As part of my previous comment a few days ago about the bullheads. I was15 back in the 60s, no school, middle of August, creeks were down. One morning my dad said "Son go catch us some breakfast trout" so as a good boy I grabbed my 10ft straight bamboo pole, the only line and hook I had was about 8ft of 20 lb mono with a No.4 treble hook. With the underbrush so thick and the creek so low that was the best rigging to hit the creek with, so off I went heading up Cougar Cr. to one of my favorite spots. A log jam area with deep dark holes between the logs. I figured I'd catch a couple crawdads before getting to the jam. Just down from the log jam was a beaver pond but to my suprise there wasn't a crawdad in that beaver pond stretch of the creek and the only thing I had caught so far was a 4in bullhead so I stripped off one side and wrapped it around that treble hook. Coming into the beaver pond the creek was 3ft wide and 4inches deep that fell into a 4ft hole under a root wad, top of the tree still on the bank, so carefully walking down the tree I swung that hook and white bullhead meat out over that root wad gently letting it free fall into that green blue water, and all of a sudden I saw this dark green shadow slide out from under the roots, I knew it was a fish but I couldn't believe my eyes it was like a submarine his nose right up on that chunk of meat turning away swiftly he slapped it with his tail, turned back towards it and opening his mouth sucked it in, I just watched that piece of bullhead meat as it disappeared. With my legs shaking I said count to 10, count to 10. I don't think I made it to 5 before I sunk the hook and when I did all hell broke loose, that fish broke surface and headed down stream. With 8 ft of line I jumped over that rootwad into waistdeep water. With 10 ft of bamboo and 8ft of line I was running down the bank. By now I had the line in my hands and I swept that fish right up on the bank and jumped on that sucker. He was long and lean had eaten everything there was to eat out of that beaver pond. Red under his gills he was a 26 inch sea run cutthroat that had got caught up the creek from the spring. Thank- you little bullhead, I'm 73 now but that was the best fishing day of my life.
