Love to hear masters speaking about their work. I've learned so much from this interview. Specifically your comments about the burning palms shots as elements of world building and getting the audience invested, the objects that re-appear (bull statue, ring, beetle at Duncan Idaho's death) as references, and 'brain stemmy' shots... were extremely interesting and thought provoking. The idea about re-watching an edit in black and white, to see it with fresh eyes in a sense, is also quite interesting. What a treat to be able to have these insights into how you think about your work. Thanks for sharing.

This is singlehandedly the BEST interview I have ever seen. It's easy to watch, interesting to listen to, but the interviewer is also so good at asking industry-relevant questions. They know what they themselves are talking and asking about, and are simply asking for their perspective, story, elaboration, and excitement. I feel BOTH parties enjoyed their time here, and that is an amazing thing to see. Thank you!

Amazing interview. I'm an architect raised and currently returning (from the UK) to live in Budapest. I had been a fan of books from the age 13, but always thought it's impossible to put to film (although I did enjoy the Lynch version as a kid). Your Dune movies were outstandingly ambitious, for me, personally inspiring as a designer... The artistry, invention, design, photography, and -of course - editing including the sound is so similar to the atmosphere of the books, I am in awe. It's so hard to grasp, yet to portray. Contemplative, poignant. Congratulations, truly. The sensory images you were mentioning I beleive is strongly connected to the concept called haptic architecture (in this case the architecture is the set of the shot, whether man-made or natural), read the Eyes of the Skin by Juhanni Pallasmaa (Flopping an image is also a tool we use sometime to see the proportions and designs)

Hey Joe, I just watched Dune: Part 2 this weekend. I work as an Assistant Editor in scripted broadcast television, and all I can say is, your work is deeply inspiring to me. It absolutely reignited a flame that was beginning to dwindle a bit for my profession. Your choices and dedication to using all of the tools we have as editors (timing, sound, VFX) have absolutely given me the spirit needed to improve my storytelling skills. Denis was absolutely the perfect director to make Dune, but it's clear that you were absolutely the perfect editor to make it with him.

Hi @Oathbreakingninja - thank you so much for this heart-warming message. Much appreciated! There's a new podcast on AOTC up this week, a brief chat with Steve Hullfish about Dune Part 2. Steve's recent chat with Walter Murch was a great listen, I can recommend that, too. May your editing skills shine as bright as the desert sun of Arrakis!

I just now watched Dune last night and I love it! I don't know why It took me this long to watch it. It's a very very good film. You can tell a lot of care and brilliant minds went into making this movie. It's the story, it's biblical and epic. All the small details. I just live this world. It could be a real place somewhere out there among the stars. I can't wait to see part 2 !

I was never going to see Dune: Part One because I had never read the book and had no idea what it was about. After a few friends convinced me to go see it in IMAX it only took a few minutes before I was hooked. Well directed, shot, acted, and especially edited. Thanks Joe! You're becoming one of my favorite editors.

Loved this interview! After seeing the Dune: Part Two trailer in theaters a couple of times now I’ve started to notice that (depending on the theater) the aspect ratio is different. Some are 2:35, others 1:90 and also full 1:43 imax. What is the standard aspect ratio for Dune 2 is it 2:35 like Dune 1 or is it now 1:90 and it just goes down or up depending on the theaters capabilities? Thanks!
@pseudonymousbeing987
@pseudonymousbeing987 6 ай бұрын
They said the entire film was filmed in IMAX this time, unlike 40% of part 1. They have not yet said if this means 1.9:1 or 1.43:1. I assume some parts will still be in 1.9, though I pray all is in 1.43:1. Either way 1.43 will be the ultimate experience, and you shouldn't be losing anything for scenes in 1.9:1 as they'll just switch to that when it comes up.
@rakvickarna
@rakvickarna 3 ай бұрын
@@pseudonymousbeing987 @MaxwellsDemonYT It was shot all IMAX. That gives you a 1.43 IMAX aspect ratio, from which was derived the 1.43 and 1.90 formats. Normally the 2.39 version is made by cropping top and bottom of the 1.43 IMAX frame, but they used an ALEXA A65 system for specific shots where they wanted a full IMAX quality but with "added sides", i.e. a full width 2.39 aspect ratio (6K). Does that make sense?
