5:18 ''A normal 16 year old kid carted off to Ireland...'' What for.. a holiday? You can say it; he was carted off as a slave to Ulster. And 'a normal 16 year old kid' back 1300 years ago was actually middle aged !

The british, in common with many other failed imperial powers, find it impossible (at present) to face their reduction to their true status in world affairs. Perhaps in a few centuries, when the sun has set forever on their murderous greed and power lust, they can learn who and what they are.

Watch therefore, I beg you, Pope, watch, and again I say, watch; since perhaps Vigilius was not very vigilant, whom our friends, who lay blame on you, describe as the main stumbling-block. Watch first for the Faith, then for bidding works of faith and for spurning vices, since your watchfulness will be the salvation of many, just as on the other side your carelessness will be the destruction of many. May Isaiah send you to the mountain, who publish good tidings to Zion’’ Letters of Columbanus

Thanks John, I love Cahill's book by that name but, after speaking to the top medieval scholars, I chose to be a bit more circumspect. I think episode 3 or 4 has more to say on the subject, the book more so. But either way, it is an awesome story to needs to be better understood. God bless the wonderful Irish! @HenryVynerBrooks
@HenryVynerBrooks 5 күн бұрын
Hi David, not quite sure what you mean about Henry is and Rome. I suppose we could say that forms of pagan practice persisted in every culture, even in certain shades of Christian history. CSLewis made a few sialiant points regarding this. First is that paganism is a step up from materialistic atheism, and second, that God used/inspired currents within pagan thought and imagery to prep them for 'the true myth' ie the fulfillment of the dying/rising God etc. It was a major link in his own Christian conversion. Tolkien called is mythopoea. I noticed some stunning instances of this in the Saving Europe book that I must have pinched from Thomas Cahill's 'How the Irish saved civilization ' . Anyway, hope that helps a bit, and thanks for watching. Best regards Henry, (from Saving Europe)

Actually Ireland had already had Christianity well before Patrick. Egyptian Coptic desert fathers had been in Ireland decades previously. Patrick wrote about these Christians. By the way check out Brrhon laws and how Ireland was civilly organised. Women had equal and in certain scenarios superior rights to men that arrived in the rest of Europe GB and the European mainland in the 20th centuries.

Thanks Mark, that is true, it was before so forgive me having to paint with such a broad brush for the documentary. I did give more detail in the book...but even then the sources are not totally clear.
