I'm so happy Somone cares about saving great pipe organs.. my grandparents bought a 1952 moller organ for our church back in 52. As a memorial to my uncle . In 1996 it was replaced for a new organ..what upset me was it wasn't cared for ..so I didn't support a new one..or donate to a replacement..smaller one. Maintenance is key ..and we had money to releather it.. and my family was going to fund most of the project. I've since left and retired to Florida..

Too much distortion in the St.Thomas recording for me to render an opinion regarding the Dobson organ - checked with other KZbin recordings of other organs to see whether the distortion is because of my playback equipment but other recordings are much better quality. Kenneth Leighton is a favorite rather modern composer, have CDs of all of his organ compositions with an especially stunning one of some of his works played on the impressive Walker-plus Wood organ at Blackburn Cathedral. The St. Thomas Filsell's rendering of the Ite missa of Missa de Gloria is rather spectacular and his improv. on the Welsh hymn tune Llanfair is imaginative and certainly evokes the Easter hymn with which it is associated in many hymnals, recalling the glory and victory of Jesus's resurrection.

Reheard this recording with much less distortion. I have a number of CDs with Gerre Hancock and Todd Wilson playing the prior Aeolian - Skinner organ. Somewhat difficult to judge the current Dobson organ on the basis of two pieces of music but preliminarily I would have preferred that the Aeolian - Skinner pipework would have been reused in its entirety in a reconstructed instrument as their tonal qualities and colors were more varied and interesting to hear. Hancock's registrations made full use of that organ's capabilities, as did Wilson's.

There is a historic organ at St. Peter's on West 20th and it is begging for restoration. But no, you'll stick with the rich ones. The big ones. I wonder what you're missing. Oh, yes, when the population started to move uptown, the rich went east. The poor came to Chelsea. And to St. Peter's, which served them, refusing to move uptown but to stay with the people who moved into the neighborhood. Boy, you are missing some treasures.

Why can't organists playing on American organs add a reed or two to their full diapaison chorus registration to get a Grand Choeur sound for French Romantic pieces?

It may be the typical lack of American Acoustic but he takes this too fast to cover the lack of reverberation. He is a good Organist but should play the French reptoir on a French Organ in a French Cathedral.....as I am sure he has....once.

Oh shit. I thought I'd turned into a performance of organ music from the 19 th to early 20. My fault. Forgive your sister. Your mother had her chance. Your father failed. Now what are you going to make me listen to. Your mantra: "Too late!" For god sake................. listen to Ethel Smith playing Tico Tico.

The piece at 32:28 acquires more colour if played with more "temps inegale" - double quavers near to dotted on the first and a semiquaver for the second. A lilt results as in an elegant formal dance. It's not an affectation to play it in such a way. Look for recordings by Pierre Bardon and Philippe Bardon.

Very elegant playing. Of course the commentator about temperament is right but certainly the stop combinations here are giving a hint towards the flavour to be experienced even if the colour isn't a perfect match.
@joshhamilton3730

Unfortunately, the Cornet (and consequently the tierce en taille and jeu de tierce) will never achieve the same effect on a modern organ due to equal temperament. You can hear here how the tierce ranks' pure 3rd beat very dissonantly against the tempered 3rds when a major 3rd is played. Historic organs in France used meantone temperament until very late in the 18th century. The tierce played on these has a completely different sound, highly colourful but sweet as it resonates with the fonds due to the eight pure 3rds.

OMG!! I am so glad to see this. I have known John for 45 years. When I saw that Roosevelt at All Saints, Harlem, I was thrilled. I have played this organ several times. Stunning building, stunning organ, with one of the best 32' Contre Bombardes I have ever played. The 16' Great Principal Chorus is astonishing. Perhaps 2 or 3 very large mixtures, and some big reeds. One of the most important organs ever built in NYC. I hope it goes to a very large Gothic style room (with a huge acoustic!) somewhere in the US or Europe. The criminal clergy who work at 1011 First Avenue (the Archdiocesan offices) who closed this magnificent church should go to jail. Worthless thugs.

This type of music and this type of "non-acoustic" are like mixing oil and water. I.e., they don't go together in any way. Waste of time to play such music in this kind of environment.

Dear Dr. Henderson, you certainly made sing your organ the French way! Foundation stops added to a reed stop serve two purposes: 1. as flue stops are stronger in the treble than they are in the bass, they compensate for the reeds which tend to sound softer in the treble (just like you said while explaining the Grand Jeu). This effect is much more dramatic on our historical organs in Belgium and France. 2. To add harmonics, or better: reinforce them, in order to enrich the reed sound without changing its character. Prestant and bourdon pipes have differents properties when it comes to harmonics; that's why adding a bourdon 8 and a prestant 4 works so wonderfully. On a tracker organ I would play duos at quite a good clip. Your electric action reacts noticably slowly, so I do appreciate you wisely have choosen for a lower pace. All the best and cheerio from Belgium, Willem

This organ has a sound, either loud,soft or in between, that sets it apart from all other organs in the world. This organ,which is two thirds the size of the organs housed in Riverside and St.Barts, shows that "size" doesn't determine the quality or sound of an organ.
