Hello. Wonderful informative video. I have an Acer palmatum atropureum, little princess and orange dream in 3 litre pots. I've the 3 of them for 2 years. I live in Donegal in Ireland and we're prone to strong wind, rain and very cold winters. I put my pots into a poly tunnel from Dec-March incase of snow and bad frost. How do your acers fair and assume you get some harsh weather too? My garden is clay soil, on top of that I haven't huge space or obvious areas to plant trees and shrubs so if I do I'd need to plant dwarf variations like the little princess etc. I think I am probably best keeping the atropureum and orange dream in pots to control the size as they can get quite big. Finally, are most acers okay with direct light for 8/9 hours a day? I want to surrounded by these trees as they are the most stunning creations 😍

I'm finding myself loving sentinel/ sentry tall columnar tree styles. Loving the upright style more than sideways reading trees. I live in Ireland so our climates are very similar. Do acers struggle at all in pots? I have an atropureum and just got a 'Little Princess' and planning on keeping acers in pots as we haven't a lot of garden space.

So nice to see colorful trees that survived summer in good shape. I've still got most of mine under 70% shade cloth here in Texas, as temps are still bumping 90 F (32 C)...and sad, dried out leaves from the wind and heat are everywhere. Sigh...

Great video again Carl. Thanks for all the info. I noticed my Trompenberg has suffered this year like yours . After a strong vigorous start, re pot up. Only to re pot down, now going to re pot down again very soon. It has also been far too wet and cold a summer for my liking. I am trying to use Raspberry canes from the previous season (2024) rather than bamboo canes for a more natural look. Cheers keep up the good work growing and videoing.

It’s been a very wet year as you say and actually my trees that are in the smaller pots compared to their size have done the best in terms of growth 👍

Hiya, just wondering if you've encountered a white powdery substance on the roots? I planted a small seiryu in spring this year and it had that. I left it alone but it doesnt seem to have grown much. Also whenever i water it, it seems to smell a bit moldy. I dont know if that's a bad sign? 😂
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 4 күн бұрын
Not had that myself but it does sound like overwatering. I always let my trees get a little dry then soak them. The lack of growth is also a symptom of root damage as seiryu is a faster grower 👍

Great info man! How cold does it get there ? Do you have snow in your area ? Do you move them inside your unheated garage or you leave them out all winter ? Thank you

Hi, it does not snow often and only gets down to -2-3. Never moved them, but I use smallish pots so the root ball they grow protects them.

@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 15 күн бұрын
Hi Sarah, the garden centres offer very generic advice. There are over 2000 types of Acer and they just play it safe, when in fact some will tolerate sun well in the uk. I have a more recent video with 19 sun tolerant varieties. Not the garden Center plants should not go straight into direct sun as they are grown indoors effectively. Better they are put in sun next spring.

I prune out very small branches because I like the tree to be more sculptural looking. Is this wrong? You said that the leaf cover provides shade for the tree. Viewing your vid from NW North Carolina. Thank you.
@Japanesemaples

It’s really just my preference not to prune, but I would consider not pruning too much in the early years if heat / sun are an issue 👍

Living in a land of no sunlight, your yard here is non-organic. All gravel and astro-turf, so you're going to have a much higher temp in the air of your yard than in an organic area. In temperate USA, my concrete deck can get up to 30 degrees hotter/dryer than down below in my yard. Simply from grass and soil being on the ground.

Mine are not in a pot, but in the ground in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It can get very cold and up to a foot of snow. What do I need to do to protect during winter months?
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 23 күн бұрын
A good layer of mulch on the ground and possibly four posts with tarpaulin over them if they are very young. They are hardy so once established should do fine 👍

I bought 6 new 1-gal Acers today (Sept. 2), all grafted Mikawa varieties about 25 cm tall. Should I leave them in the small plastic pots they came in, repot them to 2 gal pots, or plant them in the soil? Im in Asheville, NC, USA, USDA zone 7a. Thanks, John Thorne
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 26 күн бұрын
Hi John, I’m guessing you’re season is similar to the uk and it won’t be long until the Autumn. In that case leave them in their pots. Reasons are, they are happy enough, a tight root ball will protect them from the cold, more compost the roots won’t have time to grow into won’t help and new compost means more nitrogen. They should be winding down for the winter now after the late summer grown, so let them be and repot next spring just before they leaf out 👍

Hi Carl I am really enjoying your channel. I am a novice collector with about a dozen Acers which I have collected over the last three years. I find there is quite a learning curve as all the trees are different in how they respond to location, watering, feed and pot size. I bought a beautiful red variety which went down hill very fast, so I decided to repot and found that it was water logged even though I had used the same compost mixture and grit as all the others. It seems to be responding so fingers crossed. I picked up another unamed acer from Lidl last year and decided to put it in the ground as I didnt have a suitable pot. It has grown from around 60cm to well over 2 metres in that time and is so healthy, so it just shows how different they all are. I will follow your channel as you have a very relaxing style . Great work !!!

Ah Ha moment on the pot size. I think I could have potted my Acer one size down, which would have been one size up from original pot still I think it’s not too too big, but I won’t expect too much new growth… I guess. However, I do have a little bit of new growth, but the old leaves are losing their red, which I think indicates not enough sun, it gets direct beating full sun 12 noon to 5:30
@Japanesemaples

I always drench my trees until I see bubbles appearing from the compost. I then let them get slightly dry before repeating. This encourages root growth to find water in the spring, so the tree has a great root system ready for summer. Small pot size is also key 👍

Beautiful tree! I've been planning to plant it in my garden where it receives 6-7hrs of direct sunlight, please suggest me will the leaves get burnt or will the tree get even more beautiful with this amount of sunlight? (I'm from Nepal with summer temperature of 22°C-32°C average)
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples Ай бұрын
This is tricky because these do well in direct sunlight but I think your temperature being that high could be a problem. If you can avoid wind will be key as hot dry wind is a problem. I would leave one in a pot for the first year and test it first to see if it does well. 👍
