It looks like what happened is Chicken Soup of the Soul saddled Redbox with millions of new debt when they bought the company. i.e. take out debt to buy the company, and then put that debt on said company that causes it to eventually collapse. This is the same thing that happened with Toys-R-Us.

If I had been working for Redbox. I would have started looking for a new job after Blockbusters closed down. And especially after Netflix DVD shut down. As the writing was on the wall.

I used to do Redbox. But by making a special trip to pick it up and then drop it off, I was actually spending more with gas and rental than what it would have cost for a cheap digital rental and not have to go anywhere. So I did that for a bit, until I got my streaming stick and found websites where you can stream everything for free in HD. So I've pretty much been doing that, which really helped as Netflix DVD went away, which is what I used to use to cheaply rent older movies and tv shows.

I just passed by what was obviously an abandoned Redbox the other day in Clayton, NM. I guess this explains it.

I just finished watching Bright Sun Files' video on Redbox, and I really enjoyed it. It was insightful to hear perspectives from both an executive and lower-level employees. While the executive provided valuable insights, hearing from the employees on the ground added depth and a different perspective to the story.

Even though i was never interested in buying from this company, i remember going to my local Walmart and saw how it was randomly shut down for good.

I lived in West Philly as a kid and I used to love riding the subway. Never could I imagine actually walking around down there, though. A different kind of thrill for sure.

Terrible story but good on ya for making a video. I figured this video was years old until I looked at the date. Who is / was still using DVDs? I have not seen the machines or even DVDs in some time. Obviously that was the problem. Either way, hopefully y'all get due compensation!

2000+ DVDs. You could go to Disc replay. Then take the proceeds and add $2.75 or so and you can afford a starbucks. I’m so sorry this happened to you. I wish you all the best in finding a new job.

One thing ill never do is a 401k with any conpany i work for. Ill take my own money out my own check and save it whrre I know itll be alot safer

There's a functioning machine near my home, I am tempted to rent a movie but scared if the machine is gone tomorrow. What would happen if I rented a movie and then there's no more machines? Please help.

I’m so sorry this happened to yall. I remember renting Redbox movies every week so my family could have a movie night with pizzas we made from scratch. I hope all the former employees find their way out of the water they got thrown into :(

I worked for redbox for almost 11 years. I really liked the job. I retired in May of 2022, and was able to get everything I had coming to me. This included my 401k, which I rolled into another account. A lot of people are not aware of the fact that redbox RENTED movies from some of the studios. Those were the ones that had to be removed by a certain date and returned. So redbox is probably going to be liable for movies not returned to the studios toward the end.

Its a real shame redbox screwed their employees.....

Put that outside in a pub in the UK, not only would the whole vending machine be at max capacity but there'd be a group of mates who would carry that machine like a coffin to then dump it in a church out of respect because it can't produce anymore alcohol absorbing goodness. I've seen very similar things happen.

There is no excuse for the decisions made by Redbox executives, all those complicit deserve jail time. But I can’t help but think, how did the employees not see the end of the line coming for Redbox as a financially viable business model? Renting hard media as a business has been dying for decades, Netflix killed Blockbuster literally a decade ago. Did not everyone see the end coming?

I’m sorry but if you work for a DVD company in 2024 and you are shocked the company closes, that’s on you. You were irresponsible to still be working there if it was something you needed to count on.

As of today their website does not even have proper ssl certs as they are expired.

Just don't say anything about the 1,000+ DVDs you have. They'll probably not bother to ask for them back. After a period of time, just sell them.

I worked for Redbox in Bolingbrook Illinois so I understand completely. I'm glad I used all my vaca days because I knew this was going to happen.
