I saw them on Amazon and have thought about it. We went for the name of Samsung as we simply couldn't judge Oukitel well enough. What I have learned from smart phones (or software in general), I am willing also to pay for "long lasting support" for the Android/OS versions. Not sure how this is for Oukitel and I hope that Samsung will support the Active series for a while.

I've built and used two rpi navigation computers with AIS recently, both using the official touchscreen and using a third party screen. The hardest part about using these is mounting the screen. This is difficult to do on a boat due to the constant movement and other stresses the gear is under. Looking at the glue-in screen that you used here, I don't see that lasting very long at all under way. I have not seen that version before. I had one screen die on me already, which is one reason I made a second touch screen system. I am not sure where to get a good screen for my first system (not the official touch screen). Do you have any advice on a good screen with mounting parts that made it easy to install on the boat?
@Sir-Real
@Sir-Real 10 күн бұрын
Screens to be glued are usually screens which are connected via the DSI interface and usually they can stack the Raspberry itself. These screens are limited in size and they are not intended to be placed outdoors. So, below deck I think this will last and is okay. It is a cheap solution best for dashboards. For plotter software you need a bigger screen, HDMI based. I find this difficult if it needs to be outside. I went now for a Samsung Active 10" tablet. I plan to create a video soon about it, waterproof tablet, Wifi connected to my Raspberry.

I looked very closely at this transponder and it is excellent. Unfortunately a bit of research revealed that AIS transponders must be officially certified and approved before they can be used, which is not permitted for a home made device regardless of how good it is. A real shame as the guy spent a lot of time and effort to make an excellent device that would have helped numerous sailors.

Yes, I mentioned this as well. It is a different story in the US, but in Europe you need an approval for transmitting. You can just use it for reception. However, it is not available anymore anyway :(

Yes, this is possible. But usually you run one NMEA multiplex service / one Signal K. So you need to transfer the AIS data on a different channel. You can use Node-RED, take the serial data of the dAISy HAT, forward it via TCP to the RPI5 and hand it over there to Signal K.

You need to put this to a forum, difficult to help in KZbin commentary. But the info you need to post: Is I2C activated in raspi-config? Can you see the I2C address e.g. with i2cdetect -y 1 (i2c tools need to be installed). Did you add an I2C device? Are you using OpenPlotter or what kind of configuration? Finally: I do not own an Neo M8U, so in a forum it would be easier to find someone which has experience with this specific module.

Hi, thanks for the demo! Do you have any idea about how RPI 5 compares to RPI 4 regarding power consumption? I am thinking about an upgrade but I have limited power on board (currently).
@Sir-Real
@Sir-Real 2 ай бұрын
Good point! The specification limits the power consumption to 7.5W on a PI4 vs. 15W on a PI5. (Looking at the power supply: peaks are higher: 5V*3A=15W vs. 5V*5A=25W). This is all theory. Practical tests show idle consumption of 275mA (1.375W) vs. 500mA (2.5W) and in action 1.3A (6.5W) vs. 2.15A (10,75W). In a nutshell: Yes, more energy. Still below anything we need to worry about. Your anchor light will take the same amount of energy, probably. I own a 150Ah (on 12V) LiFePo4. Running a PI5 in action for 24h would draw about 20A (based on 12V). And using energy save modes will reduce this (screen off etc.). I would calculate with 10Ah on my 12V battery in 24h. Much more important: A good power supply! Or the PI5 will crash.

Hi Sir. Maybe others can use it. Daher nicht auf Deutsch... I have Raspberry 4B + Wegmatt dAISy HAT + OpenPlotter with SignalK and AvNav. In addition NVCharts App on Android. I can do a lot at home in testbed: Access to Wegmatt setup screen ok. Let it send test messages. I2C sensors connected via dAISy Hat ok. SignalK shows I2C sensor values. GPS works with USB receiver outside and with SKSimulator for testing. Injection of AIS test data in SignalK also works -> I see it in AvNav. BUT: it does not work end to end. I do not see anything in NVCharts. Manual does not explain setting exactly. As always - the root cause is me. I will answer myself, just made it work! 1. dAISy Hat's test messages must be closed (screen session). If not, the serial data do not reach SignalK. Most important detail. 2. Settings in NVCharts were ok. Test station can be seen. So easy (if everything is correct). 3. The simulated, injected AIS data were somehow not correct, therefore causing error in NVCharts and confusing me. Next: Now I will proceed with more sensors. @Sir-Real Thank you anyway. Your channel is a great help and inspiration.

Cool video! Thx a lot. Small hints: AvNav simply runs a script when an alarm is occuring. By default the OP AvNav installer set this script to play a sound. Not sure why this did not work all the time (you could check AvNav logs for the script call). Unfortunately on OpenPlotter there is a lot of different software - not sure what potentially could influence the playing of the sound. I personally would potentially directly let the script control a GPIO pin... Other hint: If you do not need OpenPlotter for other purposes you could also run the AvNav standalone image...

As I started on my boat there has been no PI5. And as MacArthur was published, PI5 was not fully supported. This changed with OpenPlotter 4.x.x. The advantage of a PI4 is the lower power consumption. And the PI4 is fast enough if you don't use OpenCPN. So, currently the PI4 is fine for me. What power issue are you referring to? The PI4 takes 3-5W on my setup.
