I'm late to the party, but I am going to try something similar to this on a Mora 511.

Awesome setup man. I love the Recon Scout. My dad bought one for his brother years ago, we flew it from NY to the Philippines in a balikbayan box. $10 for the customs agent of course 😉. I love how you modded it might have to try that myself.

I find it insulting that so many USA companies insist on using 1095 and then charging 150 to 200 + for it. I dont care how good the heat treat is, it wont hold an edge worth a damn in the field and its such a cheap steel.
@urbanknifeguy9 сағат бұрын
I have stopped buying Tops knives since because of that 😅
@vltn3020Күн бұрын
In my opinion, aside from the basics like a wallet, keys, and phone, the only extra things most people need for everyday carry are a pocket knife and a flashlight. You could go with just a pocket knife, or a Swiss Army knife, or a multi-tool-or even pair a pocket knife with a Swiss Army knife or multi-tool. But honestly, those two items-knife and flashlight-cover almost everything you'd need.

I agree but for me i can see just a simple hankie being useful, well at least for me, and even i wouldn't say very useful, id say just useful enough to keep around me, and as a trombone player a nice microfiber is nice to wipe the old oils off and apply new ones, or drying my hands of too much hand sanitizer, or sometimes when im outside ill wash my hands in a river or just somewhere to get the sweat off and then i can dry my hands in a hankie, but i agree with you, not everyone needs it

Not sure that poncho is meant to travel at ankle level, if you are in the bush, you should be using knee high gators that will water proof lower legs
@urbanknifeguy2 күн бұрын
That does make sense. Although no one here (that I have seen) uses gaiters.
@gearaustralia87672 күн бұрын
@ wow, very commonly used here, great for deflecting heavy brush/thorns off your legs, keeping water off in long wet grass, and in Australia we are very careful to avoid snakes, all serious hikers use gaiters as extra snake protection. I have this Helikon poncho but haven’t used it yet
@urbanknifeguy2 күн бұрын
@gearaustralia8767 Thanks for sharing! Different kind of brush here. We still get snakes but the average hiker will not deliberately go through long grass or swamps. Trail runners and long pants are the most common here. Some even in shorts.
@gearaustralia87672 күн бұрын
@ cool 😎 depends on the trail type, trail runners are used here but only on nicer tracks, a lot of tracks cross very rocky and uneven surfaces, I always use boots and put the gaiters on in thick or wet brush, in heat I wear shorts but still wear boots and gaiters 😂

Love the holder funny thing is l have all the stuff but don’t have a holder 😂😂😂 l would put it on a keybak lanyard and stick it in my pocket and when l need it pull it out and it’s tethered to a Kevlar cord and then safely tucked away in my pocket, Merry Christmas to everyone.
@Olyphoto73 күн бұрын
Nice piece of kit. I think I would hook the lanyard to the d ring on the back, just seems more sturdy. I also agree that a breakaway lanyard would be a great add.

Have 2 carbon steel knives in my kitchen, yes you have to wash and dry them directly after use but I've never noticed any changes in the flavour of food after using the carbon blade's. I like both the Mora Sandvik and the carbon. I'd probably go for the Sandvik because I have a Jaakari puuko and a Peltonen in carbon already so I'd prefer the different steel for different uses/conditions.

Great review JC. I was thinking the lanyard could be clipped to the D ring. The fabric tab can then be used to rip the ID part off. But like you say the fabric tab is kinda wimpy and would wear out quickly. Thanks for another great video!

I do agree about your views with scandi grinds. I used to buy mainly scandi grinds but had lately preferred either convex or V grinds. I still carry scandi once in a while but found myself gravitating towards convex. The M4 have always been in my radar but somehow something else just takes my attention away.
