How did you start with it being a right hand drive and when driving it being a left hand drive

Make it a habit: when unscrewing the oil filler cap, put it on the bonnet lock so you cannot possibly close the bonnet without removing that filler cap from there.

As an long time fan and owner of Smarts from 2006 to date, whilst the Roadster is great fun it's not without faults and expense. Timing chains, clutch and clutch actuators are all items which need changing on a Roadster. Timing chain around 80k or before if it's s rattling. Around £500 to change. Clutches can fail anything from 40-80k miles, the same for the clutch actuator. The former costing around £550 including fitting, the latter £350ish. You really need an auto technician who is familiar with Smarts and has the WinStar or equivalent diagnostic system able to talk to the car and undertake clutch reteaching. As for the infamous leaks, no matter how many mods you undertake nearly every Roadster will have water ingress from some point. If the SAM and/or ECU units suffer water ingress which is their typical downfall, that's a dead car and a lot of cash to fix. Oil should be changed every 3-6k miles using fully synthetic correct MB spec to ensure engine longevity. Mine was always serviced using Mobil1 0w30, which is like sewing machine oil. The turbo charger can fail prematurely from neglected servicing and correct oil. Likewise with the engine dropping a piston or throwing bearings, resulting in rebuilding.

I'm looking for one at the moment but slightly put off by the horror stories about costs. Yours doesn't seem too bad. I work in Harlow...I'll be using BiGSuds if I get one! Who is the mechanic you use?

I am looking to purchase this car.. would the car experience leaks from the roof if the car is kept outside?

All Roadster leak no matter how many retro mods are undertaken. Mine leaked water through the door mirrors which would trickle down the doors and speakers. It would also leak through the roof seals during heavy rain. SAM unit (control module and relays etc) is located under the wiper tray which is known to collect water and blow the unit. Whilst I loved the car, as many owners find it was a nightmare at times, and costly to fix.

The K11 and the MX-5 are the only cars I have had two of. My first was a 2001 1.4 manual which my little bro put an induction cone on which made it surprisingly loud when revved. My 2nd is a 1.0 Tempest in grey with a spoiler and 2 doors, still have it after 3yrs of ownership and 25k miles. It's currently on 110,000 miles and still drives the same it did at 85k. Mine is rare as the paint is still great. I've replaced the fan speed module (in the passenger footwell) which took 4mins and otherwise I change oil every 6k miles or 6 months and it's full major service with a few extra repairs just cost me £265 a few weeks ago. I have had and will continue to have nicer cars but the K11 will always serve as a perfect 2nd car as it never lets me down and costs nothing to own. Long live the K11.

You've been advised incorrectly about oil - they were never designed to have oil that lasts a lifetime, nor does older oil ever turn corrosive. The sumps rust from the outside in, they're just very cheap metal.

I had the same mentality as you when coming off sertraline aha. Tried going cold turkey after a year but the side effects kept kicking my ass hard. Consulted my gp and they ran me through a 9 week plan to come off it and I've been fine since. Biggest lesson I learnt from that was to ask for help when I'm way out of my league. Makes dealing with shit the world dishes out a lot easier to navigate when someone's drawn me a hypothetical map aha

Late k11 Micras still are good looking cars. I had brief use of a 1.0 s and used my Mum's 1.4 2002 Micra activ these are decent cars. The 1.4 is the better engine, a lot more rapid.

I own a 2006 Roadster coupe. I’ve owned it for 5 years it’s done 26000 miles and drives like new. I’m a retired mechanic so i do all my own maintenance. So much fun to drive. It’s got a hard top that’s insulated that stops leaks and you can drive it even in winter. A fantastic car and can do 65mpg. A future classic I’m sure. Enjoy yours.

Those cars aren't about breaking speed limits but their only made to have a whole lot of fun, that might be also one of the reasons it sold so poorly in the 2000's, obviously back in the day there were cars with better spec sheets for cheaper but when you really try one that's when you can feel the joy it can bring to you

You have a cupholder. It's located in the back of the passengers seat. You just need to close it first. Once you find "it", you should remember its officially cupholder and coat hanger. =) Gearbox is also 3 speed with 2 final drives. That Is the reason why 3->4 or 4->3 switcher are longer then other ones. For performance driving try to avoid those gear switches, or go straight to 2->4 / downshift from 4th to 2nd with gas pedal(kickdown button). Also on downshifts "blip" the throttle, will rev match better and spool the turbo a bit. You can switch 2>5 gear with auto/manual button. Just get to 5800-6000 rpm on 2nd, let go on throttle, push "auto' button on gearbox, it will go on 5th gear. Boost on gears 1-5 is 1bar, gear 6 does 0.7 bar on stock 86hp firmware. Brabus is running 1.2 bar afaik.

Nice review :) Used to have similar last facelift silver 2001 K11 Micra with 1,0 litre engine as well (Finnish spec) from 2008 to 2011. Indeed the silver paint started flaking off from the rear hatch, when the car was about 9,5 years old. Seems to be common problem in these cars. Pretty practical for it's size, good boot space, and my car had even 60/40 folding rear seat and heated driver's seat, even it was the most basic trim level (Micra Hit). Rear brakes had to be replaced and lastly check engine came on with system too lean fault code, but it was never resolved properly as I replaced the car with new Suzuki Alto in 2011. The code was cleared, but the check engine light came back after a while.

Fantastic cars.... I've owned my finale edition for over 12 years. I don't think I'll ever get rid of it.... It now only comes out on sunny days but apart from a slight leak over the door mirrors, it has never missed a beat. I love it. 😊

Sadly only one. Not allowed on the road in the. States. Had an American family member over we all went to the Scotish Highlands on holiday. Let him drive for much of the time of around three weeks. Don'think the grin left his face, he is I his early thirties. I drove the 568 miles home and much to my surprise was not remotely stiff being over 60 a pleasant surprise, only two brief stops

@@quyhillchaos It was one of my dream cars. I wanted it for 2 years at this point and I decided to buy one from a dealer near me. It was mapped with an aftermarket turbo and air-filter, great fun as a daily, it made a tremendous sound. I couldn't believe I actually got to own a Smart Roadster, it felt unreal. Unfortunately after 2 weeks of buying it, the car started to overheat badly (according to the temperature guage). Quickly it would rise up to 130c. I decided to return it to the dealer as I felt that the car going wrong after 2 weeks was unacceptable. My heart said to keep it but in the end, my head said to get rid of it. I will be buying another one in the future though, too much fun.
