Anyone saying some animals dont revert back to animal instincts have never seen an abandoned dog, or a general house cat that makes their way outside.

Unpopular opinion but why not take care of the animals in captivity and ensure they have the best care, and not catch/breed any more cetaceans in captivity?

Keiko should never have been released now if he was with other whales in captivity they could have released them together as a family and he probably would have done better.

The whole story is really taken out of perspective… Keiko did seek human company, that is true. He was taught to do so, such habits would not be easily broken. But at the end of the day, he had 5 good years of freedom. He outlived the vast majority of captive male orcas- I believe only one survived longer? -so we cannot say his life was cut short by his release. Given the terrible conditions he had been kept in previously, he would most definitely have died younger if not for rehabilitation. He did interact with wild orcas, despite the language barrier between different pods. Male orcas tend to keep to the periphery of the pod naturally, so his distance from them cannot automatically be taken as a failure to adapt. Keiko did travel and find food well enough. It was sickness that did him in, and after years in a filthy little tank it’s really no surprise he would be vulnerable to pneumonia. In what way can we truly say he was worse off for having been freed? If only he had been rehabilitated sooner, he may have fared better still! Going forwards, we should continue to try and rehabilitate other orcas for release into the wild. Better to find the individual’s birth family, or try to release multiple individuals together to support each other. But we should still try to remedy the wrongs inflicted on these creatures

You dont' release wild animals that have been out of the wild like that. How idiotic. How stupid and how cruel. And the a-hole governments that barred people from interacting with him. The poor thing was lonely and wanted the interaction. Freedom for him sucked worse than captivity.

@@averycheesypotato He was accepted by people and people gave him attention. The other wild orcas ignored him. It was cruel to let him go and insist that people not be allowed to play with him. Freedom is not a great thing for a social animal when it's left alone. This reminds me of when we closed the mental hospitals and mentally ill people died in the streets. The people that pushed for the hospitals to be closed said things liek "at least they died free." It was cruel & only done to make the people freeing them feel better about themselves.

@@CarbonGlassMan but Keiko did interact with & travel with other orcas. Again, male orcas tend to stick to the periphery in pods naturally. Seeking humans because he expects extra kindness & food does not automatically mean he was lacking- just as a person getting a pet dog is not automatically lacking human interaction. We cannot conclude he was badly off. Besides, he certainly did not get to socialize normally in captivity! Going forwards we could look to pair reintroduced orcas up, or better yet find their birth families. Many captive female orcas have also been bred and then separated from their calfs, which is unnatural and extremely traumatic for mother & calf alike. Reuniting animals in this situation would absolutely be a net-positive

@@averycheesypotato I just don't buy any of that. It was not integrated into a wild family. It didn't stick with a pod, so it was an outsider that didn't speak the same language as the other wild orcas. I get the idea of releasing the animal back to the wild seems like a good thing. I understand the sentiment. I just don't believe it's a good thing to do after the animal has been removed from the wild for 20+ years. I especially think it's cruel for governments to demand that people have no contact with the animal. Another orca that was wild but orphaned & alone went up to people to play & interact with them and the local government began fineing people for playing it it. They ever went so far as to fine people for making eye contact with it. That is evil & cruel. This one wanted to play with people. It wasn't being forced. He wanted to play like a dog wants to play with people. We even had a young bull that wanted to play when he saw us come outside. It's cruel to deny an animal play when it asks for it.

”He lived a better healther life”… You just told me he got rejected by everyone he met, forbidden to see humans and died of pnemonia a year after release…. What part of that is better or healther? The truly sad thing about this story and most animal stories is that the well being of the animal isn’t actually what people want. They want a good story, they want to hear ”he lived happily ever after” and are willing to spend a lot of money to hear the story. Reality is ”He has been fucked up for 20 years and is never comming back from that”, but people don’t want that story. People do not care about reality, they care about feeling good, and believing false things is always dangerous since your actions will not have the effect you desired, in this case killing the whale you tried to give a better life.

His last year of life was far better than another whale shown in this video (in the small pool, before the meaning of Keiko’s name is shown). Her name was Lolita, and she died recently at 57 years of age. She never saw freedom.

He was taken as a ba y when he was just learning to talk, and kept over 20 years. No wonder they couldn't find the whale pod with the correct vocalization. I'm sure he was happier in the ocean than in a tiny tank of chemical water in Mexico

We can't be certain his perspective in death: whether he felt abandoned and lonely, or alone and free to roam. We can only hope for the latter. However, given his interactions with people, I believe humans were his "pod," and he likely suffered from loneliness and stress because of that. I am inclined to think that the stresses of being lonely for a short year led to a premature death. It’s truly sad. He might have liked a vacation in the wild, but would probably have been overjoyed to return to captivity and that and the people there would have been considered "home".

This project offered us valuable insight and a clearer understanding of the consequences of keeping a whale in captivity, what can be undone and what can't. It breaks my heart that he was starved of the socialisation and sense of family he needed but I'm glad he was free and healthy for a while.

To all you saying they never should take them from the ocean. Yeah, we know that! But, we don’t have control over that. We don’t get to decide what poachers take what whales. It wasn’t illegal though should’ve been at the time. How are you all pissed at children for donating money to free their favorite animal. Favorite character. Just why can’t anyone look at anything in a good way. No he didn’t live long in the wild but he got back into the wild. Be became healthy. A better weight, he was in the wild. Would you rather him be meat? Or have him be killed? People still never gave up on him. I hope no one ever would give up on me. And I’m hopeless. Some animals change our lives. Sometimes people just want to complain about things they never tried to change. He was worth it 💜

I hate that they call this a failure. Because it absolutely wasnt. he wasnt as free as the world wanted. But he got to be in the ocean, and feel the tide. They should really put all the orcas in captivity in an open ocean pen, it would be healthier for them if they cant survive in the wild
