Since there is no real reason for another contact of yours, I will share a few things here in hopes that you and others will understand some things that went on: Fresh out of the NOI, I joined the Communist party of America. The same year I entered university Majoring in Philosophy. After taking an elective on early Arab civilization, I had to read a bit about a man named Muhammad Ibn Abdullah (AS). Shortly after, I took the shahadah. This was in 1984. At that time, there was not much literature to study in English, so I read what I could find. Eventually, I moved to the East Orange area and found myself attending the Masjid on Lincoln Avenue where at that time Dawud Adib was Imam and Just before Abu Muslimah took over. Coming out of the nation not too long before, I found it disheartening that every black person there was bombarded with the idea that anything said good about ourselves was nationalism! Needless to say, we still sat through long-as still goes on- kutbahs and lectures on the eloquence of the Arab. It was not until many years later that a black bother told me that Umm Ayman was black, that Zaid (RAA) was described in Arabic as Dark skinned, Ammar Ibn Yasir, Usamah Ibn Zaid and a host of others would be considered "black" today if not of total African heritage. Add all of that to the hatred shown to Bilal Phillips, who translated many of the books that I read as a new Muslim, and I will tell you that had it not been for looking beyond the "students of knowledge", I would have left the Deen. Right up until 3 years ago, when I taught self defense on 4th avenue in my school "The Ummah Fight Camp", directly across the street from a masjid, brothers were walking around with large copies of Usul Al-Fiqh and not giving salaams! Ending this Ahki, I will say that you have been a breath of fresh air. I can understand why you avoided the drama, but you have a mission to continue and Insha'Allah, you will. I also understand that you are not new to the scene lol. It was not until, however, that I saw you did not think it was "Haram" to mention the ethnicity of some Sahabah that I felt you should be credited with what I believe is due thanks. And if we haven't prepared ourselves, what are we going to consistently do in order to be prepared for the Last Day. And Allah knows best.
