I think it’s not really a parabolic radius. A parabolic radius is actually a series of flats very close together to form a radius. I know this because we used to machine ribs for a certain type of antenna for the government. It appears to be a true radius though. Sorry minor thing and really no issue. And I think a straight screen would be fine. I’m making one right now. My biggest problem is I’m trying to make it as a pre filter in front of my Aquascape bio falls. I’m pumping 8500 GPH from my skimmer. I have a waterfall and everything is great except for the cleaning needing to be done so often. The real problem is this thing has to gravity fed to the bio falls. Unless I change to pump out from the bottom of the sieve like you have. OR I make this thing sit way higher, which I really don’t want to do ascetically. Very good video sir. Didn’t mean to bust on you about the radius lol. 👍🏼👍🏼

I've been using this method for a few weeks. Lots of larvae, but none are crawling up the ramp to the top hole. Instead they were wriggling out through (and getting stuck in) my drainage holes. So I just enlarged my drainage holes so they're slightly larger than the BSF larvae, kept the bin at its normal tilt, and put another small bin below the drainage holes. I now have a big pan of squirming gold for my fluffy butts! Any tips on getting them to crawl up instead of down? I'm happy with the way things are working now, just curious if I'm missing something.

This video didn't show the whole process. We like to see it set up and working not a video of empty bins.

I'm not a skilled builder, but I got it. After I gathered the materials, mine was finished in about 1/2 hour. I didn't cut the holes. I melted them with a soldering gun. I don't like the cracking risk when cutting plastic.

This is by far the most simple design I’ve seen. I already have a maggot bucket for mine and don’t think I can produce enough scraps for a second compost but think I should make a go at it. Thanks!

Good stuff. Planning to make a seriously big one to roll 3-6k logs. (Assuming they are fairly round and not regularly shaped.)

I've watched a number of similar videos. The problem is no one discusses the spindle and wheels in any depth and no links to where I can find something similar. I've tried to source parts, but the myriad of options is mind boggling. I'd readily pay for a parts list for a proven build that I could do myself.

i live in new york city, ny and it snows here and get cold towards winter, i suppose the only way to raise BSF is to keep them indoors? i think there would be alot of flies whenever i open the bin right? i probably need to feed them when i move the bin outside?

Would have been much nicer if you actually showed step by step video of it in operation rather than a slideshow of the parts.

You make a video to show how to do something, but it consists entirely of close up pictures that don't show most of the thing you are discussing or lend any understanding of how to actually do it!

I found out the other day that eye bolts are designed to slowly fail as the eye opens under too much load. Welding them shut may lead to catastrophic failure without warning. I am not saying that this is very relevant to use in a tripod situation but it is relevant in others.

If you need to have a splice joint I would do a scarf joint rather than a butt joint. Also drywall screws are very brittle and should not be used to secure the hangers. Use structural screws.

Trying to figure out where you found flexible strap that wide. All I am finding at the Lowes is flexible 3/4" strap. I am assuming the 2x4 stubs radiating outwards are bolted ro the disks so they won't shift?

Super cool design and nicely explained! I want to build something similar and was just wondering why the "spacers" aren't contiguous through the whole beam making it solid. Is it just for positioning the perlons, or is it structural, or for weight, or is there some other reason?

Now, up the design so you can get the larvae out without lifting the mess of compost. One thought is a dedicated shop vac. Another is a tube coming out through a hole in the black bin.

Thanks for this really informative video! I have pretty much duplicated the idea on my own, and am happy to say nothing has bowed, buckled, or broke with a similar load. I did later change the top design to all welded components and using a 1 Ton chain hoist, but the legs were the important thing not to fail. So, all good and painted up with anti mold and rot primer. Thanks!

My wife and I came across this video and saved our rear ends. We are building a natural Cedar Log fire pit outdoor kitchen roof and we had varying weights to deal with. The first 2 were fairly light and the 2 x 4 legs and system worked flawlessly, then two monoliths were next and after about 2 hours of trying the two heavies, we elected to install 2 - 2 x 4's to each leg and once that was accomplished again worked flawlessly. thanks so much for the idea, we will upload a video showing it under load. Thanks again!!
