Just be careful putting the memory card in. The pins are actually really fragile in the card slot. It's better to leave the card in and use a USB cable to transfer your photos.

I would think lightroom would have an automatic distortion correction available for that lens. I know it has it for the lenses I use on my Canon and it corrects distortion and vignetting.

I took up photography late, but got an old D200 and found it to be perfect to learn the fundamentals on. I still use mine and recommend it for new photographers. It struggles in poor light, but the colors are outstanding and it makes it easy for newcomers to really learn about Aperture/Shutter/ISO when taking pictures. Also, I'm a firm believer that the better lenses matter most, and with the autofocus motor in the D200, people can pick up very cheap pro level AF and AF-D lenses.. not to mention using the old AI and AIS manual focus lenses

My favorite Canon EF lens for the 5D is the EF 85mm F1.8 USM. The size / weight of that lens on the 5D body is absolutely perfect, feels incredibly natural. Focuses super fast, sharp images, and a beautiful rendering that makes the shots look as if they were sketched by an artist. (Versus the hyper-real rendering of the L lenses, or the Leica-look of the Sigma ART). My absolute favorite (non-Canon) EF lens is the Sigma ART 35mm F1.4. Razor sharp, and not just the center point is sharp but all focus points work with this lens, even at F1.4! It practically gives the 5D night vision (compared to F1.8 lenses). It's not just that it can capture more light, but has a fraction of the high ISO noise, its ISO 3200 shots are way cleaner, sharper and significantly lower noise than the ISO1600 shots with the Canon F1.8 EF lenses. Also, it focuses super fast even in low light, provided you want it to focus on something that has some contrast to it. (It will take its time to focus on a blurry hazy near black gray spot.) The Sigma lens makes the 5D feel as if it was a 5-10 years newer camera, with way, way upgraded autofocus and a sensor with much lower noise floor.

It's a great camera and the raw files are very easy to make into great images. I don't agree about the viewfinder though. Although it might be better than some other apsc dslrs it's still pretty small compared to a full frame viewfinder. Great image quality but, as you say, you ideally don't want to go above 800ISO.

Interesting comparison. I think the D700 has a bit of a smoother transition between light and dark parts (e.g. 3:05, 4:50) and it obviously knocks it out of the park when it comes to ISO. Would be cool to see a similar comparison but with compacts. 😁

Hi Mikael , Nice comparison. If you have the 35mm 1.8 DX try it on D700 in FX mode (DX crop OFF ) you will be surprised with results . You get perfectly usable images from f2 to f4 with slight vignetting. I have both the cameras, the D700 was bought last week and the D200 about a year back. While i agree the D700 is a better camera overall. But i like the mechanical shutter sound and feel of the D200. Also i find the D700 back LCD screen on the bluish side. Both are excellent cameras to use if you know their limitations and weaknesses. I don't think i will ever part with these two cameras.

My theory about the current CCD hype is how cameras of that era interpreted colors for SOOC JPGs, which is an instant starting point for that 'film-like' vibe. Personally, I don't think it looks like film at all, but it's still very pleasing for persona work. 😊Also new tech is so sterile and expensive, it's exciting to think that there are multiple system out there for everyone, at a fraction of what the cost of what it was then & now.
@mikaelrphoto
@mikaelrphoto 11 күн бұрын
I was quite confused when I first saw comparisons between film and early digital - I started shooting film, around 2009 or so, because I couldn't get a "film-look" from cameras that now get praised for having a "film-look". I guess my definition of a "film-look" was quite different from the popular definition today. Well, anyway, I agree that new cameras can give very sterile results, these old cameras can give very interesting results!
@ccderik
@ccderik 9 күн бұрын
I believe "film-like" has become an over-used cliché phrase (I use it myself, haha) and rather means "unique" or just old-school in any way. I remember using my first digital, the Canon Powershot A80, which felt oh so digital. 😅 Agree, it's more about re-discovering fun and still cabable cameras. While less perfect, they have more personality than new cameras.

More photos from both cameras on my Flickr: flickr.com/mikaelrphoto/ Raw files can be found on my Patreon: www.patreon.com/posts/108052640 About the methodology: Cameras set to RAW + JPEG (standard) -> Same scene shot with same settings -> D700 RAW-file edited to my liking -> Settings copied to the D200 RAW-file -> Export as JPEG -> (Video compiled in Davinci Resolve in 4K) The reason for this methodology is to test the cameras in a way I would actually use them, by taking photos in the field and edit them how I would normally. (There was a difference in the D200 output from the D700, which I had to compensate with 2/3 exposure increase on the D200 files. I’m not sure why this happened, but it didn’t cause any problem for editing the files. The RAW files are very flexible from both cameras.)

Hello friend, how are you? Thank you very much for sharing your experience. I'm an amateur photographer and I've never really been obsessed with cameras or lenses. I haven't needed the best, the latest or the most expensive. Several years ago, long before this digicam "fever" started, I became very interested in the old digital photographic technology, because I wanted to side with its weaknesses. For photos that resemble reality, I already have my main camera, but I love the possibility that photography offers me to explore "other realities" thanks to its interpretations (slowness, noise, blurs, errors, etc.). At that time I acquired a Canon G2, Fujifilm F30, Canon S70, Sony DSC S75. Now I was looking at small digicams, like for example the Ixus 70 and the Ixus 100 IS, however what you said in the video about the ixus 70 applying noise reduction, I didn't like at all. I want noise and everything that gives character to photography. The Canon G2, for example, is a camera that I like what it offers me, but I would like to get something similar but in the size of the Ixus. I have also looked at Ixus 40, Ixus 50, Ixus 800 IS, which, being even older, may not apply noise reduction. I don't want noise reduction or a digital look to the image. Any recommendations 🙂 ?

Hello, I'm doing good, thanks! How are you? The later Canon S-series are not so much larger than the Ixus-series. For example the S90, S95, but the problem with these is that they have been hyped and the prices are unrealistic now (they can easily break, it's common for the lenses to get stuck). I'm mostly using more advanced cameras for getting interesting high-ISO noise, for example the Canon Pro1 and G7, but of course they are large compacts. I don't use that many small compacts even though I have a lot of them, from many different brands. I think I will do some more tests because I'm also interested in finding smaller cameras with interesting noise! Thanks for watching!

Hello my friend. Thank you very much for your answer and help. The thing is that I have continued analyzing and I have found an option that I think may be interesting, it is specifically the IXUS 400 (Powershot S400 in USA). It turns out that it has the same sensor and processor as the Canon Powershot G2 and G3... These 2 cameras are very popular among digicam fans, because of their similarity in colours and even noise/grain with analogue photography. It makes sense, because being cameras from the beginning of the century, they are closer to their analogue counterparts. Of course, the Ixus doesn't have RAW or manual controls like the G2 and G3 do, but I think that for a point and shoot it's fine. If you want more info about the Ixus 400 there is a very complete review in dpreview, where they even compare it with the G3 and it wasn't left behind, considering that it was a very advanced camera at the time. Will there be better and more perfect cameras? Sure there will be, but in the end photography is a language and each camera can be like a language, depending on what each one needs 😊. It's nice to share with other people with common interests. Hugs from the Mediterranean coast 🤗

Had this same problem. The workaround I found: After shooting, put the mirror down, THEN advance the film, then put the mirror back up for your next shot. For some reason the shutter will re-cock if the mirror is down. Now I've got myself trained to just put the mirror down as part of the film advance process. Can't wait to try this fix!!!

Dating from 1964, the Uni was one of the last cameras in the form of a 35mm SLR using a leaf shutter and interchangeable lenses. This style originated with Zeiss Contaflex, Voigtlander Bessa and Kodak Retina models in the 1950s, but by the time the Uni arrived, its concept was dead on arrival, and the big makers were closing out production of their similar cameras.The camera operation was too mechanically complex. The leaf shutter greatly limited the optical design of lenses which could be used, and lens quality was not that good as a result. Canon launch a similar late-comer model like the Uni, and suffered the same lack of buyer interest. So, why did Topcon make the Uni? They were able to incorporate auto exposure with their trademark TTL metering system, hoping that the innovation would mark the wave of the future. Well, it did. Just not for Topcon. Don't buy a Uni today as anything but a novelty. 60 years later, their unreliable nature when new has ripened into a disappointment waiting to happen..

Is it worth buying in 2024? How much should it cost and should you pay attention to the mileage of the camera? What do you think - what is the maximum mileage it should be? And what lens would be the most universal at a low price, so that it could zoom several times? Maybe there are some other suggestions worth considering? I'm looking for a used camera for $250-400 and I'm wondering whether an older FULLFRAME or a newer APS-C one is better.
@mikaelrphoto
@mikaelrphoto 29 күн бұрын
Newer aps-c are generally better, among other things they have more advanced sensors (CMOS-BSI). The biggest limitation of the D700 is the 12mp resolution, but it can still plenty enough for many purposes. Anything under 100k shots should be fine, avoid cameras that have been in professional use (unless you can get them for very cheap). Around 300 euros for a ~50k one would be a good price. When it comes to lenses, any Nikkor lens with a stabilizer should be fine (with only 12mp it doesn't need super sharp lenses). Older AF & AF-D era lenses are also fine and can be found for very cheap.
