Just as an side, ATYC or AWS isn't itself 100 % infallible - there was a terrible disaster in Northern France during one of the 1940's winters, due to ice forming on the ramp and insulating the pick up shoe. The driver thus ran through his sticks in thick, freezing fog, and slammed into a standing train at full speed - the engine was thereafter known as Le Charcutier' - 'the Buitcher.'

Nice to se some of the late Mike Sharman's lovely models at work again. I'm lucky enough to own one of his engines. RIP, Mike

The Murwillumbah XPT service going through Old Casino. Wow. I remember as a teenager in 2003 travelling from Wagga Wagga to Sydney on the overnight service. then on arrival to central to catch the Murwillumbah XPT service all the way just near the Queensland border. Really enjoyed that day service and seeing the nice North Coast area by rail. Shame that good old line is closed for good. :( Great choice of music here of Crockett's Theme from Miami Vice. 👍🏻

I think all documentary film makers should see this well presented film. They could learn a lot about not mixing too loud sound fx over the narration. 😊

Years ago I drove to Byron Bay and saw the remains of the Murwillembah line. Now that the Old Qld Tweed Heads line is being extended to Coolangatha Airport, it is time that the Casino-M'bah line us reactivated, upgraded and extended to C'gatha Airport. From here, Northern NSW visitors have access to the whole Gold Coast, via QR and the Coast Light Rail system ( also extending to the Airport). Even with the change of Gauge ( QR vs NSW) a central change point( the Airport) will lessen any inconvenience.

We screwed up when we closed all these rail lines, from Bombala to Murwillumbah

There can be no doubt there was a bit of skulduggery involved in it's scrapping not dis--similar to the Brisbane Coolangatta line. Embankments and tunnels are in pretty good nick but I'd say all the bridges and track would need replacing to get it going again.

A correction: the North Coast Overnight Express was truncated from Murwillumbah to Grafton in 1985 (when the North Coast Mail was discontinued), leaving the Motorail as the only passenger train on the branch. The running costs were very contested at the time of the Motorail's withdrawal; the review conducted in 1990 (after the Motorail was replaced by the XPT) found that the car wagons were the only part of the train that ran at a 'profit'. Sleeping car subsidies ranged as high as $600 per berth, although it depended on how the accounting was configured. The rolling stock, particularly the sitting cars, was approaching the end of its economic life. Sooner or later, some kind of replacement train was going to be required or considerable refurbishment of the existing train would have to be carried out. I'm not saying the XPT was the right answer for a replacement (far from it) but the old school Motorail was on borrowed time by 1990.

I'll have to check my copy of Red for Danger for the details of this collision, but I reckon "Flying Scotsman" in this instance refers to a named train, not 4423, the LNER locomotive.

Oh man, so many great memories riding that train, sharing a first class sleeping berth with my brother, having dinner and breakfast in the dining car, waiting for our car to be unloaded and washed at Murwillumbah, every trip was the highlight of my young life.

This train was always well patronised, Government said was only averaging 40% capacity 2 justify withdrawal, complete lie, truth is they wanted 2 withdraw all country passenger services & replace with buses but public uproar stopped this.

The "this" which happened at 4.50 was the newspaper train drawing level as it and Stacey's train were passing through Norton Fitzwarren station. ("We are on the down relief!" he exclaimed in sudden agonised comprehension to his doomed fireman.) The film could have made it a bit clearer, and maybe should have actually included that dialogue.

Great video!!! These were the golden years when the unrefurbished Comengs were around. I remember travelling on one on the Alamein line between Burwood to Flinders St and it was my very first time on a Melbourne train back in 1999. Comengs will be my number one train in Melbourne. Was this filmed in 1999?
