I love this song! Ray Price, the "Heir Apparent" to Hank, tries and succeeds to sound like Hank, in the years after Hank's death. --- In this song, I hear a piano, which I don't remember Hank ever using, and I think I hear a snare drum with a brush. The fiddle style sounds identical to Jerry Rivers. Ray's legendary "break-away" song from Hank, is said to be the 1956 "Crazy Arms". --- "Crazy Arms" included HARMONIES, which I never heard on Hank's major hits. --- The Fiddle in "Crazy Arms" was "single-stop", one note at a time, not the double-stop fiddle in this song, or the overwhelming number of Jerry Rivers' accompaniments for Hank. Buck carried on the "single-stop" fiddle style with Don Rich and the Buck-a-roos. --- Ray's "Steel Guitar" had PEDALS, a brand-new Concept at the time, a Concept never enjoyed by Hank. Hank's Steel Player, Don Helms, was GREAT. "Pedal Steel" is also GREAT, but "Different". Ray's last great Honky-Tonk Hit was 1961's "Pride". After that, "Country-politan", one of the biggest Tragedies in Music History, ruined Ray's music (Mel Tillis too, who had a Great Honky-Tonk Sound, prior to 1961). Each "genre" in the "Honky-Tonk Evolution" was GREAT, each having its own nuances, and reasons for listening.

Does anyone know who played lead guitar on this recording? That's some pretty sexy Tele-like licks--almost makes me think of an early James Burton, but I'm pretty sure it's not him playing.

I love Lefty's voice. RIP Lefty. Great song. I've listened to several others who sang this. With the exception of Merle Haggard they all mostly miss the mark. Lefty is the mark. Perhaps it's a particular cry in his voice that most can't match. Or the combination of the excellent musicians with the great singer. Anyway, this is the best.
