I wish to share this with you Joe. It is my tribute to a Lyle, but I also spent some time to work on Metheny’s work on this tune too. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZ-zlYOsjZmKa68si=4JRHaIjuVVN3wt-_

What a talent. Stockwell and Bob James off the Better album are outstanding. A talent that is sadly marred by one of the worst cases of Trump Derangement Syndrome of all time. He is absolutely obsessed with it.

He asked about the drummer….and his name is Jimmy Branly. He really made Lyle happy about this concert. The perfect drummer for Lyle’s music.

It IS SO cool the ending, Mays digging it to the max. Absolutely love to see him that way - satisfied w/ the take & acknowledging w/ admiration the other musicians' nailing the take.

This is pretty cool learning about LM's early days. Also informative answering questions I've always had like why did LM stop touring and getting a sense of how truly brilliant a mind he had. Possibly genius. Between this video and a Richard Niles interview with Mark Egan just after LM's passing I have the sense of a gentle, courteous, curious, introspective kind renaissance man who just happened to be supremely talented. The cumulative effect is a deeper appreciation of LM the man. I was thrilled to learn he was fascinated by architecture, my profession. I'm saddened at the thought that a most remarkable man is no longer with us. I truly wish someone with the requisite talent will write and record a September 15th for Lyle Mays.

Joe I just discovered these videos on Lyle . They were absolutely amazing ! I am from montreal and had met Lyle and Paul Wertico way back in the mid 80’s . I was working at a local railway museum outside Montreal and had run into Paul And Lyle there on their day off after a couple of nights in Montreal . They were both into trains and we spent half a day having a blast hanging out at the museum together . We stayed friends for years after and I was at that last show in Montreal of the way up tour . I hadn’t realized that was Lyles very last tour gig with the full PMG band . I did talk to Lyle backstage a few hours before the show and I distinctly remember he had a white tshirt on with a red Lego on it . I asked him about the shirt and he said to me hey you should see the trains you can make out of Lego these days . Sadly that was my last encounter with Lyle , but was very happy to have spent time with him over the years . Cheers and thanks again for these great videos . I learned a lot of new things 👍🏻

I suspected long ago and then realized, and decided, the enduring attraction to Metheny for me was the PMG catalog…and that was because of Lyle Mays…I then decided Lyle was/is the PMG..that time and the music produced by Lyle, Metheny and Pedro Aznar, for me, will always be just about the very best I have enjoyed. Lyles’ ear and mind, his approach… (as I write I hear Lyle talking about wanting to put structure in the improvisation sure that’s it..what he did..classic improv..wow) From listening to PMG over the many years, I have been educated by both Pat and Lyles compositional approach/ form.. especially Lyle Mays view on chord/key choices and improv construction( My ear and thinking have been changed and reformed by Lyle Mays…can’t beat that! Don’t know him, but he has profoundly impacted my mind and my life…go figure! Thank you for the video, and thank god for the soul that is/ was Lyle Mays!

I just discovered this thread about Lyle today and watched both videos- I want to extend a thanks to Joe Anderies for taking the time to produce and share these moments he had with Lyle Mays. I discovered PMG in 1985 and attended the First Circle tour show in Austin Tx at the PAC. It was my first "jazz" concert and I left that venue in total awe. I have been the biggest fan ever since and have become so influenced by both PM and LM. Hearing about the loss of Lyle really hurt so deep- I am self taught musician, his influence and genius has inspired me so much, I am grateful I had the privilege of seeing him preform on the First Circle, Letter From Home and Imaginary Day shows. There will never be another one like him, so honored to have his music and hear these stories! Thank you <3 `JP

Hey Joe~ Thanks for these Lyle stories, I knew Lyle. I attended NTSU School of Music in those days (but I don't recall making your acquaintance) and Lyle, Pat, Bob Belden were all pals. OMG! What levels of musicianship!!! Thanks dude. Godspeed Lyle Mays.

Hi, Joe. I guess the KZbin lords decided to cancel out any audio near the beginning of this video, and I'm totally blind, so I couldn't read anything posted from those gaps of sound onscreen. Can all this be found at Lyle's website? I use screen reading software that speaks what's typed onscreen, but it has to be text. If it's hidden within the images from the video, I can't pick it up, because it's a picture. I've always been so fascinated by Lyle and always wanted to get to know more about him, and I've been listening to Pat's music since 1978. My first experience listening to an interview with Pat wasn't until 1982, and I went from being acquainted with his and Lyle's music to blown away by their music and Pat's genuine good nature as a musician and a human being which I'm sure Lyle was, too. They were unique, and yet, they seemed to work together so nicely. If you have any suggestions or ideas, please let me know. I was hit hard by the news of Lyle's passing, and I'm sure Pat was too.

I have seen him twice in a trio setting and he was really experience that was like no other I haver ever seen in concert. Most of the audience did not get his music.A true musicians musician. Thank you for this interview.
