I thought about the decision to reject Signal in comparison to Threema. I can partially agree with respect to server location, you might want to read my other post about that. However, while I truly think, Switzerland is much more reliable than the USA, I am not convinced that Threema should be the way to go. 1. How much of a problem is the server location if messaging is a) encrypted end to end and b) messages are not stored on the server at all. 2. With Threema, one relies on that the company providing the service sticks to its policies while Signal is developed and operated by a foundation. The economic pressure on a company seems to me higher than on a foundation such that 3) It would seem to me possible to operate a Signal server on ones' own hardware. I am not sure whether the Threema on prem is in a feasible cost range.

Many thanks for your effort going FOSS and all the explanations here. 10:49 To me this is not a meme but the simple truth. The people storing data or processing data in the cloud hardly ever own anything of the hardware there. The have contracts with the provider of the cloud services, but as far as I can tell, jurisdiction about what they are allowed to do or in case of conflicts is where the actual hardware the data is on is located, i. e. if the cloud server is on Tonga, jurisdiction of Tonga applies. If I understood correctly, this is one of the reasons why Signal did not make the cut.

It'd be nice to actually visit the places. 😞
