That plug diverts the oil to the oil filter, if you don't no oil filtration! I have found several engines that the rebuilder missed installing. New GM blocks do not come with oil galley plugs.

Could you just pull the stud out? Then thread the bore, install a helicoil. Then torque the bolt?
@MrDanielSolizКүн бұрын
In a street stock race car you can’t spend too much money, it’s meant to be budget racing. Labor wouldn’t make it a budget fix. Labor to remove 16 studs, tap 16 holes and add 16 heilcoil(which you would need to do) plus 16 studs. Our shop rate for labor is $125.00 an hour. Would not be cost effective at all. The diy guy at home with free labor and time might agree with you.

@kevinkalivoda3442 as a metal worker (fitter and welder) if given the opportunity I will gladly take the extra steps and work on it right side up given the opportunity. Gravity can be a b!tch especially when welding and drilling
@MrDanielSolizКүн бұрын
Why try and work on it upside down. 10 seconds installing a rag saves tons of time and guarantees there won’t be any metal in the catalytic converter.
@MrDanielSolizКүн бұрын
You most definitely can work on something upside down and please make a video so we all can see how crazy that is. Let us all know when you get that video done. 🤔

That’s crazy it’s a dual wall manifold. That can’t be cheap to produce(I can’t even wrap my mind around HOW it could be produced). What’s the purpose rather than just having a cast log?
@RejectReality97Күн бұрын
Heat. The shield stays much cooler than the inside solid iron.
@alanm8932Күн бұрын
A cast iron manifold must take heat from the exhaust gas when the manifold is cold, reducing the temperature of the exhaust gas reaching the catalytic converter. They want the exhaust entering the cat as hot as possible for the cat to work properly.
@MrDanielSolizКүн бұрын
Exactly true, we need to heat up the cat as soon as possible. Right on!👍

I was careful to make sure that I had the fuel in my car, a blend of Sunoco SS100 race gas with 91 octane Shell V-Power Nitro+, to produce the blended average octane I was going to use on the street when I went to my dyno tuning session. After normalizing the A/F ratios across the rev range, the tuner was able to optimize the ignition timing for maximum power and a built in safety factor to prevent detonation. As a result of the improvements in the intake system, the exhaust system and the optimized fuel metering and ignition timing, the engine's efficiency was improved enough that the loss of gas mileage was negligible, despite the richer A/F ratios. The bonus was a cooler running engine with about a 15% increase in torque across the entire rev range.

Two things. Read the instructions. This is a critical maintenance procedure for the drivetrain, don't screw it up or you will pay and potentially get hurt. Two, torque spec various based on size of bolt. The 7/16 flywheel bolts are 75 ftlbs yes but for example the 3/8 is 85 ft lbs. Hence, read the instructions the bolt came with.

Great info! I just don't know anyone messing with iron heads unless you're in one of the stock car classes. I did cast iron screw in back in the 90s, and by 2001, I bought my first set of aluminum brodix heads, and I ainy looked back. Now I run RFD heads.

Very cool, my grandfather used to tell me about doing this on the performance engines he used to build for customers. I wish I was old enough when he closed his shop to get more of his tools. He had built a crankshaft polishing machine from an old wood turning lathe and a bunch of other machines. I loved being at his shop when I was a kid. He also taught me to shoot at 10 years old my mom never knew, my dad knew but didn't tell. Two good men!
