because I was so skinny. He gave me 100 francs and said help yourself to weed, food and beer. We all went out to this club where Sam was being auditioned. Im forgetting the Jazz player who was putting the band together David something. One of the best years of my life but I didn't realize it at the time. My parents sent me to Europe for two months with $500. I was only 16 at the time. I had to grow up fast.

The Master! This is my favorite era of Dave's playing. Perfect blend of chops and feel, and an improv monster, never repeated himself.
