Looks great, what language are you speaking to the dog?
@Dogtrainingpsychology5 ай бұрын
I usually speak in Japanese or sometimes in made-up words like "Zotz!" It's easy for a dog to respond to unique words rather than words she may hear in everyday conversation. Sometimes I use a combination of English with Japanese or other foreign words.

very creative!! So what exactly is the book about? Einstein?
@Dogtrainingpsychology5 ай бұрын
I take aphorisms by visionaries like Einstein and expand upon them. Also, lately I am writing songs based on those aphorisms. An aphorism is a great truth and if followed helps us improve our life.

Wow 1978..I did agility with my first Border Collie back in1994 and it was new to us- I can't believe it had been around for 16 years already - my 2nd Border Collie was amazing and if it wasn't for my disability she could have been one of the greats (she had world championship Gene - both parents were from Wales and were brought across to Canada)- she learned so fast and came in first in pretty much every run she ever did...she died aged 14 this past April... My new puppy, a toy Aussiedoodle is a super fast little guy and at age 5 months is great at the dog walk, the pause box and the tunnel - he will make an amazing jumper too since it appears he is part kangaroo...but my body has gotten worse over the years and taking him to a 1 hr basic obedience class is hard on me now so I don't think agility trials are in our future- which is such a shame (I wish one of the boys, well young men now, were interested in competing but I think girls are too important at the moment

Cathy, your Border Collies sound amazing! if you learn how to teach your dog Directionality, you don't need to be able to run. Some handlers in NADAC trials stand in one place and can cue their dog to run around a course following verbal cues. You may want to learn clicker training: See this free lesson: www.dogtrainingpsychology.com/clicker-training-exposed

I think this was a fairly good video. And kudos to you for using an untrained dog--I hate the "how to" videos that use a demonstration dog who already is familiar with the task. Two things, though: NEVER use a plastic bag (I've attended surgeries removing them), and I would NOT put a treat on the board. The dog is "paid" when the task is complete. You can lure along with a moving hand, but the food should not be released until the dog is off the board. Otherwise, you might get a dog who hesitates partway through, looking for or anticipating food. Seconds count--keep the animal MOVING.
@Dogtrainingpsychology4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. This link shows how Momo nailed the teeter in USDAA Grand Prix trial: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYuoont5h7iiorc I guess the method worked for her. Thanks for the warning about the plastic bag. However, Momo has been trained to release anything on cue so that was not an issue for her. As far as putting food on the board, it worked great for Momo and many other trainers use luring in this way. One can always switch to reinforcement (and should switch) once the behavior is established.

In his book , which I am reading on Kindle, " Dog Agility Escapades with Magic Momo: The Struggles of a Shy Sheltie in the sport of dog agility (Volume Book 1) Kindle Edition" the author asks "What do you think? " in regards to were they"robbed" of a Qualifying round? In this video Philip goes to the left of the poles to start Momo. Often Novice dogs are started with the handler with the dog on their left making it easier for a novice dog to find the correct entry. Philip took the harder entry handling position and Momo, first tried to follow after him, not realizing she needed to weave. He re-cued her and she entered properly. She did indeed do the correct weave entry. But the judge was in the wrong place to watch the weaves. She should have moved back behind the weave set so she could see the entry and exit. Which she could have seen from her position if Philip had been on right side of the weaves. Instead his body blocked the judge from seeing the weave entry and she did not reposition herself. And by not moving she apparently didn't see the weave exit either. Or if she did she did not realize that for Momo to exit correctly she had to have either missed a pole (which she did not, or she had to have entered correctly (which she did) . Momo came out of the weaves on her left - correctly. You can see the judge counting with her fingers. No idea what she was doing this for but she concluded that, though she did not see it, Momo made a mistake. Hopefully this video will be used as a training tool for judges to realize how important that their placement is and that even in Novice a handler might go to the left of the entry so they need to position themselves for that eventuality.
@furrygodmother51994 жыл бұрын
In addition, if the AKC has not by now, they need to change their policy that a judging decision cannot be changed after viewing a video. This is especially important for contacts. It is costly, time consuming and stressful to enter and compete in trials. When the dog does well but is robbed of their Q it is not fair. Sometimes the reverse can work in a handler's favor when the judge misses a minor mistake. No matter what, though, as Phillip points out, the dog has no idea about any of this stress- it is all the human. Keeping the dog's confidence up, no matter what is the most important skill.

Thanks for your detailed reply. 😁 This was my first ever dog agility trial and Momo did a great job although our handling of the weave poles could definitely have been improved. Since then Momo has gone on to win many blue ribbons in both AKC, USDAA, and UKI agility trials. Wow. What beautiful gardens. And Momo is delightful! For anyone who comes across this without knowing who Momo is you MUST read her book (go to the link above or Amazon like I did). And if you are just starting out in agility this is a good run to learn from. Much goes right here and the few little things that need improved on are very instructional for us newbies. Always study your course so you know which side to be on for your first turn. If the handler was on his left before he cued Momo to start, he would not have had to do a blind cross behind Momo when she was on the teeter. I too did this once and my dog came off the teeter. Momo almost did but it ended well. He turned into her at the end of her weaves which might slow some dogs down if they anticipate that in the future. I learned over time to play with my dog while running straight ahead so she did not anticipate slowing down after the weaves. What is most important in watching this video is to see the joy that both handler and Momo have for this run. I'm going through the book now and looking forward to all the videos!

This was filmed with a Soloshot robot camera, which I think is doing a fair job of tracking me here. I edited the video with Camtasia Studio. Slow motion worked well. I am still learning to use the Soloshot. Sometimes it does not seem to follow me. But I had the tag in my pocket instead of wearing it on a belt like I am supposed to. (Target for improvement: REMEMBER TO BRING THE BELT.)
