I use to ride a TNT 440 40 years ago in Northern Manitoba.Not sure what year it was,just knew it was abused.With a good tuneup this old girl would start in 2 pulls at -40 degrees. I installed an extra large windshield,with the hot air blowing off the engine,I was toasty warm.

The snowmobiling industry is fizzling in part because it no longer makes simple, fun machines like the Ski-doo Elan.

Imagine a long travel 1500cc supercharged 300hp fully enclosed version. As much as sleds cost these days, you should get something like that. The snow by side

It’s cool and all but snowmobiles in general handle like such crap compared to the wheeled counterparts and are tippy that I wouldn’t want to be in a heavy vehicle sitting side-by-side like this. I’d much prefer an actual side-by-side with tracks, which is likely why skidoo will not bring this back

we had an elan, back in 79-81, in inuvik. it was one of 3 snow machines we owned. we had faster ones, but this was, by far, my fav, for overall fun in the snow. it could go anywhere.

A such over used term these days. I sold a Polaris 650 several years ago that was on the storage side of my 36 x 45 building, was given a BS story and was back up for. a flip a couple weeks later as a "barn find". True barn finds are very cool, but don't invent one. If it hasn't been sitting for many years in an actual barn its just not a barn find.

I bought a brand new 78 when I was 18 at the dealer I worked at after school and weekends . Think I paid 1800 bucks ! It was a great all round sled . Good on fuel and reliable, it was nice and warm with the big cowl and e we rode a lot of 20- below and colder in northern bc .
@peterl20172 ай бұрын
I would say its a sled worth NOT restoring lol. With something that good, I would go through the mechanics, paint the skis only and perfect. There are tons of restored snowmobiles, but they are only original once, you just can't replace that. Plus if you want to go to shows, most rules would allow you to paint the skis, so you could still qualify as original. There are plenty of rougher ones to fully restore.

This was my first sled, bought used in 1985 or 86 for $350, it was absolutely like new. It did give me some headaches, leaking gas tank, ignition coil issues and a blown head gasket. Still a neat sled and will always be my first lol. Kinda heavy for a 15 year old on the small side.

My buddy had one of these back in 1985 (yellow/black) it sounded really loud and bad ass I rode it and it was snappy throttled, it actually was pretty comfortable and steered well at all speeds he wanted to race me on my 83' Indy 600 triple...dusted him in 150 feet, no match for the big indy.

WOULD A 1973 SILVER BULLET HOOD FIT ON A 72?
@SnojetSteve3 ай бұрын
I think those engines were a similar layout to the Nordic 370 snowmobile but liquid cooled instead of fan. It looks like the same design where the cylinders were turned in so the intake ports were close together which would make a single carburetor work much better.

I bought a 1978 250 MX4 in 1979 that was a leftover. Going from a 77 KX 125 to to the Can Am was certainly an eye opener. Bruised the back of my left leg more than once!! A buddy of mine had an XL 500 that could not out run me on the road..

I had a very nice Skidoo Citation back in the mid 80's. Same day I bought it , I decided to do some drinking that evening we ran out of beer so I volunteered to get some. There was plenty of snow in Fargo so I fired up the sled. I had made it to the bar so I figured I better have a shot of schnapps along with a 12pk to go. I was 3 sheets to the wind by now. When I left the bar I had gotten my directions mixed up. I was on a frontage road going about 50mph , eyes were watery and freezing. Next thing you know the road ended & made a hard left. I didn't come close to making the turn. I ended up missing the large black and yellow sign & hit the berm left behind from the plow truck. I hit it & went flying like Super Dave Osborne. Hit the frozen ground, beer went flying of course no helmet. A guy driving by saw it happen, he helped me get going again and I limped me & the sled home. That's when I learned not to drive a snowmobile drunk.

I had a 294 Silver Bullet & my brother had a 72' 340 TN'T. My dad had a 73' el tigre 440 free air , it would eat those Ski-doo's like a Cat eating a Canary 😂 Still good times & great memories.

Great memories my 88 elan is mint . Never owned a car just trucks I can honestly say I have driven a elan more kms than a car. Used them on my trapline from 74 to 2001 was so reliable never had the feeling if it broke down I couldn’t fix it to get home. Modem machines are more reliable but if it breaks out in bush you can’t fix them.

I had the '73 Silver Bullet behind it. It was a great machine. Then an '83 Citation for a pair.
