With all due respect, I think the interpretation of Rei analyzing Shinjis mind in the movie, BEFORE (key word BEFORE instrumentality actually happens, is not only something I find to be wildly mistaken, but is something I find to also be a interpretation that completely ignores the context of the movie and what Rei is actually doing with Shinji in his “interactions” with “Asuka”, “Rei” and “Misato BEFORE, instrumentality. And this interpretation has involved people throwing some of the most hurtful and shallow insults at people who sympathize with Shinji even in Evangelion like me. Firstly, when Rei asks Shinji “what do you wish for?” and we get the long scene where he is interacting with the “women” he’s known in his life, I have to clarify for the fourth dang time, this was BEFORE, instrumentality. It was not the beginning of it or during it, it was before. Rei in this long scene was looking into Shinjis psyche, his mind, way he viewed reality, and especially the other people around him. This is why I have put these;””” on the names of Shinjis perceptions of Asuka, Rei, and Misato. Because they are exactly that, Projections. Misato, Asuka and Rei are not actually there with him analyzing his mind and looking at how “pathetic” he is. When it comes to the scene where he has the big fight with his perception of Asuka, I believe that to be what he would imagines her to say to him and how he thinks she would treat him. While it also being a projection that represents how he sees himself, whether it be delusional or not. And while one could argue that this could technically be Asuka as it may be accurate to how she actually sees him, again there is nothing that suggest this if you actually look at what Rei is doing with Shinji in the movie itself. Unless you want to interpret it that way of course, but again, context matters. I feel like people will completely ignore the context of Evangelion, so that they can jump onto the train of blind and naive Shinji hate. And don’t get me wrong, it is understandable that people will hate Shinji for the things that he’s done in EOE. But I don’t believe it to be justified. And I especially don’t think it’s justified for calling fans misogynists for simply having sympathy for a character who has gone through such deep trouble as him. In fact it’s something that sickens me and genuinely pisses me off at times. That and some people are out there assuming that people who sympathize or even empathize with Shinji automatically hate Asuka and thinks that she deserves what Shinji does to her. It’s like if I encounter that person I really don’t few like there would be anything to say to them because I feel like they've lost a part of their commons sense. I apologize for my semi-long rant when it comes to this topic but I feel like I just had to say this here.

thanks for the comment, i never intended to simply insult others with my content, i added the little bit at the end about how attacking Shinji or people that relate to him does nothing but push them further away as a way to encourage the fact that you can discuss Shinji and his actions, condemn him or call him names because he's a character, but once you start doing that to real people its a line i think you crossed that shouldn't be. that being said i don't know if this analysis is in direct response to my video or just a general response to discourse, but i never implied the events before Shinji attacks Asuka were instrumentality, but simply showing the process of Shinji agreeing to instrumentality. i also think especially with how the original series explains whats occurring in the comparable scenes you would have to have missed a lot to not pick up on the aspect that its not the people Shinji is interacting with but his perceptions of them (but then again, people can easily miss very basic things). this is partly why i discard even discussing anyone but Shinji around the half way point of the film, because there is no point analyzing them when its simply how Shinji sees them, which is portrayed to be sexual objects and means to simply help himself with no recourse the other way. Asuka does literally assault Shinji before he does it and tells him indirectly he should die, which is horrible in its own right, but it's Shinji's actions that to me present the real issue, since he simply lashes back out and behaves in a way which is selfish. to a selfish and abusive action he just hits back with his own abuse. but, Shinji is also not defined by his past actions and perceptions. there is a good manga called Goodnight Punpun, which details a boy's coming of age but also his descent into deep and deeper despair and depraved actions, but only because he fails to at any point think about if what he is doing is correct, moral or how to fix it. he simply keeps existing, pushing forward and thinking the world will simply herald him for all his good actions, but grows bitter when no one notices. the message is in a way that, that you should do things you feel are correct not for praise but just cause they are right, and address your issues without pushing it back on others. the only reason i bring up Punpun is because it directly mirrors and better handles the issue you brought up, since by starting as a young boy you see Punpun isn't some monster who hurts others on purpose, but is hurt himself and simply doesn't know how to cope or fix his issues so lashes back. you see him as an innocent boy with dreams who is slowly worn down by life, just like you and I, like anyone. the true core of Punpun is seeing his actions and being disgusted, but acknowledging he follows a very similar path to everyone who lives, you could be as bad as Punpun, but you have control to not be, but also control to not just condemn people who act like Punpun in real life since they may also simply be hurt and trying their best to cope. i hope this addresses any issues you may have had, I'm open to any further elaboration or discussion because again, just because i maybe don't agree on a few things doesn't mean you aren't also a person with their own views, and we don't need to fight over those few points of conflict.

I cant exactly remember if I articulated it properly in this video or cut it, but i think people fail to realize that like, instrumentality in the original context is like a good thing. its a shortcut to a restart, and it kinda frames Shinji accepting that restart as a good idea that he's willing to exist in a world connected by others. EoE on contrast literally has Shinji say he would rather be alone and isolated because he doesn't want to be hurt and betrayed by others, but also still yearns for others, which isn't how things really work from the original message of Eva, you are going to get hurt but its ok and part of life. right now finishing up writing my nier automata analysis which under broad strokes, says the exact same thing, cycle of samsara but there is benefit in the pain. rebuild in my eyes then looks at the idea of the restart being a means to actually end the cycle, that a restart is unnecessary under the right circumstances because by toughing it out the characters come to some level of closure, which i recognized you from my rebuild vid so i know you know my feelings about that.

it came from a question Anno was asked before Evangelion began airing, "What were we trying to make here?" the "imitation" and "original" refer to the real experience and emotion the staff and Anno put into Evangelion, but they can never really make sure its shown properly, or that people will get it. what if they only imitated those things they were trying to show in the end, not truly capturing them? all they can do is hope people will get it, or it "existed within".

As someone (or more, a pile of people) with dissociative identity disorder, I can just say with confidence that lain lines up as a pretty good representation of this. The weird setting is a result of what extreme dissociation does to your perception of reality Honestly there's a lot in there that's just... idk how to really describe it properly but it feels like I'm seen, and I see things in there and know those experiences the scenes pertain to, the only other media that's really done that properly are Inside Mari, Moon Knight, Fire Punch. Lain just feels like a system's experience reading something like Akira while at the same time discovering they had DID and later after sorting things out (very unhealthily by the looks of the ending) made an anime inspired by the experience, even the 'villain' lines up as an experience with a shitty therapist Also btw there's (at least) 3 lains we can identify in the anime (The shy clueless one, the confident shouty one, and the shitty asshole one) so y'know the whole thing you got going here needs a bit of a rework

Shit sorry if I offended you. What i really mean in terms of me saying people don't "understand" lain it's the discourse really boiling down to it being about the internet. I noticed deeper philosophy and psychoanalysis concepts that exist in it so decided to make something on it, but that's just my reading. I don't have the same life experience so wouldn't see things from the same perspective, and I don't think my perspective is somehow higher than yours. Your own experience if it matches up is valid, and since you are actually able to tie it to that, means you do get lain. I never intended to invalidate your reading, since I had heard of it, only the one focused on the aesthetics of the wired being the internet, since I think we can both agree it removes a lot of depth compared to our own readings.

actually second reply cause i have another thing to say off your last bit, i tried to glaze over Freud cause i think his framework is kinda weird (search up penis envy and castration anxiety for an example) but his model of the ego, superego and id could match up depending on how far you want to stretch the confidence of shouty lain to a mediator kinda deal. Xenogears did a similar thing in it but i won't elaborate further on that. but again, personal interpretation stuff and i don't pretend I'm some paragon of knowing everything.
@Kwoog

@@ZUCC1N You didn't offend me or anything just wanted to add some personal experience to the discussion since a lot of DID representation in media unless gets entirely missed unless it's explicitly stated, and even then most of the stuff where it's explicitly stated to be DID it's treated like 'ooo scary look at the weird thing! oo they're gonna get ya!' or 'damn this person is broken and must be fixed!' instead of the reality that is 'this brain went through so much trauma while developing that it permanently altered how the brain functions and now it's multithreading entirely separate consciousnesses and now all these goobers have to try and work together to figure out what to do while sharing a body at the same time as trying to heal from all that trauma' Not to throw shade at systems that want to merge though, just we are a very complex system where multiple people have been the """main one""" at different points in life so a lot of us are developed and want to stick around Also not many people take what systems have to say seriously so thanks for actually listening

Yoko Taro said my favorite game Nier Automata borrowed heavily from Eva, which made me watch this masterpiece again after watching and not understanding it as a kid. Then I realized my previous favorite game Xenogears borrowed even more from Eva. Holy moly Anno is a legend.
@ZUCC1N
@ZUCC1N Ай бұрын
There's a problem with Yoko Taro saying anything in that he loves trolling. Nier Automata has crossover with Evangelion but deals a lot more with the contemplation of deciding your reason to live and how to live from the perspective of existentialist philosophy and how all previous philosophers have failed to truly derive a good answer to what meaning there is to life through that. Max Derrat actually only today published a video on this topic, but also i recently finished replaying automata and I am working on my own video on the topic that will tackle similar but different parts of the game in that context. I guess its the same outcome but different methods, but I don't personally believe that is ""borrowing"" from Evangelion. in terms of the Xenogears part i also hold a similar regard for it, Nier Automata and Xenogears are my favorite games of all time, but i also feel it's a bit naive to state it borrowed from Eva. Xenogears was in Tetsuya Takahashi's mind for years before it came out, he proposed it to be Final Fantasy 7 at the time that was in planning but it was rejected. that proposal was apparently even more ambitious and deep than what we got on Gnosticism and psychoanalysis. It less it borrowed from Evangelion and more they drew from basically the exact same wells of themes and knowledge, it's just Evangelion got a bit of a head start so was released earlier, and got far more regard especially considering how Xenogears turned out. I'll also recommend The State of the Arc podcast for Xenogears (and I'm currently working through their Automata series as well) who broke down Xenogear's history and the story, themes and philosophy in a run time that was longer than my actual playtime of basically 100%ing game. I also want to make something on Xenogears but i feel it would take a while with how deep i want to go on what is my favorite game ever, but i just hope more people can know about it, and with the resurgence of HD 2D, square enix might broker a deal with Takahashi on something... but that's just what i think.
@mobpsy1526
@mobpsy1526 Ай бұрын
@@ZUCC1N When I watched some Eve summaries and 3.0+1.0 in the past days, I immediatly had thoughts like: hey SEELE is like the Gazel ministry in Xeno and Krelian is pretty much Gendo because he pretends to work for Gazel but wants his own goal for all human souls to go with the wave existence (instrumentality project) because he wants to end suffering but also is personally hurt that Elly never loved him, again very much like Gendo. I agree with you that Takahashi had his idea for years and he has the same inspirations as Eve (childhoods end ie.), but some major plot points and even personal motivations of the villain Krelian are sooo close to Eve. Even the end conclusion of Xeno is basically the same, Fei convinces the wave existence/Krelian that being a flawed human is ok and they stop the instrumentality for Fei, just like Ayanami with similar godlike powers decides to stop it for Shinji. On Nier, I felt a bit funny too when I thought about Yorha being NERVE and the 3 main characters are loosely like the 3 mains in Eve, + again the ending is very similar. But yes, Yoko is basically creating his own philosophical work as a game with so many original elements that it feels much broader and deeper than Eve to me. So here my mind was much less "wtf" compared to Xeno.
@ZUCC1N
@ZUCC1N Ай бұрын
they certainly have crossover a lot i wont deny that. on the topic of the krelian and solaris stuff, that had aspects of it based of the book "Childhood's End" by Arthur C Clarke about aliens basically coming to earth and just watching humans for a bit in their ships akin to how Solaris roams around in the game. also indirectly tied to nier since that's literally the name of ending D lmao, so if you haven't heard of it highly recommend reading it.

I’m with you on hating shinji from EOE. To me EOE is an alternate ending to evangelion. The reasons I think this is because the instrumentality project in EOE is far different and more nihilistic compared to the television show. Another reason is that shinji is a completely different character from the TV show. The hospital scene, and him choking asuka really made me hate the movie TBH. Like I just genuinely think Shinji would never do any of those things Idk the instrumentality project in the television series was better IMO because it actually helped Shinji move on and be happy with himself. Unlike whatever the ending in EOE is supposed to be. The rebuild series made me fall in love with Shinji as a character again, it’s so relatable and I love it. the rebuild series is MY end of evangelion.

Nah, EoE's ending was perfect as is. Eva's full of anger and sadness, as is EoE...until the very end. Just the touch of kindness Asuka showed Shinji was enough. Rebuilds gutted Asuka and Rei's characters, shoved in a pointless fanservice pilot, utterly destroyed the mother's soul-Eva-child pilot connection and replaced it with NOTHING, reducing the Evas to monsters that fight other monsters, and ended with Shinji skipping to adulthood lead by the bland fanservice pilot with whom he had no chemistry. "Metanarrative" is an excuse for shallow, sloppy writing, compared to the original. Anno put his heart and soul into the original NGE and EoE. The Rebuilds were nothing more than a product.

A product that by the end reflects Anno's real life experience. The real in the title isn't just me thinking it's the definitive end but also the ending that in literal terms has shinji and the characters become ""real"" by moving on from the series. I acknowledge in the video 1.0 and 2.0 are inferior versions of the original but if you really write off the rest of the series for that initial problem you miss out on all the obvious anger and stress anno put in the later films. You are entitled to your opinion, rebuild has enough discourse where the ending is just agreeing to disagree, but it's clear 3.0 and 3.0+1.0 also has Anno's heart and soul in it

Wonderful everyday, held as one of the most impactful visual novels ever created, but also one that is incredibly disturbing in what it tackles and shows. the steam release contains only the first chapter out of 7 which spoilers i guess for how the game is structured is a generic yuri visual novel with one of the routes leading you into the rest of the game, well if you patch the rest of the game in. they had to do this cause steam does that for eroges, not letting explicit sexual content on the platform but also just probably wouldn't let the rest be on the store frontfor more than that reason too. at that point the actual game begins and to be honest is probably a lot for many people, but certainly tackles high level philosophical topics and how the desire to be happy can be foiled by the reality of life. i to be honest want to create a series on it chapter by chapter but it would most likely require me to do a play by play slowly explaining and building up the story as it goes, as i think its a goated message but you have to go through some really disturbing stuff to get there, so i think there is some value in also just going through it to explain it, and then only i have to bleach my eyes when i have to watch a dog do something that even the official patch dodges in putting back in. but that sort of thing would take a WHILE so its a long term goal, maybe when im able to slow my production down and make longer videos if i feel like it but rn gonna stick to my shorter sweet videos.

It feels like the creator of the series grew and so did his creation. I personally loved the ending because it chooses to show how love and connections matter. It shows that there are many continuities and that they all need to happen for the characters to grow.

I'm sorry, that isn't called "growing up" - it's just bad plot, deus ex machina and a way to insult all the readers and fans who made this series the cult classic it is. I cannot believe what it's creator did purely out of spite. This is worse than what happened to Pokémon when they removed Misty because her voice actress left.

damn it's like you kept being the same edgy boy who likes this "underground" anime Evangelion, while everyone, including Hideaki Anno decided it was time to grow up.

@@lcke8380 I'm sorry you see it this way but the Rebuild was so sloppy that it had to shoehorn an entirely new character into the story to even begin to edge the plot towards a favourable conclusion. And mind you, Mari had very little overall interaction with Shinji through the films but kept moving the plot in the background. Plus the five Adams theory makes very little canonical sense and even lore hunters struggle to make heads or tails out of it. The vast divergence from the original storyline also did it no favours, only confusing the fandom, new or old (if I was a first-time watcher, I'd be unable to grasp any of the train wreck it was from the second film onwards). TLDR; plot was bad and incomprehensible, adding Mari was a mistake and the lore breaks it's own established rules.

I'm happy the algorithm recommended this to me just now. I can tell this is a work from the heart. I binged the entirety of NGE last summer in a couple of weeks. I just wanted to experience one of the great classics of anime, but more and more, largely thanks to people like you making vidoes like these, that Eva means so much more. Thank you for showing me that!

regret to inform you this video directly informed my style where my videos are less explaining an anime but talking about its grander context. if you think that's getting distracted not telling you to watch them, but media doesnt exist in this vacuum i think its far more interesting to talk about how it fits into my life or a grander context, but still implore people to dive deeper into it in their own time. in this video i could have done that last bit better, because i simplified stuff to make my point easier to understand and yeah in that i removed a lot of info to the point some may call the explanation ""incorrect".

9:40 wrong. Rather, it is that the physical is privative of real actual gnostic being, AKA Pleroma, which Sophia created a demiurge out of which fragmented out of the Pleroma into nothingness. This demiurge took this divine Pleroma and trapped it in privative inexistence of the physical world. (alluding to neoplatonist description of hyle/matter as privation of hen/One/Good/Monad) The pneuma or consciousness/soul/"heart" is the spark of the divine trapped in man, which the demiurge encourages to dilute by endless incessant breeding. Jesus Christ then came as the snake in the garden to man to make man realize the rot of the Old Testament God, for the apple of the knowledge of Good and Evil reveals the Demiurge to be a false god for he is not Good.

2:48 evolution, in the brainstem, each mutation and shift in the brain is so because otherwise such a form incapable of doing so wouldn't be so as it would be dead. Each good mutation necessitates a pile of genetic dead end carcasses for everyone not having it. This has happened since abiogenesis

1:30 Hi. We do. Look into predictive processing, cortical columns, synaptic pruning, and Hebbian learning. Basically, the brain is a large folded-in area of 2 mm thick grey matter called the cerebral cortex, which is made for and directly jacked up to executing coordinated muscular movements, whereas muscle, bone, and fat make up around 75% of weight in a healthy modern man. The remainder are mostly the viscera, i.e. the digestive system, and the cardiopulmonary system. The viscera pushes food through a tube with gastric acid and microorganism which together make food into a liquid paste goop which is then squeezed out blood pumped into it, which is then pumped and shoved through the liver to maintain a barrier between the body and the contents of the viscera as well as to transform the squeezed out chemicals metabolically into something usable by the body. Then, it releases into the bloodstream, and is pumped into the heart which sloshes all the blood together and gets pumped over and over in all corners of the body where it dissolves and takes up again and returns to the heart again over and over, whereas going in the heart it is pumped twice, not just once to continue the flow of blood in the body, but pre-pumps it into the lungs to let sacks of hemoglobin which make up half of blood the other half being water into the lungs so that they can free up carbon dioxide and get in oxygen, so the blood while carrying various biochemicals of glucose and such is primarily a form of letting the entire body constantly be breathed oxygen into. Why does the body need so much oxygen? Because it burns coal. Yes, it oxidizes carbon, in the form of glucose, to make ATP, primarily to charge muscle movements by letting it reset from contractions. So what you basically have is movement. Humans are unique in the sense of having hands and the most developed eyes in the animal kingdom. So what you basically do is you move around using vision and then you manipulate the world using vision using your eyes, i.e. eye-to-hand coordination. Then you utilize shared space with other humans to birth sound into it using your voice to be able to share thinking with others, that is to say language, which is significant in that sound unlike sight is not oriented it is passive, you can't turn your ears away from a sound nor focus it anywhere. Sending signals to muscles takes very few nerve fibers, though. The drastic majority of neuroscience outside the brain concerns itself with perception, primarily touch, sight, and hearing. Touch works through a large amount of Merkel cells, sight works through a large amount of cones, and hearing works through a large amount of hair cells. Hair cells are unique in that each hair cell listens to a particular frequency of sound by the clever mechanism of the structure of the cochlea. Whereas cone cells have 3 different wavelengths they are sensitive to and average out color from nearby different sort cone cells, but primarily being coordinate. And touch is similarly coordinate. The space of touch is your body, most especially your lip and ridiculously largely your hands. The space of sight is your visual field which are two 2D surfaces overlapped over each other to make 3D vision by seeing the difference of them. So basically you feed a ridiculous amount of tactile texture, sight, and sound into a shit fuck ton of cortical columns, which is the brain itself. In those cortical columns is encoded a prediction of what is supposed to come into them. This prediction is in the form of memory. Memory is in the form of synaptic weights. Synaptic weight is modulated by the NMDA receptor glutamate activity over time mediated by the hippocampus. If what is coming into them mismatches that prediction, the synaptic weight changes in accordance with the law of Hebbian learning: neurons that fire together wire together. This is in accordance with Humean contiguity. That is to say neurons that are in time contiguity, space contiguity, and similarity wire together. The direction of the wiring is irrelevant given the structure of the cortical column, but basically can be said to be decided by which neuron fires first then wiring to one which fires after them. This is the primitive form of causality. This structure of reality perpetually rebalanced by prediction error in terms of synaptic weights is what thinking is. The brain holds in itself a reconstruction of reality, akin to the medieval microcosm-marcososm distinction, and like the mystics of that time, the aim is getting rid of the difference between the two, such as to minimize one's inherent error in the image of the universe in the form of the microcosm as is for example exposed by Paracelsus and Hermeticism. These cortical columns are encoded in a hierarchy. They exert a top-down influence over the prediction of reality. Error propagates up into them if it is strong enough to over-come this top-down influence of expectation of what the world is supposed to be. The higher up the hierarchy you go the more you interrogate and loosen fundamental beliefs and assumptions a person makes and has. And in formal science, that is to say mathematics (and logic), fundamental assumptions is all you have stripped of empiricism. What you see as objective reality is then this reconstruction of external reality within your internal microcosm of expectation of it perpetually interrogated by new incoming information, which primarily serves to execute appropriate dexterous hand movements, and moving in space from place to place using your legs. To aid in this reconstruction and coordinate it with the reconstructions of others (failing to do so makes you "live in your own world") you communicate using language, basically spoken using your tongue and mouth and voice box etc. being the case until the invention of writing and typing, with books basically being just people speaking monologues at you. People love to be pretentious about reading books contrasting it with the stupidity of oral communication, but books are just a way to keep down people speaking monologues at you on pages. I realized this with audiobooks, because listening to an audiobook is in a certain sense identical to a real life storyteller in an oral tradition if it is narrative. Your parietal cortex reconstructs a geometrical space of some sort. Your prefrontal cortex is the peak of this predictive coding hierarchy, it suspends and deals with judgement, and it inhibits behavior, orienting it instead towards a long term strategic planning of behavior with goals and behavior over long spans of time. There is nothing of the human besides the brain. And the brain is this. What a human is is revealed by the muscular impulses of their brains given certain conditions. It is not exhaustively what being a human is, but it can pretty much be taken as a revelation of it. You are what you do. Basically literally. The World War 2 and gulags have revealed humanity to be monsters. Rapists, torturers, traitors, scammers, and murderers reveal the depth of human rot in each man. But benevolent acts reveal the graceful good in each man as well. Or it would be, but what causes the overlap across persistent behavior arising life circumstance within the larger world is inherited and distributed normally. What one is are one's genes which manifest in the world by these such behaviors. Limited by the limitations and affordances of one's environment behavior, of course. Genius is wasted in a jungle. The fundamental structure of these overlaps at the deepest latent variable level are plasticity, stability, and IQ. IQ is just brain fitness, it is as if inheriting immune system strength, so it is not as vital. Plasticity is governed by dopamine and stability is governed by serotonin. Serotonin strengthens circadian rhythms and increases resistance to distractions, decreases aggressive impulses. Plasticity is the extent of engagement with the world and information in it. So yeah, we do know how the brain works, no need to mystify it. :D

imagine a) writing a thesis in the comments on a gag i did and b) missing what i was saying. i did read all of this and yes its all correct but also my point was more science continually is advancing and we update our models. the split brain experiment still has discourse about it but sometimes we do shit we can't explain and that's just how it is. saying you just completely understand it is a crapshoot cause its far easier to prove yourself wrong than right then. despite what i just said but these are all correct deeper explanations than i put in (every comment that is still there besides the one that both you and i know i would remove) and i just didn't put in for the sake of you know, making a video that isn't needlessly long winded and is understandable (yeah i simplified Gnosticism but i wasn't about to go down the path of "oh yeah jesus was the serpent" cause that's a whole can of worms i didn't need to touch). it woulda taken a real long time to write this shit so commend you for that but if you gotta problem with it maybe make your own video on it instead of typing this out in a comment section where only i and a handful of others would even see it lmao.
