That is another thing, this mare does the same thing when I swing and cue with the whip, she stops and directs her full attention on me waiting for a command; however, never wants to keep moving. Lunging is a nightmare and even trotting along side me. She wants to be close to me instead of moving away.

The good Lord blessed me with the opportunity to give my little girl her first horse. I have been riding and rodeoing for over 40 years yet, the mare we have is incredibly spooky. She does not care if I wave or touch her with noisy objects because she trusts me but even though she is used to the highway, tractors, dogs, chickens, and cows, she spooks at the slightest sound of wind blowing through the trees. I have been desensitizing her to her surroundings for several months now, so she should be used to this by now and isn't. I need to make sure I have her well trained and calm before I let my daughter ride. Advice?

This is SOOOOOO helpful! Thank you!!! I'm thrilled to have this technique to help my new 10 yo sweet, scared QH! I've been doing the horse thing a long time and nobody suggested this to me! Makes SO much sense! Blessings!

So in this video you talk a lot about the concept but not what to do to apply the concept. Just constant ground work with sone form of objects is going to fix the issue?

This has been very useful for me thanks. I am concerned about getting her so slow that she four beats in the lope. Also you didn’t smooch her into the lope. I gather that this mare actually doesn’t need as much slow down as you’re trying to get but she is an excellent individual for this type of instruction. I have struggled with this for such a long time. My mare and I were trained together from the ground up and that took 12 years. I suspect that we need another few years of coaching to round us out nicely.

You are describing me. I always expected my horse, a steady Eddie, to spook in place until he didn’t. He bolted, and I have some broken bones (just wings of vertebrae thankfully) in my back.

I recently discovered your videos and they are perfect for the work I am doing with my young horse. Your explanations and demonstrations are some of the best I have seen. It is also fascinating to see the colour changes in Ms. Purina because my young mare is exactly the same colouring with the white blaze down her face and all. Right now, she is still dark through the body but lighter in the face and still has the black mane and legs. I can see how my mare is likely to look in a few years and that is pretty cool to see because Ms. Purina is just beautiful.

This was very helpful. I have a Playgun grandson and he tends to want to drop to a trot from a lope or a walk from a trot…unless we’re with cattle. Then he’s all business until I say quit! So your advice is very helpful to get him in the same work ethic when he’s doing other things besides working cattle. Thank you!

The problem with loop reins is riders that are inexperienced and the rider leans forward or braces against the rein. I think it best to learn how to manage split reins properly. Roping or barrel racing are two exceptions.

I was doing the tarp on cutting bred filly and we were in the round pen and she started bucking and following me as I frantically was trying to get out of her way. I think she wanted me to protect her because the tarp got hung on the saddle horn. I ended up jumping in the water trough before she killed me.. She finally stopped so I could get it off.

Thank you. Oddly this was the first video that popped up today and earlier today was the first time I used a western spur on my mare and she started doing bucks as she went into lope (not usual for her). I took them off and all was good. So your video was just what I needed! Thank you 🙏🏻

I just found your channel. That could be our haflinger that you are working with in this video. She acts just like that. I believe she has abuse in her past and she's extremely spooky. I have to admit I was desensitizing her by having her stand still. But no more, starting tomorrow. There will be lots of changes in her training. Thank you for posting this. ✝️📖⚖️⌛️❤️

Thank you! I bought a 14 yo that has some major spooking issue (to the point I got thrown and broke 3 ribs and punctured a lung). I've done a ton of desensitizing from the ground but was having issues when he was moving and this never occurred to me. It makes perfect sense! This mare in this video reminds me a LOT of Makani and how he reacts. I'm still having 2 issues: When he's moving and something touches his flank/comes from behind and loud 2-stroke "popping" motorcycles and I'm not sure how to help him with that. I live in an urban area and we encounter motorcycles, golf carts, cyclists as well as loud cars/trucks getting to the horse parks. It's a lot. Love this video and I will definitely start incorporating this into my groundwork days!

Very interesting- so one question is, this seems to have the absence of the knots many rope halters have on the horses nose/ muzzle area. I am not familiar with your horsemanship or training, so is this something you feel is unkind to the horse? I currently use a leather halter and do have a chain lead - but hook it back to itself so it cannot tighten down. Just curious your viewpoint. Thank you
