An HR employee is the equivalent of a political commissar. Comply or be deemed a heretic and 'dealt with'.

I've never thought of HR as a unit that makes you employees feel at home at the office but only doing it to prevent them from leaving or suing. But in hindsight, it makes total sense under capitalism where everything is measured with money. In that sense, HR is walking a fine line between giving employees the illusion of belonging and not spending too much effort and money on them to keep profit intact. However, I find it fascinating that in where I live, HR is seen as tyrannical a-holes who wouldn't listen to any inputs and would just punish disobedient employees. Yet, they still serve the exact same purpose. To prevent employees from leaving or suing. I think it's probably because of cultural difference and their bargaining position. Here, conformity is the social norm and obedience is highly valued. You're also expected to be always thankful of what you have and compare yourself to the less fortunate. And of course, good jobs are not easy to find either. Many HR departments here love to throw those rhetoric.

Let me save you the verbosity: HR is there to protect the company FROM the employee and to gain a false sense of trust with them for the company's benefit.

I’m surprised anyone else is surprised that HR exists primarily for employee retention and boosting workplace productivity. Why WOULDN’T any business try to implement this? Of course that’s what it’s all about. Anything meaningful in life exists as a result of a positive feedback loop (could also be called a win-win). Happy employees = employee retention = more productivity = more profits; and on it goes. Otherwise, the house falls apart. So yes, the ultimate goal of HR in business is more profits. This is why communism is unsustainable. (Gasp! The commie cliche!) It’s built not around a positive feedback loop, but a chain: Government gets all power - feeds all people equal $$$ - people are not incentivized to improve - government gets less and less over time - system ultimately fails. You NEED all parties to gain from each other’s gain for it to work.

I had some bosses who gave empty promises and I held on for longer than I should and didn't complain far enough up the chain and I burnt out and quit. It made me lose my confidence because it felt like I was gaslit into believing that taking on the work of 2-3 other people when we became short was totally normal and I was made to feel ridiculous for asking for help because I wasn't being "realistic." I hated who I was at that job by the end. Thankfully I was able to get a better job. It's not perfect, but I at least don't feel like my boss is manipulating me every day and I have way better work life balance. I make more now than I did at the old job, so I really wonder why I stayed there unhappy as long as I did... 🙃

I used to work at a startup. It was a great place to work until they got big enough to establish an HR department, which was actually rather late, after we had about 1000 folks. With in a couple of years the place was full of folks who didn't really care about the product any more and just wanted to make it like they did wherever they came from. I was relieved when they laid me off in the third round of op ex reduction. Maybe that's just part and parcel of becoming a successful (large) company. I still use the product, and some times just have to bang my head against the desk when I see some of the changes they've made to the industry leading interface. It seems like the company became intent on driving the dedicated and smart folks out.

Do people actually think HR is resources for humans? It's resource management. They're there to gaslight you into thinking you're lucky to have the job. And you're right. If they cared about lawsuits they'd keep a lot of paperwork and fire harassers.

havent watched yet, but i will say off the bat that recently it occurred to me that "human resources" alone as a name implies we as people are just resources used for benefit of the company. this should be a great video

We didn’t have HR until we let women in the workplace. And I’m convinced women were only allowed at 1st as a result of male bosses wanting to bang their employees wives and look how it bit them in the ass 😂
@hal20eezayАй бұрын
You guys seem to forget HR workers are…well…workers. They still have to put up with manegement BS and that includes recruitment/training. Most of the time, HR reps will have to report some sort of “culture” stats like turnover rate and shit, thus you see those satisfaction surveys and all when really they’re just trying to get management off their asses, just like any other field/job. Remember, it’s not the HR department that fired you, it’s C/D level management that told HR to fire you under any false pretense like “doesn’t fit the culture” or some shit like that when they really just want to cut budget. Don’t go jumping on the HR reps throats as they’re just doing their job. I agree with most points of the video but assuming HR is an autocracy and make decisions of their own is just false.

HR isn’t your friend, but that doesn’t mean they are your enemy. HR is useful when the employee and employers goals meet. Which is quite often. It’s only when there is an imbalance of employer/employee interests that it’s an issue.

Okay I'm 4 minutes in and I'm detecting a very anti-capitalism vibe. You make it sound like profit is bad or something. I mean all profit is defined as what you have left over after expenses and liabilities. What company goes into business to lose money? You act like HR is only in the private sector when they have HR in government. Also a company doesn't "own you" indentured servitude is illegal.

I agree that HR is partly used to keep workers content so that they keep working, but Id also add that it’s meant to dissuade workers from communicating issues with their coworkers and realizing their shared problems that the company refuses to deal with. By gaining the trust of the workers, the HR department does something corporations truly value, preventing the organization of unions.
