Hopefully, I can make this apply to a 5 speed Ram 50, with no RPM gauge. 🙂

And If you value your clutch brake, don’t coast to a stop and then find a gear, keep it in a gear at all times…. So let it almost come to a stop and float it into first and don’t depress your clutch pedal to the floor every time you stop, stay out of the clutch brake. There’s so much unnecessary clutch brake wear from people being lazy and it won’t matter until you can no longer get the input shaft on the tranny to quit spinning to get it into gear..

Do you use the clutch on the first gear at all ..?
@lancearchibald64994 ай бұрын
A lot easier than people think. I drive an old ford water truck at the construction site I work at which is a 5 speed manual with a gear splitter so it’s technically a 10 speed. I jjst played around with what rpm’s I should shift at to float the gears and combined with the fact that I realized I had an extra 5 gears made it so much easier to shift smoothly. Never went to a cdl school or anything I just picked it up within a day or 2 and I rarely look at the rpm gauge when shifting.

I'm new to American manuals, European 18 speeds are syncromesh so you just clutch in, shift, clutch out same as a car. I've mostly got the hang of it after a few weeks in my first proper job driving 18 speed manuals after 8 years on automatics. I don't find double clutching works well for me, plus I have no instruction, floating works better and is smoother and can do it mostly without grinding any fears (touching the face of the gear in your explanation). People say it's easier to shift loaded but I'm on Super B's so the truck weighs 140,000lbs fully loaded, shifting when loaded up is much more difficult. Seeing you not just slot every gear into place every time though makes me feel much better about my shifting. The only issue I have in my box is the shift from 5th to 6th (18 speed), it is the only gear that doesn't seem to come out easily when you let off the throttle, so it requires a bit of a push and I don't know why.

I went through CDL school and they teach you to double clutch. I accidentally floated gears by accident and it felt way nicer then double clutching. I would love to be able to practice this, but all the trucks at my starting company are automatics.
@Ron-j3t7 ай бұрын
Who cares if you press the cluch or not it'll grind and bang all day if you don't match speeds. Just because every transmission manufacturer says to use it, know why, cause when you get it wrong you're not going against the engine as well.

Very nice. I'm curious, when you did the doors, did you have to drill the rivets out of the tubular steel door frame? If so, were you able to get the scrap rivets out? Or did you live with them having to stay in the frame?
@seraleelee8 ай бұрын
@@carlylea Hi, yes I drilled them out, and yes most of the stubs ended up inside chromoly tubes, but there are drain holes at bottom of my tubes, and with some time and effort I was able to shake them all down and out of the drain holes.

Around 1:48 you mention being at 2000rpm and your next gear is at 1500rpm, how do you know what rpm each gear is supposed to be at? Or is there a chart? (Beyond just practice, memory, and engine feel?) Also does this strategy hold the for car and pickup manual transmission?
@carlylea8 ай бұрын
Just to be clear, that is a rough number. That being said, eaton fuller (transmission manufacture) did a good job of spacing out the gears on the 10 speed transmission. With this, each shift is a very consistent change in ratio - which relates to around 2000 to 1500 when shifting up. Although I don't know (or have experience with) the car or pickup that you're talking about, the same concept should apply. You will have to drive the vehicle to figure out the ratios. I do not recommend shifting a car or light truck without a clutch, as that transmission was not designed the same way.

It really is almost impossible to verbally explain to someone how to do this. It's all about feel in my opinion.
@au131710 ай бұрын
I tried to explain this to my dad who's only ever owned manual cars his whole life, 50+ years. He couldn't wrap his head around it and didn't believe it was possible. I eventually showed him in his Tacoma and he was flabbergasted lol. He didn't even know what to say. Something that helped me is you've gotta think about how the drivetrain is being loaded. When the engine is torqueing the drivetrain either accelerating or engine braking, it's not gonna want to pop in or out. You've got to hit that sweet spot where it's relatively neutral load. That might explain why it's harder at higher RPM due to the smaller window before it starts engine braking Love your clutch... pedal? stick? Lol great vid

Huh, pretty similar with the sequential gears on motorcycles. The only difference is that you want to use the clutch from 1st to 2nd because it’s such a steep jump, with neutral in between. I kinda wish neutral was like a sideways push instead of an up/down. I seem to rev-bomb in neutral a little too often when taking off. Always when some little old lady is crossing the road next to me, SMH…
