Oldman can "become" the character he is portraying, better than maybe any actor, definitely of his generation. ~JSV

god gary oldman was so damn perfect in this movie, beethoven is one of my many favorite composers and gary protrayed him beautifully.

This story comes from Tolstoy's book The Kreutzer Sonata...but its better here

Yeah but Schindler can't answer so Beethoven answers for him. So the music doesn't take the listener directly into the mental state of the composer because we have to hear the story from the composer's mouth first. The directness completely goes out of the window. In this scene, Beethoven obliterates an ideology almost as soon he sets it up.

This movie somehow isn’t just heartbreaking for the sake of it. You can feel the unconditional love through his music and the words he uses and I finally understand what that means. I have so much reverence for Beethoven and respect for everything he went through his whole life and for everything mankind has to overcome in all our lives. Truly a great and good man.

Yes... : ( hypnotism, getting into the mental state or mind of a person, a listener has no choice.... and this has been scientifically proven (by secular scientists), using the scientific method... They have showed the adverse effects of polyrhythmic music, they used the word "hypnotism" specifically..
@alecjones4676 Жыл бұрын
The word hypnotism didn't even enter the lexicon at this point in history. He could have said "mesmerism" and it at least would have been slightly more accurate

This is my favourite scene in the whole movie. It might be fiction, but Beethovens frustration through this piece is palpable. The listener truely has no choice.

Transcription for you all: -"Music is a dreadful thing. What is it? I don't understand it. What does it do?" -"It exaults the soul." -"Utter nonsense, if you hear a marching band, is your soul exalted? No, you march. If you hear a waltz, you dance. If you hear a mass, you take communion. It is the power of music... to carry one directly into the mental state... of the composer. The listener has no choice. It is like hypnotism. So, now... What was in my mind when I wrote this? A man is trying to reach his lover. His carriage has broken down in the rain. The wheels stuck in the mud. She will only wait so long. This... is the sound of his agitation. "This is how it is..." the music is saying. "Not how you are used to being. Not how you are used to thinking. But like this."" -"Who was the woman? He never told me. I knew better than to ask. He made me see the world in an entirely new light."

This scene is historically inaccurate. Beethoven was not totally deaf when he met George Bridgetower and they premiered the piece together with Beethoven at the piano. The same night they engaged in a fight at a local canteen as a result of which they broke relations and never talked to each other again.
