That find is a whelk shell for sure and the hole may be very likely punched out by natives to use as a tool. I'd say very likely that was from an old mound like my above comment, but then again coulda been hauled in from elsewhere and broke along the way or with time. I've seen both aspects.
@JK-dp6ye23 күн бұрын
Great stuff! I recently saw a picture of a barge with tons of shell midden from Tick Island to be used for road fill and septic drain fields. 1940's-1960's. One of the most significant and quality Indian mounds and artifacts in Florida come from and are there. Sad to think it's in a septic drain field or under US 17 or various side roads. If the bottom is very warn or shows signs of it, very very likely native!

This area intrigues me...other NWR's are often where one drives to bird watch etc. Is there any driving there or is it purely on foot?
@DELANDIGSАй бұрын
zero driving. there are two ways to enter, one from the south. It has an old shell road, but is gated. foot and bicycle traffic only. The main entry point is from the north. There also is only for foot and bicycles. The shell road was built during the lumbering years 1890's+ and it followed the rail line. the refuge runs west to the St Johns river. Wildlife includes numerous birds, gators, boar, bear, bobcat, deer, fox, otters, snakes, other reptiles and bugs bugs bugs!

That was intense and I felt so scared for you guys when you heard noises. That area is EXTREMELY haunted and tortured souls abound there day and at night. Some horrible events that aren't recorded from back to 1760s and on. So much slavery, hardships and suffering as well as the Natives too and diseases. Be safe out there, heard too many haunted "tales". On another note, I think the gentleman is mixing up the Alexander house with the Starke house.

I would love for you to do a video on Enterprise! That is ironically the most historical on so many levels. The oldest grave of a European south of St. Augustine and the many various operations from early mid-1800s to early 1900s there. 2nd Seminole war activty there and high ranking Confederate escape to Cuba via that area.
@DELANDIGSАй бұрын

@JK-dp6yeАй бұрын
That brick you found by the lake, that also looks very much of the 2nd Seminole War era. Find them all the time in other areas and the road ran not too far from there connecting Forts. Often items lost of very short term fortifications are off record. I would date it 1700s- to mid 1800s for sure! No doubt scouting parties were all through that area, they even camped on bird island in Lake Jesup, over a dozen strong lol.

I am intrigued by the grassy areas and large areas of clearing (little to no undergrowth. ) something lays beneath there in my opinion. Florida rarely has grassy areas in environments such as this. Granted, shell middens may to some extent, but not even like this one. I imagine a Bulow Plantation like brick structures that fell lining the floor underneath. Slave cabins, old out building or even the 1700s plantation itself. Lot of history and I wish the State would preserve it and do some research. Otherwise it will be lost and out of context forever as with so many places they buy up and then do nothing but barb wire it in ffs.
@DELANDIGSАй бұрын
I thought the same, no trees just grass
@JK-dp6yeАй бұрын
@@DELANDIGS Yes, it is indeed odd how expansive that grass area is. On a separate note, wherever the trash pit (often the outhouse) is, would be EPIC! Either the 1700s or War Between the States plantation. Whoever finds it, I hope they do it properly and document well, as that is where so much knowledge and history will be gained and learned. The medications, imports, how and whom purchased from as to establish travel routes etc etc. So much can be powerful knowledge there. The State doesn't do JACK in those regards.
