Hello! Thank you for sharing this video. I would like to ask where to order chemistry reagents like this in the Philippines for our biochem lab. Thank you! I would really appreciate your response.

Hi! Our laboratory custodian/manager is actually the one ordering the reagents for our classes every semester or every year. So I have no idea. But there are several distributors which you can search online.

I recommend wearing PPE. A week ago, accidental drops of Molisch test splashed on my arm had the exposed area itch, which made lesions overtime. It wasn't that severe so I didn't tell my instructor ;> Until now, the burnt patches are still there :<

As a lab scientist and educator, this is very informative and helpful especially to the students.... But after going through your other videos, I have observed that you are not practicing lab safety. Please wear lab gown and gloves when doing your experiments and set a better example to your subscribers/viewers.

Hello thank you for this insight. Laboratory gown is worn in the whole duration of this video. Rest assured that gloves will be worn next time. This was done in a hurry at the onset of the pandemic for the benefit of our students. It was a fault on our end to forget the wearing of gloves.

sucrose is a non-reducing sugar so it shouldnt react with benedicts test right? if thats the case why was there a color change does that mean there was an error in the experiment?
@candidranger9110
@candidranger9110 Жыл бұрын
It was lactose that has got a color change. I guess the same principle applies just like in barfoed's test wherein disaccharides would form precipitate after more than 3 minutes (compared to monosaccharides which only for about >3 mins). I'm not claiming this is true, it's just a hypothesis Edit: I realized sucrose didn't have a color change. Guess I have to agree with u

Would starch give positive results in Molisch test? Why?
@violaramos5587
@violaramos5587 2 жыл бұрын
Any carbohydrate will give a positive result in Molisch test since it is a general test for carbohydrates. Although the reaction would be slower as compared with monosaccharides and disaccharides.
@candidranger9110
@candidranger9110 Жыл бұрын
upon a few drops of sulfuric acid, the starch will be converted and will form furfural (or its derivatives). this furfural will then act with the alpha naphtol present in the molisch's reagent, which would consequently form a dark purple ring. this is true to the presence of any carbohydrate in a solution, hence described as the general test for carbohydrates.

Correction: Oligosaccharides is 3-9, Disaccharides is 2.
@violaramos5587

Disaccharides are a specific type of oligosaccharides. There are many important disaccharides that’s why in most books there is a separate section for them. But they are examples under the oligosaccharides classification. ☺️
