The government's only thought should be to give us a "hand up", not a "hand out". They should be encouraging people to utilize their gifts to support themselves. Provide them opportunity so they can get to work taking care of their families. The problem with socialism is that people would start to ask why they would need to do anything if the government is just going to give them what they need? The problem with that is, you become a slave to the person you're indebted to and, you definitely don't want to be indebted to the government, especially a government that doesn't care about you. You could say, "Okay, we'll just make the rich pay more taxes." That's fine but, when that reservoir runs dry, who's door do you think they're going to come knocking on? This country has more opportunity out there than any other country in the world! That's why foreigners come to this country in the first place but, we have to be willing to work for what we want.
