If the valve stem is stuck and I cannot get to the guide, what is the best way to loosen the valve stem from the piston without damaging it?

Thank you! My instrument had just come back from the shop and didn't work! The guides were all misaligned. All the valve numbers were covered by the guide and the valves themselves were out of order. *smh Thanks for your quick fix it's all working and sounds great!

I've heard people say to strip off the lacquer as it obviously makes the instrument sound better because they see old pros with no lacquer on their instruments. No, old pros don't strip off the lacquer. They WEAR it off from years of playing many hours per day.

I did not know how important an accurate flat surface was hard to find until looking for a trombone slide stone. I have a small square that might work for this type of repair just need to find it.

A friend of mine bought one of the Yamaha knock-off flutes from China and it started to have problems after two months of use. The base of the mechanism started to separate from the body and when it was sent to the repair shop, it could not be soldered back on. The instrument was a piece of garbage and a waste of money.

Amazing video! I did something similar with a screwdriver up against the inside of the bend, and then used a hammer with gentle taps. I think the solid vibration/mechanical taps work well. And heat with penetrating oil, too. I'm learning a lot!

Thank you, this is very informative. Do you carry Dark honey gold Lacquer (cognac) spray to touch up an Alto P Mauriat 67RCL Saxophone? or do you know which color number that matches it?

I think dipping it in water is quenching the metal and adding some hardness. When you anneal metal, you want to let it cool very slowly to keep it soft.

My second valve is falling down on its own how do I fix this
@tjs114Ай бұрын
This is actually the exact opposite of the way I had my horn repaired back in the early 2000s. Myself and the repair shop came to the conclusion that adding thin silver sleeves to the valve casing would be easier and longer lasting. They used incredibly thin sheets of silver (like less than 1mm thick) to build up the casing walls to make the worn valves fit correctly. They then used a type of electroplating to bind the silver to the casing. Nearly 20 years later and the work still holds -- they even got sneaky and used one layer of rose colored silver in the layering so I can see if there is any new wear. It was the repair shop that studio musicians in Los Angeles used since the 1950s, but they closed around 2010 because they couldn't find anybody willing to take over and maintain their level of work.

My aunt was a contemporary and good friend of Ethel Merker and was also a professional horn player. She taught me and when the whole detachable bell business started up she very sternly informed me that I could buy a detachable bell model if I so choose, but if I ever dared to convert any horn she had any connection to that she'd murder me and if I did it after she'd passed, she'd haunt me to my final days.

I am trying this myself on a flute I bought on Ebay (1945). One of the pivot keys won't budge. The others were fairly tough to get out- kind of gunked up, but one will not budge at all. I am using a woodwind repair screwdriver. Tried WD40, silicone spray, and tapping the screwdriver with a mallet to no avail. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!
@TheBrassandWoodwindShopАй бұрын
If it is one of the trill keys, you can usually leave it there and don't worry about it. If it is the right hand keys, then you will need to get it off no matter what. One thing you can try is using vice grips to hold on to the screwdriver to get a little bit more leverage. You need to be careful though because you could damage the head of the screw. If that fails, you will need to drill out the pivot screw and replace it after it is out. It is a big job and it comes with it's own risks. Hope this helps!

How do you avoid tramlines when using.
@TheBrassandWoodwindShopАй бұрын
You can use an old drum head which helps. You can also put felt on the head of the magnet. These help but don't always stop everything. You need to be very careful when using this. If you are getting a line, you probably want to move down to the smaller magnet or ball.

Hello! I have question, whenever I play any note on the oboe that requires the 2nd key on the lower section, the notes do not come out, I’m not sure if the problem is my embouchure, reed, or the instrument itself-Heres a video of what im talking about: kzbin.infoDsdyVU3jh48?si=GKI5s6b9Hco-UPR_

Awesome tutorial! I hope you don't mind me asking as this been puzzling me. What if there is a play with the key that uses a pivot screw and that key move sideways? Example if this happens on the right hand keys or the trill keys of the flute. How do we go about in stabilising or removing the play with this kind of key with a pivot screw? Can we swedge the tube or push one or both posts inward?
