I’m 71. I remember my dad taking me with him to sail as a small child on the Sea Hawk. Afterwards we would go into the Yatch club, a beer for Dad and a Shirley Temple for me. I loved going up and down the grand staircase, sometimes being told it wasn’t to play on. I wasn’t playing, I WAS a princess! Lol that was during the 50’s and early 60’s. Then during the late 60’/70’s he’d sail on the Holiday. Both captains were the Keefe brothers. My dad got married and I never went sailing again, probably best because I would get really sea sick, heck I get sea sick in a canoe.

I used the same method to drill my bathtub holes bigger for a new surface faucet. Thanks. It worked well. Only suggestion from someone else that helped was to drill in reverse for the complete process since the teeth are less aggressive..

She was A Classy Ship and one we missed the boat on not keeping her ourselves for Historical Purposes. However I am happy she was saved and not meeting the same fate as the other Vessels, in Going To Scrap. Thank U for sharing this.

Yeah you nailed it the tanzer made those squared off decks...these newer designs just raised the hulls and squared off the decks for a better, robust looking flush and dryer boat. This boat looks fantastic, wonder how it sails, how it moves through the waves. I had a t 26 and loved it btw, just loved everything about it. So quick and nimble but you could be thrown around a bit, wave dancers.

No. The 8.5 was designed by Johann Tanzer and built in 1978. The Tanzer 29 was design by Joubert Nivett and built in 86 and 87. Very different designs.

Better: make sure your cover is large enough so the gelcoat is covered. Also don't run the lines just under the hull. Chafing also happens to the anti fouling. Tie the ropes to the trailer instead.

Why did you not use the metal loops on the boom?
@captaindaggett1934
@captaindaggett1934 11 ай бұрын
Great question! I personally don't like to use them because if the reefing line comes loose or the tack comes off the reefing hook it can load up those parts of the sail and tear the sail as those small cringles (or loops) are not made to hold load. Usually I just make sure that the outhaul is nice and tight and tuck the sail off to one side of the boom and with a crispy sail it is not a problem.
@markthomasson5077
@markthomasson5077 11 ай бұрын
@@captaindaggett1934 . I actually meant the metal loops that slide along the bottom of the boom,m there is one for the main sheet, which you use, the others are for the ends of the clew reefing lines. But yes, sail ties can rip holes in your sail…especially when you first have to reef your new boat,mat night…singlehanded…no autopilot. I shall be using elastic cord in future, I do prefer a tidy sail

How well can this boat handle ocean crossing? It seems like a good sailboat but many say it’s only meant for coastal sailing. Thoughts?
@inspectordaggett
@inspectordaggett Жыл бұрын
It would not be my choice for a crossing vessel. It is a well built boat but a little on the light side for long passages and potentially heavy seas that you would encounter. It really was built as a Coastal/Great Lakes club racer-cruiser. Could it do it safely, probably. Just wouldn't be my choice of the tool for the job.

Watching this again as we wait for sailing season :) A few more questions: You mentioned using a blade staysail for reaching in light wind... Do you mean you use the midstay/baby stay that bends the mast? We have one on our c&c38 but i wasn't sure if the stay should handle a sail. Could you help me understand the role of the travellers in-board of main jib travellers? Is this just an alternate for the genoa when really pointing and trimming flat? Cheers
@captaindaggett1934
@captaindaggett1934 Жыл бұрын
We use the Pole lift halyard. The stay sail is on a wire luff so we can attach it to one of the 3 padeyes on the fore deck (I think your 38 has two). The sail is rigged to hoist out a spinnaker bag and has sheets left attached. We use it just like a cutter.

Nice tip! I have been using the stevedore knot for my stopper knot. It is a bulky knot that won't come undone accidentally. However, the barrel knot looks great and I like the way the bitter end extends straight out. I'll have to practice with the piece of rope that I keep by my desk so I can remember how to do it next season. This looks like my new stopper knot!

I am thinking of buying one of them and crossing the ocean is it possible to do it solo
@captaindaggett1934
@captaindaggett1934 Жыл бұрын
The boat is capable of doing so but may not be my first choice for a solo crossing. That being said I wouldn't have any questions that it could handle it properly outfitted. A bigger factor is the person making the voyage. That is no small feat and requires a significant amount of skill and ability.

The Mk 3 has a fully cored hull but it's not as problematic as the earlier C&C 36, 38 or 40. The major area of concern is the masr step. For reasons unknown C&C used cheap bondo under the heel fitting. This cracks and crushes over the years and allows the compromised substrate to compress. This is also manifested in external cracking where the keel stub roll joins the hull.
@severthindakari

Hi there, I just purchased a 1987 35-3, and I'm pretty sure the hull is pure fiberglass. The deck is balsa core though. All the research I've done suggests that all mark 3's are fiberglass hulls, though I haven't drilled into mine lol.

Rob Ball designs from the 33 Mk2 on (including the 35mk3, 37mk2, 38mk3 and 41) Have portions that are balsa cored. The 33 only had it in the panels forward of the keel is my understanding and the 35 I think is similarly built.

Is she really that easy to sail?
@captaindaggett1934
@captaindaggett1934 Жыл бұрын
She is. The boat doesn't do anything unexpected under sail. She is a beamy boat for her length and though it does like to be healed over in higher winds the boat stiffens up nicely at about 22 degrees until you get over powered. The boat is not complicated at all and is very forgiving. Under motor in reverse she can be a bit difficult as the wide skeg rudder creates a bit of back wash in reverse and the translates into significant prop walk until you get the boat moving at about 3 knots.
