Curiosity for those that own this Ted.. I have been using the Cyan2 for a few months long with a Wiim pro. I’d be interested in having this Holo Red but only have an iPhone. Iam guessing all this can be setup on a phone as like on a computer (?). By chance can I use a ‘less common’ music service that is included with my KZbin (KZbin music) as well as the others listed here? Realizing of coarse it’s not a premium service.. would i experience a higher quality listening experiences using the Red and giving up the Wimmas a steamer in your opinion? That’s what this option all about quality stream?
@stereoazimuth18 күн бұрын
Yes, you can use an iPhone for setup. With YT music, you would still probably have to use UPnP with something like mconnect for iOS or BubbleUPnP for Android. Tim Kitsune likes to run his Red with the USB out into the USB input on the May. I still think this is a better than what is in the Cyan and certainly better than the Wiim.

Great video! Thank you for making this. Can you comment on which services require exclusive access to an output, and how that affects the ergonomics? For instance, is it possible to have Roon Read and Tidal Connect both output to the native outputs (SPDIF/I2S, etc) and switch from one to another just by stopping playback in one app and starting playback in another, without having to mess with the Red configs? Another burning question - why is there no output selection under NAA? How does determine where it outputs, or does it require exclusive access to the entire device if enabled? Hope you don't feel like Holo Audio tech support, information about the ergonomics of the Red is really hard to come by and you just became the #1 source on the internet :)
@stereoazimuth22 күн бұрын
I do not use Tidal, but if you play Tidal through Roon, then it will use the Roon output. But yes, you can switch like you said. I did this with normal UPnP and with Roon. Just make sure to stop the player and not just pause. The services will tell you what is exclusive when you select them as you see in the video. I think the last two options are, but I cannot remember. I don't use Red OS on a daily basis. There is no output under NAA because I believe those are just going to default to the main outs and there might be a selection of outputs within NAA, I am not sure.

You made my day! Great vid👍👍 I had to discover the software like you but I had to figure out an extra step. Using my 2013 iMac I could not login to the RED software. ROON resides on a Mac Mini M1 (headless) in another room so what I did was to use Remote Sharing and pull up a Google web browser remotely and type in the red IP address and then IT WORKED! I have my RED connected to my Holo Cyan2 with a USB cable. I was able play several DSD files I got for free from Steve Guttenberg/HD Tracks and it plays just fine. I plan to go back in to the RED setup and take a look at the USB Redirector like you demoed. I have Airplay 2 going as well so I’ll try the RED without Airplay 2 on and see if I notice a sound quality improvement. Many thanks to you for your first RED video to inspire me to buy it. As a great sounding streamer would you also call it a transport, much like a CD transport? Best to you👍👍
@stereoazimuth22 күн бұрын
I would not call it a transport, because there are no moving parts. I guess it is kind of moving the bits from one to the next, but Transport is more or less taken. Streamer or DDC is probably the best descriptor.

Thanks for the video man! I was exactly looking for something like this and was wondering why there aren't any! Couple of extra capacitors in a ultra low noise PSU are not really worth the extra 150 euros. I'm going to build mine in the next days.
@ariansadafi403316 күн бұрын
So for anyone reading this later! I tried it out. First I tried to measure the noise with a Smartscope digital oscilloscope. The results were quite disappointing. But I believe the oscilloscope was on itself quite noisy on that level (I was aiming for 5v for my Wiim Pro Plus). I even ordered two sets of caps only to know that I have the good Nichicons (they are quite hard to find, just like the hammond). Later I also added another inductor+100uF cap after the main caps trying to build a second stage low cut. Also a resistor in parallel helped to reduce some high frequency noise. I can’t exactly tell before testing with a proper high res scope. But still I don’t believe I could go below 10uV level by any means. And maybe for 5V there are cheaper options than the hammond. I paid 25€ for a Chinese one. But anyway I connected it to my wiim and call me crazy but I can really hear a better bass punch and deeper sound stage. 🤣🤣 thanks again for the video. It’s definitely a cool project and totally worth the time to avoid a +200€ PSU.

I’m a Holo May DAC owner and I also own Kitsune’s Sigixr D2D converter, so I am familiar with how amazing all their products are. And I haven’t tried the Red. Having said that, I really like the Sonore Signature Rendu network bridge, because it stops all the noise that comes through Cat 6 copper cables, which act like noisy antennas. It uses a fiber optical connection, which essentially isolates all the noise from your streamer/computer and the network from getting into your DAC. It sounds fabulous and makes a difference with a high end DAC like the Holo May.
@stereoazimuthАй бұрын
Isn't the Sonore Signature Rendu like $5,300 and the optical module another $500? So at that price, sure.
@BrentLeVasseurАй бұрын
@@stereoazimuth Yes but there are also lower cost one too I think. I got the top of the line because it was basically parity for the KTE Holo May. If I has a less expensie lower performing DAC I would have probably gone with the lower priced model, but I was going for overkill. I also got the KTE Sigexur D2D converter, which it turns out I probably didn’t need because the input to the Holo May is plenty good already and I barely heard any difference. But there was a noticeable difference from going from my M1 Mac Mini directly into my dac via usb vs. using the Sonore network bridge. The difference was about 7-8% improvement in overall SQ.
@BrentLeVasseurАй бұрын
@@stereoazimuth Also Tp-Link makes a $20 ethernet to SFP fiber adapter. So for around $200 you can get two of them and a sfp network switch (netgear) that will allow you to isolate your computer from your DAC. I use those with the Sonore transport, but it should also work with the Red as well and provide further noise reduction.

They have a sharp peak around 4-6k. Some say hyped high end and meaning false hi-fi because of this reason. I find Grados have a similar signature and are uncomfortable and more glary, grainy, and flat dynamics in the highs. HD800 are certainly more for warmer sounding tube amps that don't have sharp transients. The trick is a good tube amp that is worthy of the HD800 for showing off all the details.
