happened to me. I kept the trailer tight to the curb while turning. but checking the fish eye mirror I see a small car has squeezed between the tandems and the curb. I stopped before running over the car. she needed to back up and surprised me when she jumped the curb then drove down the sidewalk until clear of my truck then dropped onto the street.

Also, if at all possible, try not to have your trailer axles all the way back. Have them toward the front to help lessen the turning radius needed.

I remember when I was in my car making a left turn when I saw a car in the right lane making a right turn behind a semi and cutting in between the trailer tandem wheels of the semi and the right curb. When the light turned green, the car tried to move forward to turn right. The trailer wheels then removed the car's front bumper left side.

"Caution, this vehicle makes wide right turns" "Caution, stay back 200 feet" Average length of an 18 wheeler is 72 feet. Average radii of a street corner can be anywhere between two and 15 feet. This information is in public domain. Unfortunately, most drivers are bad at math and can't solve simple problems and besides too many live by the 'Me, myself and I' code. It's so damn simple. Just let the large vehicles do their thing, give them the room they need and stay clear. These heavy machine operators are busy working.

That's not a 53' trailer either, wheels are at the rear end so the video doesn't take "tail swing" into account. Doing a button hook with a 53' with the wheels forward will take out a car in the lane to your left.

2:30 the truck drives pass the double yellow lines, isn’t that a bad thing? If a car were driving while the truck was making that turn would the truck be at fault or the driver

The CVSA is an absolute joke. You’re just another for profit entity that oversteps your boundaries and get laws passed to infringe on people’s lives. You people have no knowledge of the industry. I think you people started off with good ideas at some point but now all it’s about is complete control over people and you’re doing by telling everyone it’s about safety and everyone in the industry knows it’s more about profits.

Please, anyone watching this, never do this. This is called a jughandle. Keep your tandems as close to the curb as you can and do what's called a "buttonhook". If this is correct, the method you have described, please reference where I can find this from any credible source. A DMV manual, DOT, CDL drivers manual. Not from someone who says "Trust me, I know because I've been doing this for a long time". Or the other one is "Trust me, I know, I've been doing this for 30 years". Immediately question anything they say. You know why? *Trust me,I've been do this for a long time.* 😂 This makes me curious because the creator is an insurance company.

There a significant lag in the reaction of the rear tandems to the steering axle which can be measured in feet. Using a forty foot trailer's which is or was the norm when I first started driveing. It's 8 feet. Obiviously with today's longer tractor's and trailer's, the footage has increased. If and when one develops a technique referred to as doing a "Button Hook". Regardless of which direction they turn. If and when done correctly. One can if and when traffic warrent's it. Make any corner, without issue's. A driver really only need's to pay attention to steer axle and the last axle on the trailer or set of trailer's they are pulling. It's ironic how a OTR long hauler, will after spending a couple of week's or longer. Utilize the technique which is quite noticeable to any and all other's. When they park the truck, get into their auto and drive home. Will instintively continure to do though considerably shorter; Button Hooks.

My trucking school told us to never use that technique of going into a turn whilst driving into oncoming traffic before the turn. But it makes sense. Was told if done on the test it would be an automatic fail though. I have heard a lot of contradictory stuff with the "rules" or "techniques" to use.

Idk if the four wheelers don't know or they don't care. And another thing I hate is when you are on a 2 lane back road barely wide enough for a semi and knowing damn well you gotta go over the line a little in a curve and they wanna speed up

I know this is the proper way to turn, did it for years. It always bothered me to have my right signal on and then swing into the left lane. I started putting the left blinker on for a second or three as I swung out and right back to the right once I knew the left lane was mine. As I said I know it is not the taught way and would probably fail a cdl test.
