Thanks for the video but I’d like to hear it simplified with pickup up selection back to back. To be honest I don’t think either guitar maker are geniuses. Their predecessors were the true geniuses ie Leo and Les, Huis and McCarty. The Smith & Suhr just improved on the original designs without amazing gains. That said, I think the PRS sounds thicker which is more favourable to my ears.

Sadly I don’t own either guitar anymore so I can’t re do the pickup demos. I do agree with what you say to a point however innovation has to build upon the previous technology so PRS/Suhr etc have imo added significant progress in the guitar’s evolution which unlike many others, Parker for example have out lasted their competition! It’s a fine balance between paying homage to the og’s and bringing something unique as I think most guitar players still want much of what the Strat, Tele and Les Paul have to offer.

Im interested in that guitar but the only thing that I’m not keen on are pickups. On all videos I saw they sound weak and dark with higain. Anyone tried changing pickups on those for something with more output?
@MattsGAP
@MattsGAP 2 ай бұрын
I don’t know whether anyone can answer that question for you. I can say though the guitar is beautifully built and I do agree about the pickups. I was tempted to switch out the pickups to Bareknuckle Mules but in the end I decided to sell it as I felt I would prefer a Les Paul overall and they’re more or less what the FGN would end up being like if I put Mules in it. Perhaps ask yourself whether buying a different guitar that’s already loaded with your favourite pups is a more suitable proposition or whether you’re happy with the extra expense and uncertainty of swapping out the FGNs pickups. I purchased my Expert for a lot less than they cost now and I was happy to sell it for what I paid new, which don’t think is possible anymore making it a potentially expensive gamble if you switch them out and don’t like the result. Plus the pickups were hard to access as there wasn’t much spare wiring around the switch etc so it might be easier to remove all the wiring and drop in a whole new loom. Thanks for watching hope you get what you’re looking for!!

Hey, love the video. I just got an Ibanez AZ and mine just feels stiff and hard to play but when I lower the action I fret out. How did you strike that balance?
@MattsGAP
@MattsGAP 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment! I’m guessing your trem is screwed down to the body? If so then raising the posts will allow the trem to float slightly which will make it feel less stiff. Also an over tight truss rod can have that effect. The obvious one is go to a lighter gauge string, but tbh some guitars just feel like that! My Suhr felt stiff as did my EJ Strat both were improved by floating the trem a little and loosening the truss rod by a tiny amount to add relief to the neck. Hope some of that is helpful, thanks for watching! Oh and maybe if it has 4 springs take one out or you can get springs with less tension for a lighter feeling flutter on the trem

I own this model/colour and agree with you on the Custom Shop quality. The neck especially, is just stellar feeling and rock solid. The nut is just and shaped absolutely perfectly. One additional Eric Johnson personal spec not mentioned is the middle pickup position has no tone control at all. Eric spec'd neck tone and bridge tone control only (no overlap to cover the middle pickup). Also, I understand that Eric lowers the middle pickup on all his guitars so it doesn't interfere with his picking. I don't know if his proprietary pickups here take that into account or not in terms of volume (i.e a hotter middle pickup to compensate).

Coming from a songwriter and an engineer/producer, the American pro ii was actually a metal machine in disguise. When we talk about pumping ridiculous amounts of gain, there’s already so much compression that comes naturally along with noise, gating is a must either way. But when we’re talking about making that high gain metal ACTUALLY lay in the mix, it’s very complimenting to say the least. With standard humbuckers across the board, you have to back off the gain or boost it through the pre amp and do a lot of low cuts. I never bought it thinking it would be the best all around-er that it turned out to be. Definitely love my new pro ii in dark night with rosewood. Keep making great content!

It’s very simple, loosen off the strings, use the correct allen wrench to raise the bridge posts enough to clear the body, tune it up, check the bridge is level, adjust springs in the back to balance the bridge so it’s flat, tune again, check action height of saddles and intonation. Just remember to loosen the strings every time you adjust any part of the bridge so you don’t strip the screws and be prepared for it to require finessing a little. Patience is key and play it for a while and readjust it when needed! Thanks for watching, there’s loads of guides on adjusting a two point bridge on KZbin and yeah it’s basically the same as a modern Strat bridge

I’d say that’s the profile I used and how it reacts with the pickups. Trouble with the kemper is every individual profile was made with a specific guitar by the person who profiled their amp and if you use a different kind of guitar than theirs it will affect the overall sound. In addition to that the AZ has so many different pickup configurations they also react to the profile in different ways. Unfortunately I cannot spend hours isolating the best profile for every pickup selection so some sound better than others, on the bright side, if you’re a kemper user you’ll get similar mismatching when changing pickups and profiles. If not then a normal amp should be more forgiving than the kemper. Thanks for watching!

Anyone know if this will fit the existing rout on an Aerodyne Stratocaster (Fender MIJ guardless Stratocaster) I have the SSS. Just poking around figuring out which reversible mods are possible, in my case reversible meaning without cutting up the body. I guess its a similar size to the 5 way but standard pick giard strats have a room in thier chamber. I suppose i also have to figure out how it mounts to the body from below and if it has the same switch arm length to pass through the wood as i have no idea how thick it is. Asking before i take it apart as its pretty new and im not ready, curiosity will get me eventually. Enjoying it now. But i always look forward to possibilities if i get bored and want to make it my own.
@MattsGAP
@MattsGAP Жыл бұрын
I suspect if there’s an issue it will be how deep the slot is on your Aerodyne. The switch needs room to move side to side it’s not a dramatic movement but I’d imagine if the slot is narrow and deep (thickness of wood) it could restrict travel. If you have access to a plastic pickguard you could measure the slot width and plastic depth and compare it to your guitar. My guess is they’ll be very similar and the Free-way would fit and function without issue, but as you have alluded, modifying the body is probably not a good idea, and would affect the resale value. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the reply! (Sorry about the typos, tiny window, didn't look back.) I need to get a small steel ruler and check but I think it's looking possible, with a flashlight I can see it's about an eighth to the metal on the top of the current switch assembly. It screws through the top to catch it and the slot is a heavy eighth. Just so they didn't use some low profile switch or something, I can't find a part number for a separate specific switch so am assuming they used the usual part. I didn't get around to pooping off the back plate yet but will as soon as I get some measuring tools. Thanks again, great channel.

@@zeusbardanca3897 Yes, to make it float, I removed 2 and 4 and raised the studs a bit to ensure it was free to move up and down.

Love my PRS cu 24-08, and recently picked up a custom standard with pete thorn pickups. Both fantastic. Suhr has one of the nicest and smoothest necks ive ever played.
