So i have steam coming out of the restricted orfice on the main valve when i crack open the steam, does that mean something interally failed in the main valve, am i in for a rebuild job on the main valve? Or is there any easy fixes?

I have one of those cut away valves on my file cabinet, it sure makes teaching about these things a whole lot easier. Contact your local Spence Rep, they may be able to see about getting a cut away.

So the bucket fills with condensate? How does the condensate leave the bucket so that it can rise back up and close the valve? I’m getting a little confused thinking about it

I used to work in a hospital. All along the main steam line there would be a chitter chatter tapping noise, it sounded like morse code but not beeps. A guy I worked with said it was the traps on the drip legs. It seems like the only plausible explanation, the valve opening and shutting. However, if there are hundreds of taps/chatters a minute, the valve flickering open and shut like that, does that not suggest something’s wrong with the valve? Or is it normal for a trap to chatter like this? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I tried google but can only find pages discussing using electronic listening devices to hear through the static whether or not a traps functioning correctly. These were thermostatic float traps

Hi Steven. You may have already resolved this, or moved on, but, yes, that doesn't sound right. - I would contact the valve/trap manufacturer. They may (should) have a rep familiar with these systems. There are a lot of things that could create problems in a steam/condensate system. An Engineer should have designed the system and sized all components correctly. If you have drawings of the system, they should list the designer or company who designed it.

I'm not surprised that these things are improperly installed. this video leaves out the proper installation of the pigtail "mechanism", and how to orient the various parts. Some years ago I had to go through a set of drawings of a 5 million dollar HVAC job to correctly orient - piping, gauges, pigtails, control valves, control cylinders so these parts would not self destruct because of these parts becoming filters of all contaminates, plus make it almost automatic cleaning of these parts to insure longevity regards

ME rapring wrking sho tel me ; Great video, really helpful, this is exactly the way I was taught. Now riddle me this Batman!! how would you suggest to trouble shoot the exact same valve, but with todays lock out tag out procedures being enforced. I am currently working at a job site that will not allow me to have live steam on the valve while troubleshooting. there is no down stream pressure, all I can do is exercise the pilot spring. this has been a function valve for over 3 years.
