That turned out really nice and would be a great gift for Valentine's Day or most any special day! I've never tried using purple heart with a scroll saw. It's such a hard wood that I wasn't sure if the scroll saw would cut it well. Glad to know it was no problem using the right blade. Thanks for another interesting video!

Great project and beautiful work. It seems like a bit of waste to plane the 4/4 to 1/2”. Would it make sense to rip it in half on a band saw and then plane? The results would be slightly under 1/2 but you would have twice the yield.
@bobshomewoodshop799614 күн бұрын
To be honest, this project was over a year ago, so I don't remember the reason for sure. I resaw whenever I can, but with my tablesaw/bandsaw combination, I can only resaw up to a little less than 6 inch wide boards. This butterfly is about 10 inches wide. I know I could have broken it down into two sections each 5 inches wide, but at the time I may not have thought of that possibility, or I may have considered the extra breakdown of the pattern an unwanted step.

I enjoyed the video and totally agree that a foot pedal and magnification lamp are a necessity for myself. I've been using a magnification lamp for a long time but the lights no longer work. I checked out the one that Bearwood has from your link and wondered if you have an opinion on whether the fluorescent or led lighted magnifier would be the better choice? Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family from sunny Arizona! Thanks for all your great tips and video's!
@bobshomewoodshop799625 күн бұрын
Lori: I did a little research and found that LED lights are a better choice. They use less energy than fluorescent lights and last longer. I'm sure you've had fluorescent bulbs that sometimes flickered, and LEDs do not. Last, the magnifier will constantly be switched on and off, and LEDs are better for that use than fluorescent. I have both fluorescent and LED overhead lighting in my shop, and I have grown to prefer the LEDs. Merry Christmas to you and your family as well.
@bobshomewoodshop799625 күн бұрын
I just remembered that one of my earlier magnifiers had a fluorescent bulb, and I had to replace it more than once. They also have one of those little starters that I replaced as well. Both were a pain in the tuchus to replace. My current magnifier is LED, and it works flawlessly. It's bright enough that I rarely need to turn it up far from the lowest setting.
@SawdustmakerLori25 күн бұрын
@@bobshomewoodshop7996 Thanks so much Bob! Those are excellent points that I wouldn't have thought of. I agree regarding the LED lights being superior after you mentioned the problems fluorescent lights have. Light and magnification are the two most important things for me in scroll sawing because I've got eye problems. I've been procrastinating on getting a better magnification lamp due to their cost but it's time to spring for a better one! 🙂

This is very informative, thank you. Can you offer any guidance or generalizations on blade speed?
@bobshomewoodshop799627 күн бұрын
In general, if I cut long stretches of wood (such as the outside of a pattern), I will run the blade at full speed. I slow the blade to half speed or even less for more complex shapes and very tight turns. I have years of experience and hundreds of hours on the scroll saw, so I tend to work near full speed unless I am having trouble keeping the blade under control. If you're new st this, it would probably be best to start somewhere in the middle of the speed range until you get the feel for what works for you.

The white paper gives a glare that makes it hard to follow the sawing. I wonder what exactly could prevent this, probably some light from another angle, but then that might interfere with your work view...hmm. Anyway, thanks for the inspiration.
@bobshomewoodshop7996Ай бұрын
I use a lighted magnifier with my scroll saw, but I usually leave the light off when I am recording video because the white patterns are too bright. Occasionally I forget to leave the light off, but I don't think I did that here. Even so, I know that the picture can still be too bright. I'll do some experimenting with camera angles or find another way to tone down the light for future videos because I agree that the light level is too high. Another idea just came to me - maybe I can use paper that is less reflective. Anyway, thanks for the comment.

what brand of blades is a good middle price? Your video is very informative
@bobshomewoodshop79962 ай бұрын
I've never compared prices because scroll saw blades are relatively inexpensive. As far as other brands go, I used to use the Flying Dutchman blades until my source disappeared and found their performance to be very good. The Niqua blades are another brand I use and find to be excellent. Many of the brands have sample packs, and that is a good way to try the blades to see which ones you like best. The scroll saw is meant for very fine work, and I consider performance the top criterion for blade choice. I have never paid much attention to price. When I need blades, I buy them in quantity. I just received several dozen #3 and #5 Pegas Modified Geometry blades today.

Would you let me know what you think of the table portion of the saw. Specifically, do you feel it is a detriment that it is not a cast iron table? Thanks.
@bobshomewoodshop79962 ай бұрын
Honestly, I do not know what advantage a cast iron table would bring. I have had the Pegas scroll saw over a year, and I have had no issues of any kind. The only improvement I would make would be for the table to extend farther out in front of the blade. For long pieces, a lot of the workpiece hangs out over the front of the table. Of course, I could also lose 30 pounds and that would probably solve that problem.
